Taxonomy & naming
Pseudobunocephalus bifidus was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1942, like many small South American banjo catfishes of the period placed in the old, broadly defined genus Bunocephalus. It was later transferred to Pseudobunocephalus, a genus erected to separate a distinct lineage of small, flattened banjo catfishes — including a newly described species from the Orinoco system of Colombia and Venezuela — from the rest of Bunocephalus. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Pseudobunocephalus bifidus as the currently valid combination within the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes.
The genus name Pseudobunocephalus signals its close relationship to, but distinction from, Bunocephalus (from the Greek bounos, "hill/mound", and kephale, "head", describing the humped, bumpy head shape typical of the group); the prefix pseudo- flags it as a look-alike lineage rather than a true member of Bunocephalus. If older aquarium or trade literature lists this fish under Bunocephalus bifidus, that reflects the pre-split classification rather than a different species.
Morphology
Like other banjo catfishes, Pseudobunocephalus bifidus has the family's unmistakable silhouette: a flattened, broad head and shoulders tapering abruptly into a slender, almost rat-like tail, giving the fish its common "banjo" profile when viewed from above. The skin is naked — there are no scales, but the body is roughened with small tubercles and bony plating typical of aspredinids, which combines with mottled brown, grey and cream camouflage patterning to make the fish disappear against sand and leaf litter.
This is a genuinely small species: reported maximum size is about 1.5 in standard length, with related Pseudobunocephalus material from Bolivia and Brazil measured at roughly 1–2 in SL. It never approaches the 3 in or so seen in some other Pseudobunocephalus, let alone the larger Bunocephalus species — there is no size trap here, but its tiny scaleless body still means it must be handled and medicated with the same caution given to any naked-skinned catfish.
Habitat
Pseudobunocephalus bifidus is native to South America, with records spanning the Orinoco River system of Colombia and Venezuela and, per genus-wide range data, extending into parts of the Amazon and Paraguay–Paraná drainages. It is an exclusively freshwater fish.
It is found in small rivers and streams shaded by marginal vegetation, typically over sandy or silty bottoms littered with fallen leaves and fine plant detritus — the leaf litter and shade both provide cover and match its cryptic colouration. Specific water chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) was not available in the sources consulted for this profile; as a lowland, leaf-litter-associated South American stream fish it most likely encounters warm, soft, humic-stained water, but that should be treated as a general inference rather than a confirmed reading for this species.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Pseudobunocephalus bifidus specifically is sparse in the available literature. Banjo catfishes as a group are nocturnal benthic omnivores that forage over the substrate after dark, taking small invertebrates, worms and detritus rather than actively hunting in open water, and there is no reason to expect this species differs.
In the aquarium, related small Aspredinidae accept sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and other small prepared foods once settled, fed after lights-out so a shy, camouflage-dependent fish is not out-competed by more active tankmates.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been documented for Pseudobunocephalus bifidus in the sources available for this profile. In several banjo catfishes, breeding is known chiefly through female Aspredinidae that carry fertilised eggs attached to the skin of the belly on small fleshy stalks (cotylephores) until they hatch — a distinctive strategy found across parts of the family — but this has not been specifically confirmed for P. bifidus, and given its tiny adult size and the general lack of aquarium spawning reports, it should not be assumed without direct evidence.
Breeding
There are no confirmed captive-breeding reports for Pseudobunocephalus bifidus, and reproductive biology in the wild is essentially undescribed for this species. A related, larger banjo catfish commonly kept in the hobby, Bunocephalus coracoideus, reaches sexual maturity around 4.5 in and spawns nocturnally with eggs scattered and often cannibalised by the parents — but P. bifidus tops out at under half that length, so that account cannot simply be transferred across. Honest assessment: breeding of this species in the home aquarium is essentially unknown and should not be expected.
In the aquarium
Pseudobunocephalus bifidus is rarely, if ever, seen in the aquarium trade, and specific husbandry accounts for the species are not available. Its real adult size is small — around 1.5 in — so it does not need a large tank on size grounds alone, but as with any banjo catfish a soft, fine sand substrate, leaf litter, and plenty of shaded cover (bogwood, dried leaves) are essential to let it bury and camouflage as it does in the wild; a bare, brightly lit tank suits it poorly.
Like every catfish in this family it is scaleless, so it should be treated as medication-sensitive — copper-based and many general treatments should be dosed conservatively, at reduced strength, exactly as for loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned fish. It is most active at night, so daytime inactivity is normal rather than a sign of poor health. Given how little is documented about its requirements, this is a fish best suited to an experienced keeper prepared to research and observe rather than follow an established care sheet.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pseudobunocephalus bifidus as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 5 August 2020. It is not currently considered threatened.
As a small, inconspicuous, leaf-litter-dwelling fish spread across parts of the Orinoco and Amazon systems, it faces the general pressures common to South American lowland stream habitats — deforestation, sedimentation and water-quality decline — but no species-specific conservation concern has been documented. It is not a fish supported by any established aquarium trade or captive-breeding program; any specimens in the hobby are presumably wild-collected incidentally alongside other small catfishes.
