Taxonomy & naming
Tachysurus fulvidraco was described by the English naturalist and naval surgeon John Richardson in 1846. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the naked-skin or torrent catfishes of Asia and Africa, and sits within the large East Asian bagrid assemblage whose generic boundaries have been substantially revised.
The valid genus Tachysurus was re-established by Ng & Kottelat in 2007, who designated a neotype for the type species T. sinensis and confirmed Tachysurus as the senior synonym of the widely used genus names Pseudobagrus and Pelteobagrus. Before that revision the species was most commonly known as Pelteobagrus fulvidraco or Pseudobagrus fulvidraco in the scientific and aquarium literature; older references may also list it as Macrones fulvidraco or Pimelodus fulvidraco. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Tachysurus fulvidraco as the valid combination, and that name is followed here.
The epithet fulvidraco is Latin: fulvus means tawny or golden-yellow, and draco means dragon — a reference to the fish's yellowish colour and, perhaps, its fearsome spines. The common names yellow catfish and tawny dragon catfish both echo this etymology.
Morphology
Tachysurus fulvidraco is a robust catfish with a broad, depressed head, a stout cylindrical body tapering toward the tail, and three pairs of barbels: one long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs. The body colour is typically yellowish-brown to tawny-gold on the flanks, paler below, with darker mottling. Like all bagrids it is scaleless — the skin is entirely naked, a point with direct consequences for medication.
FishBase records a maximum total length of 13.5 in and a maximum weight of 300 g, though the common size in catch data is around 3 in standard length. A pronounced sexual size dimorphism is documented: males reach approximately 12 in while females typically do not exceed 5 in — an unusual pattern that is worth stating plainly because it can mislead keepers who assume the smaller females are juveniles.
The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff, serrated, locking spine at their leading edge. These are a standard bagrid feature: the spines can lock erect and are difficult to free once tangled. They can also break the skin if handled carelessly. The fish should always be moved in a container rather than with a net.
Habitat
This species is native to the major river systems of eastern China — principally the Yangtze River basin and the Yellow River basin — and occurs more widely across East Asia including Korea. It inhabits large rivers, lakes and associated still or slow-moving waters, favouring muddy and sandy riverbeds, deep pools and areas of moderate to slow flow. It is a demersal, non-migratory species that spends the day sheltering in cavities, burrows and undercut banks, emerging to forage on the bottom after dark.
Temperature data from FishBase places the species at 61–77 °F, making it a distinctly cool-water catfish. It is not a tropical fish by any standard definition, and keeping it consistently above 77 °F is likely to stress it. This is one of the most common husbandry errors with the species: in parts of its native range it encounters water temperatures in the mid-teens during winter, and it tolerates and arguably benefits from the seasonal cooling that heated aquaria rarely provide.
Feeding
Tachysurus fulvidraco is a nocturnal benthic omnivore with a strong bias toward invertebrate prey. Gut-content studies from the wild record insects — particularly caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera) and midge larvae (Chironomidae) — molluscs and occasionally small fish. Like most catfish it forages primarily after dark, sweeping the bottom with its barbels to locate food by taste and touch.
In the aquarium it will accept sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and other prepared foods. Because it is largely inactive during the day and can be outcompeted by diurnal tankmates, it is best fed after lights-out. Larger specimens will take small live or frozen fish; keepers with mixed communities should size tankmates accordingly.
Mating
The strong sexual size dimorphism makes sexing adults straightforward once the fish are mature: males reach roughly twice the length of females. In the wild, spawning occurs in spring and summer and is associated with pair formation; the male is the active partner in nest preparation and subsequent egg care.
Conditioning for spawning in the aquarium is understudied in the hobby, but in its native range the species is commercially important as a food fish and is routinely farm-bred at aquaculture facilities, where hormone induction is used to synchronise spawning. Home spawning has been reported but detailed success accounts are sparse in the English-language hobby literature.
Breeding
Tachysurus fulvidraco is a cavity or sheltered-substrate spawner: the pair select a sheltered site — a cavity, the underside of a rock, or a deep depression in a muddy riverbed — and the male guards the eggs after fertilisation. This is a male-guarding pattern typical of many bagrids and ictalurids, not open-water egg-scattering.
In commercial aquaculture in China and Korea, hormone injection (typically HCG or carp pituitary extract) is used to reliably induce spawning at scale; the species is an important aquaculture subject precisely because it is responsive to this treatment. Intentional home-aquarium breeding is not well documented in the English-language hobby and should be considered difficult without hormonal intervention. Keepers wishing to attempt it should provide the species with overwintering at lower temperatures to simulate the natural seasonal cue, then gradually warm the water in spring while offering high-quality live and frozen foods to condition the pair.
In the aquarium
The single most important point to understand before acquiring Tachysurus fulvidraco is its adult size: 13.5 in for males, up to a very heavy-bodied fish, in a tank that must also be filtered and decorated for a nocturnal bottom-dweller. A specimen tank of at least 55 US gal is appropriate for a single adult male; females are considerably smaller but still need room. The common error is buying a small juvenile and underestimating the endpoint.
Water temperature should be kept in the 61–77 °F range. This is a cool-water species and does not belong in a warm tropical community at 82 °F. Many keepers find it thrives in a lightly heated home at ambient room temperature without a heater, or with only light heating in winter. It needs soft substrate — sand or fine gravel — to probe with its barbels and rest on, and caves or pipe sections for daytime shelter. It is most active after lights-out, so schedule feeding at that time.
Because Tachysurus fulvidraco is scaleless, it is more sensitive to copper-based medications and some other treatments than scaled fish. If disease treatment is required, use half the normal dose initially and watch carefully. The locking dorsal and pectoral spines should be respected: always move this fish in a container, never in a net — a spine through a mesh and into a finger is a painful and surprisingly difficult injury to free. It is generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to eat but is a predator of small fish and invertebrates.
Conservation
Tachysurus fulvidraco is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It has a broad natural range across the major river systems of East Asia and is one of the most heavily farmed freshwater fish in China, where it is an important food species known as the huangyahu or Korean bullhead. The aquaculture industry is large and well-established, so commercial trade does not depend significantly on wild collection.
Despite this, wild populations face the pressures common to freshwater fish across eastern China: habitat degradation from river engineering, pollution, sedimentation from agricultural runoff, and the effects of introduced species. The species is still common enough that these pressures have not altered its overall conservation status, but they remain relevant to the long-term health of the river ecosystems it depends on.
