Periophthalmodon septemradiatus, the freshwater mudskipper, is one of the most extraordinary fish in this atlas — and one of the most misunderstood. It is a true goby, a member of the family Oxudercidae (subfamily Oxudercinae), carrying the fused pelvic sucker disc that defines the lineage, but it has pushed the amphibious life to an extreme that few other vertebrates match: it spends much of its time out of water, breathing through its damp skin and gill-chamber lining, hauling itself across warm mudflats and mangrove banks on its pectoral fins. Native to the estuaries, tidal rivers and freshwater reaches of South and Southeast Asia — from the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta east through the Mekong and its tributaries to Vietnam and Indonesia — this 4 in species inhabits both brackish and genuinely fresh intertidal muds, digging J- or U-shaped burrows in which it spawns and takes refuge. It is not a community fish; it demands a paludarium with land, warm brackish or hard fresh water, and high humidity. Gobies are overwhelmingly marine, and the mudskippers are the group's most conspicuous foray into the intertidal and estuarine world.

Taxonomy & naming

Periophthalmodon septemradiatus was first described by Francis Hamilton in 1822, under the original combination Gobius septemradiatus, from material collected in the rivers of Bengal. A second name proposed in the same work — Gobius tredecemradiatus Hamilton, 1822 — is now treated as a synonym. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, places the species in the genus Periophthalmodon, family Oxudercidae, subfamily Oxudercinae, the true mudskippers.

The Gobioidei as a whole have been substantially reorganised in recent decades: the old, catch-all family Gobiidae has been split into Gobiidae sensu stricto, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae, and the mudskippers sit in that last family. Periophthalmodon is a true goby — not a sleeper or gudgeon — and the fused pelvic fins forming a cup-shaped sucker disc are the key character; in the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) the pelvic fins remain separate. This distinction matters: the overwhelming majority of gobies are marine, and the amphibious mudskippers are among the small number of oxudercine gobies that have colonised the estuarine and freshwater intertidal.

The specific epithet septemradiatus is Latin for 'seven-rayed', referring to a ray count in the fins.

Morphology

A stout, heavy-bodied fish reaching approximately 4 in in total length, Periophthalmodon septemradiatus has the unmistakable shape of a mudskipper: large, prominent eyes set high and close together on the head and able to move independently in their sockets; a broad, muscular head; and large, stiffened pectoral fins that serve as foreleg-analogues for pulling the fish across the mud surface. The pelvic fins are fused into the sucker disc shared by all true gobies, which here assists adhesion on sloping or wet substrates.

The body is olive-brown to greenish-brown, with faint mottling, and lightens toward the belly. In breeding condition, males develop a vivid metallic deep-blue nuptial coloration used in courtship displays. The dorsal fin is divided into two parts. The eyes are truly remarkable — they can be retracted into the sockets for moistening and protection, and their elevated position gives the fish good aerial vision for spotting rivals and predators on the mud surface.

Sexual dimorphism is moderate: males tend to be larger and broader-headed, and the nuptial blue flush is the most reliable indicator in the field. Females are slightly smaller and rounder-bodied.

Habitat

The freshwater mudskipper ranges from the Indian subcontinent — the Ganges-Brahmaputra and adjacent river systems — eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, the Mekong River basin, southern Vietnam (including the Mekong Delta, the Bassac River, and the Hau River system), and into Indonesia. It is one of the few mudskipper species regularly recorded in genuinely fresh, non-tidal water as well as in brackish estuaries, occupying a wide salinity gradient from the coast inland.

Habitat is intertidal and sub-tidal mudflat with mangrove vegetation, tidal-creek banks, soft riverine banks and the margins of tidal floodplains. The substrate is soft, anaerobic mud into which the fish excavates burrows. Population studies along Vietnamese rivers confirm it in both saline estuary reaches and fresh upstream sections, with individuals active across this salinity gradient.

The species is an obligate air-breather when active on land: it keeps water in its gill chambers (used as an oxygen store) and supplements gas exchange through its richly vascularised, moist skin. It needs surface land area and high ambient humidity — not open water alone.

Feeding

Periophthalmodon septemradiatus is a micro-predator, taking small invertebrates from the mud surface and shallow water — small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and other benthic invertebrates. Its large eyes and terrestrial vision make it an active, sight-oriented hunter both in the water and on land.

In captivity it should be offered small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, small earthworms, and similar meaty invertebrate foods. It is unlikely to accept dry flake readily, and reliance on flake alone results in poor condition. Feeding partly terrestrially — presenting food on the mud or emergent surfaces of a paludarium — is natural to this species and may improve uptake. Aquarium-keeper accounts confirm that variety and live or frozen foods are the key to keeping this species in good condition.

Mating

Males of Periophthalmodon septemradiatus are territorial and burrow-owners. Courtship takes place outside the burrow, and males use conspicuous visual displays — raising the dorsal fins to full height, lateral spreading of the pectoral fins, and the vivid metallic deep-blue nuptial coloration — to advertise to females and intimidate rival males. The display is pronounced and energetic, and competing males will chase and jaw-lock along burrow boundaries.

Burrows are typically J-, U-, or W-shaped, excavated by the male using his mouth to carry mud pellets out during low tide. W-shaped burrows have multiple openings and a bulbous spawning chamber; males may maintain complex, interconnected burrow systems. The female is courted at the burrow entrance and led inside to spawn.

Breeding

Spawning takes place inside the burrow, in an air-filled chamber that the male actively maintains by surfacing, gulping air, and transporting it to the chamber in his buccal cavity. The eggs are attached to the walls of this air pocket and are guarded by the male, who tends them, fans them, and replenishes the air supply throughout incubation. Studies of Mekong Delta and Hau River populations confirm this burrow-spawning strategy across the species' salinity range — fertilised eggs have been recovered from burrows in both brackish and freshwater environments. The species breeds year-round, with peaks corresponding to favourable tidal and temperature conditions.

The larvae, once hatched, are pelagic and develop in the water column; they are not retained in fresh water for the whole cycle. Consequently, Periophthalmodon septemradiatus is rarely if ever bred in the home aquarium: the specialist setup required (intertidal mud, correct tidal cycling, suitable burrow conditions), combined with the pelagic larval stage, makes captive reproduction effectively impractical for most keepers. Aquarium specimens are wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Keeping Periophthalmodon septemradiatus correctly requires a paludarium, not a conventional aquarium. The tank must include a substantial land area of soft, fine-textured mud or wet substrate (deep enough for the fish to excavate burrows), a shallow water section, and a tightly sealed cover to maintain the high humidity these amphibious fish need to keep their skin and gill chambers moist. Heating should bring water temperature to approximately 72–81 °F; water chemistry should be hard (15–30 dH) with a pH of 7.5–8.5, and a specific gravity of approximately 1.005–1.015 (light brackish) is strongly preferred, though the species tolerates fresh water if hardness is maintained and pH is kept above 8 where possible.

This is not a community species. Mudskippers are territorial and will fight with conspecific males over burrow sites; a single specimen or a well-spaced pair in a sufficiently large, compartmentalised setup is the practical approach. Do not mix with delicate fish that require full freshwater conditions or low water levels. Feeding on the land surface mimics natural behaviour and improves feed uptake.

The primary care challenges are the specialist habitat requirements, the need for live and frozen invertebrate food, and providing enough territory for males to establish burrows. A well-set-up paludarium with warm, slightly brackish water, a deep mud bank, and a covered top is the correct environment. Wild-caught fish require a careful acclimation period and should not be stressed by excessive handling or disturbance of burrow sites.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Periophthalmodon septemradiatus as Least Concern (assessment published in the 2022.2 update). The species is described as widespread and adaptable, occupying a broad range from India through Southeast Asia to Indonesia, tolerating both fresh and brackish estuarine environments, and facing no major documented threats at the population level.

Nonetheless, the intertidal mudflat and mangrove habitats on which it depends are among the world's most pressured coastal ecosystems: mangrove clearance for shrimp aquaculture and coastal development, estuary sedimentation from inland deforestation, and water-quality degradation all erode the soft-sediment banks and tidal creeks this fish requires. Population studies in the Mekong and Bassac River systems indicate that the species remains common where suitable habitat persists, but the continuing loss of mangrove and intertidal habitat across Southeast Asia represents a long-term risk. Because wild-caught individuals are the only source for the trade — captive breeding is not practical — collection pressure, while currently low given modest aquarium demand, is worth monitoring.
