Wallago attu is a large, scaleless predatory catfish of South and Southeast Asian rivers — a member of the family Siluridae, the sheatfishes — and one of the most dramatic size-trap species in the hobby. Juveniles are commonly sold at 4–6 in and are genuinely appealing; adults reach 35.5–47 in total length and require a tank of 3,0.5 US gal or more. It is a nocturnal ambush predator that will eat any tankmate it can swallow, and it is scaleless — making it sensitive to copper and many medications. Only public aquaria or very large private facilities can house a fully grown Wallago attu responsibly.

Taxonomy & naming

Wallago attu was formally described by Marcus Elieser Bloch and Johann Gottlob Schneider in 1801. It belongs to the family Siluridae — the sheatfishes or glass catfishes of the Old World — and to the genus Wallago, a small genus of large Asian predatory catfishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Wallago attu as the valid name.

In older literature the species appears under former generic combinations including Silurus attu, reflecting the broader historical use of Silurus before the family was split into multiple genera. The genus Wallago is not to be confused with Kryptopterus (the true glass catfishes) or Ompok, which are smaller silurid relatives; Wallago species are among the largest freshwater fish in the region. The common name 'wallago' is derived directly from the genus; 'helicopter catfish' refers to the species' wide, sweeping pectoral fins.

Morphology

Wallago attu has the streamlined, elongated body typical of its family: a broad, flattened head with a very wide gape, a long tapering body, and a deeply forked tail fin. The body is naked — completely scaleless — giving it a smooth, silvery-grey to olive-brown appearance. The lateral line is complete. Two pairs of barbels are present: long, prominent maxillary barbels reaching the pectoral region, and shorter mandibular barbels below the jaw.

The dorsal fin is small and set far forward; the anal fin is very long, extending most of the length of the body. Stiff, serrated, locking spines front the pectoral fins and can be locked erect, posing a genuine injury risk to the handler. Maximum recorded total length is around 47 in (FishBase), and weights of several kilograms are common in large individuals. Aquarium specimens sold to hobbyists are typically 4–6 in juveniles that give no hint of the adult size to come.

Habitat

Wallago attu is native to the major river systems of South Asia — including the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages of India, Nepal and Bangladesh — and extends into parts of Southeast Asia. The type locality is the Ganges River system of India. It inhabits moderate to large rivers, favouring sections with rocky or gravelly substrates and reasonable water flow; it also enters flooded plains and large lakes during seasonal floods.

Water conditions across its range are warm tropical to subtropical: temperatures of 68–82 °F, a pH of approximately 6.0–7.5, and moderate hardness. This is not a blackwater fish — the rivers it inhabits are productive, often turbid, warm-temperate to tropical systems rather than soft, acidic forest streams. The species is benthopelagic in habit, spending much of the day resting near the bottom or in cover, then becoming active at dusk and through the night.

Feeding

Wallago attu is an obligate piscivore and one of the most effective ambush predators in Asian freshwater. Its enormous gape allows it to take prey fish approaching its own body diameter. In the wild it feeds on a wide range of fish, large invertebrates, frogs and other animals it can overpower, hunting primarily at night by lying in wait and striking with explosive speed.

In the aquarium it must be fed large, meaty food: whole fish or large fish fillets, prawns and shrimp, and large carnivore pellets. Live feeder fish can be offered but are not necessary. Any tankmate small enough to be swallowed will be eaten without hesitation — stocking must be limited strictly to fish that are physically too large for the Wallago's gape, and even then the catfish may harass or injure companions. It should, in practice, be kept alone or only with very large, robust fish.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in Wallago attu is not well documented from field studies. Like most large Asian silurid catfishes, it is presumed to spawn in open water over flooded substrates during seasonal flood periods, when rivers rise and spill into marginal habitats — a pattern common to large river-spawning catfishes across the region. No detailed observations of courtship or pair-bonding in the wild appear to have been published for this species, and the reproductive biology remains incompletely known.

The cache and available literature give no account of confirmed natural spawning observations, so the precise mating sequence cannot be stated with confidence. Commercial production relies on hormone induction rather than natural courtship, which means the natural mating behaviour remains an open question in practice.

Breeding

Wallago attu is not bred in home aquaria. Commercial aquaculture production of the species for food and, to a lesser extent, the ornamental trade relies on hormone-induced spawning at specialised fish farms, a technique that requires hormonal injection, trained staff and dedicated pond or tank infrastructure.

No reliable accounts of home-aquarium breeding exist. The fish's adult size alone — 35.5–47 in in a tank of 3,0.5 US gal or more — makes captive breeding impractical for hobbyists. Juveniles available in the trade are almost entirely farm-bred or wild-collected; aquarists should assume that breeding is not achievable in a domestic setting and plan accordingly.

In the aquarium

Wallago attu is strictly a specimen fish for very large installations, and the most important thing to understand before purchasing one is the adult size: 35.5–47 in total length. A juvenile of 4.5 in sold in a shop has the potential to outgrow a standard 500-litre tank within a couple of years. The absolute minimum practical tank for an adult is approximately 3,0.5 US gal, and most home aquaria are unsuitable. Purchase this species only with a firm plan for long-term housing.

The fish is completely scaleless, making it sensitive to copper-based medications, formalin and many standard treatments — dose at half the recommended rate, or use a copper-free alternative wherever possible, and watch closely for adverse reactions. The stiff, serrated, locking pectoral spines are a handling hazard: never net a Wallago attu, as the spines will tangle in the mesh and injure both fish and keeper; always move it in a rigid container.

Wallago attu is nocturnal and inactive during the day; provide substantial cover — large PVC pipe, rockwork, driftwood — for daytime shelter. Water should be maintained at 72–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, with moderate filtration to handle the heavy bioload of a large predatory fish. Diet is exclusively meaty (fish, prawn, large pellets). It must be housed alone or only with tankmates too large to be eaten — in practice, solitary housing is safest.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Wallago attu as Least Concern in 2012. The species has a wide distribution across major South Asian river systems, is found in protected areas, and tolerates some degree of habitat modification. It is not CITES-listed.

Nonetheless it faces genuine pressures across its range. It is an important food fish in India, Bangladesh and Nepal and is subject to heavy fishing pressure; habitat degradation through dam construction, river impoundment, sedimentation and water pollution affects the large river systems it depends on. The 2012 assessment acknowledged overfishing and habitat degradation as primary threats. The species is farmed commercially in South Asia, which supplements wild populations in the food trade, but most ornamental specimens reaching the hobby are either farm-produced or wild-caught juveniles.
