Taxonomy & naming
Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus was described by Jacques Mees in 1989. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, within the genus Pseudobunocephalus, one of several genera split out of the old, broadly defined "Bunocephalus" as the family was revised. The Catalog of Fishes treats Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus as the currently valid combination, and older literature or trade references to it as a Bunocephalus should be read as the same fish under its earlier generic placement.
The genus name Pseudobunocephalus combines the Greek pseudes ("false") with Bunocephalus, the older banjo-catfish genus name (from bounos, "mound/hill", and kephale, "head", for the knobby, humped head shape of these fish) — signalling that this genus was recognised as distinct from true Bunocephalus. The species epithet amazonicus simply means "of the Amazon", after its home basin.
Morphology
Like all banjo catfish, Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus has the family's unmistakable silhouette: a broad, flattened, disc-like head and forebody tapering abruptly into a long, slender, almost eel-like tail — the "banjo" shape. The skin is entirely scaleless and instead often bears small tubercles or rough patches, and the mottled brown-and-tan colouration, fringed by fine skin flaps along the head and body margins, gives a strong resemblance to a waterlogged dead leaf, its main defence against predators.
At a maximum reported size of only about 2 in, this is one of the smallest species in an already small-bodied family — many banjo cats sold in the hobby run 4.5–6 in, so P. amazonicus is notably diminutive even by Aspredinidae standards. As in other catfish, the bare skin means it lacks the protective mucus-over-scale barrier of scaled fish, which has direct consequences for medicating it (see "In the aquarium").
Habitat
Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus is native to South America, recorded from the upper and middle Amazon River basin. Like other small banjo catfish it is a leaf-litter and sand-bottom specialist, living in shallow, slow-flowing stretches of river and floodplain habitat where accumulated leaf litter and fine sediment give it both camouflage and cover.
Suitable aquarium water follows the general banjo-catfish range reported for the group: roughly 75–82 °F, pH 6–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (around 4–18 °N). A fine sand substrate and leaf litter are not decorative extras for this fish — they are the habitat it is built to disappear into, and without them it is exposed and stressed.
Feeding
Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus is a nocturnal, benthic micro-predator and scavenger, foraging over the substrate after dark for small invertebrates and detritus rather than actively hunting in open water. Its flattened, camouflaged body is built for ambush and concealment, not pursuit.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets and small frozen foods such as bloodworm, but because it is strictly nocturnal and easily out-competed by more active tankmates, food is best offered after the lights go out, directly near its resting spots in the leaf litter or sand.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour in Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus have not been documented in the available literature; like much of this species' biology, mating is essentially unrecorded. What is known comes from the wider Aspredinidae: in several banjo catfish, the female carries the fertilised eggs attached to the skin of her belly via short fleshy stalks (cotylephores) rather than depositing them in a nest or scattering them freely, a highly unusual mode of parental care among catfish.
Whether P. amazonicus follows this same egg-carrying strategy has not been confirmed for the species specifically, so this should be treated as a family-level pattern rather than a documented fact for this fish. Given how rarely this species turns up in the trade or in the literature, its natural courtship behaviour remains essentially unknown.
Breeding
Breeding of Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus in the aquarium is essentially undocumented, and there are no reliable home-breeding reports to draw on. This is consistent with the wider family: aside from a small number of better-studied banjo catfish, Aspredinidae breeding biology is poorly known and captive spawnings are rare.
If the belly-carrying strategy reported in other Aspredinidae females does apply here, no parental care beyond that egg-carrying phase would be expected, but this cannot be stated with confidence for this species. Anyone keeping this fish should treat breeding as an open question rather than something to plan for, and report anything observed — data on this species is genuinely sparse.
In the aquarium
Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus stays genuinely small — about 2 in maximum — so a modestly sized aquarium with a soft sand base and a generous layer of leaf litter or fine debris suits it well; it does not present the size trap that many other catfish do, but it is easily lost or outcompeted in a boisterous community and does best with calm, small tankmates or a dedicated nano/species setup. Because it is scaleless, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many general treatments — dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, and remove it before treating a tank aggressively.
It is strictly nocturnal, spending daylight hours motionless and camouflaged in leaf litter or partially buried in sand, so keepers should not expect to see much activity except after dark; feed once the lights are off. It lacks the large, dangerous locking spines of bigger catfish, but should still be handled gently in a container rather than a net, as its body flaps and skin are easily damaged. Maintain stable, clean water — banjo catfish of this size are not tolerant of poor water quality.
Conservation
Pseudobunocephalus amazonicus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation status — threatened or otherwise — has been formally assigned. This is common for small, cryptic, poorly surveyed Amazonian fish that see little targeted study or trade volume.
Its range within the upper and middle Amazon basin overlaps with broader pressures facing the region generally — deforestation, water-quality degradation and habitat disturbance — but no assessment exists to say whether the species is currently at risk. Given the lack of data, it is best treated as a species of unknown status rather than assumed safe.
