Pseudobunocephalus timbira was formally described in 2019 by Leão, Carvalho, Reis & Wosiacki in the journal Zootaxa, based on specimens from streams of the lower Tocantins and Mearim river drainages in Maranhão, Pará and Tocantins states, Brazil. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, within the genus Pseudobunocephalus, a genus erected by Friel in 2008 to separate a group of miniature, flattened aspredinids from the older, broader genus Bunocephalus.
The species epithet timbira honours the Timbira, indigenous peoples who inhabit the lower Tocantins and Mearim river basins where the species occurs. Within the genus, P. timbira is distinguished from its relatives by a cartilaginous (rather than ossified) second hypobranchial and third basibranchial, along with the absence of serrations on the proximal portion of the pectoral-fin spine — a diagnostic character noted for the genus. The species has a disjunct distribution across two separate river systems, an unusual pattern that the describing authors highlighted as taxonomically significant.
Morphology
Pseudobunocephalus timbira is a genuinely tiny catfish, not surpassing about 1.5 in standard length in the original description — among the smallest banjo catfishes known. Like all Aspredinidae it has the family's signature body plan: a broad, dorsoventrally flattened head and forebody tapering to a slender, almost tadpole-like tail, giving the whole animal a leaf- or twig-like silhouette that serves as camouflage on the streambed.
