Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus armatus was described by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacepède in 1800. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes. That order also includes the swamp eels (Synbranchidae), and neither group is related to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes. The spiny-eel body form is a convergent adaptation to life in shallow, vegetated, often seasonally flooded fresh water, not a mark of phylogenetic closeness to the marine Anguilla.
The genus Mastacembelus is the largest of the spiny-eel genera and spans both tropical Africa and tropical Asia. Its African members were historically fragmented among Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus and Afromastacembelus before being synonymised back into Mastacembelus; M. armatus is an Asian species and has not been caught up in that revision. Common trade names include zig-zag eel, tire-track eel and python spiny eel, all alluding to the distinctive patterning. Its closest commonly-kept relatives in the hobby are the fire eel (M. erythrotaenia) and the white-spotted spiny eel (Macrognathus siamensis). The name Mastacembelus undulatus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Mastacembelus armatus is a large, heavily-built spiny eel, with a maximum recorded total length of approximately 35.5 in and a maximum published weight of around 500 g, though most aquarium specimens grow to 23.5–29.5 in. The body is greatly elongated and laterally compressed toward the tail, with no visible scales — like all Mastacembelidae it is functionally scaleless, the skin covered in tiny embedded scales buried beneath a thick coating of mucus. The snout terminates in the characteristic fleshy, trunk-like proboscis of the spiny eels, tipped with tubular nostrils used to probe substrates for hidden prey.
Along the dorsal midline, a series of 33–40 short, isolated spines precede the long soft dorsal fin, which runs continuously with the anal fin around the pointed tail — the arrangement giving the family its common name. The colouration is the species' most recognisable feature: a complex, net-like pattern of dark brown to blackish reticulations on a cream, tan or pale ochre background, often described as resembling a tyre track or a python's scalation. Finnage is similarly patterned. Ripe females become noticeably fuller-bodied than males; external sexing outside the breeding season is difficult.
Habitat
Mastacembelus armatus is native to the lowland fresh waters of tropical and subtropical Asia, with a range extending from India and Sri Lanka through Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and southern China (including Hainan) to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It is a fish of slow to moderately-flowing rivers, streams, wetlands, marshes, canals and coastal-plain habitats, generally over sandy or silty beds with abundant submerged vegetation or accumulated leaf litter. FishBase records it from freshwater lowland rivers, streams, wetlands and coastal areas with sandy or rocky riverbeds and vegetation.
The species is largely nocturnal and spends the day buried in the substrate — typically with only the head protruding — or wedged beneath roots, stones and debris. It favours warm water in the range of 75–82 °F and mildly acidic to neutral pH conditions (around 6.0–7.0). It is tolerant of shallow, often seasonally fluctuating habitats, and its wide distribution across the Indian subcontinent and mainland Southeast Asia suggests a reasonable capacity to cope with varied lowland water conditions, though it remains sensitive to copper and chronically poor water quality.
Feeding
Mastacembelus armatus is a carnivore, foraging nocturnally across the river bed using its sensitive, probing snout to locate prey buried in or concealed by the substrate. In the wild it takes benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and crustaceans — as well as small fishes opportunistically. Research from the Burhi Gandak river in Bihar, India confirms year-round feeding activity with dietary composition shifting seasonally with prey availability.
In the aquarium, feedings should be offered in the evening or after lights are lowered, as newly settled fish often refuse food in bright conditions or under observation. Earthworms, bloodworm, chopped prawn and similar meaty invertebrate foods are ideal, and many fish eventually accept sinking pellets once acclimatised. Because M. armatus grows large and is a determined predator, it will consume any tankmate small enough to be taken whole at night, so tankmate selection must account for its eventual adult size.
Mating
Mastacembelus armatus is a spiny eel and reproduces by scattering adhesive eggs in fresh water — it does not undertake any marine migration and is not catadromous. Wild reproductive studies from Indian rivers show that the species has two main breeding peaks annually, one running from approximately February to May and a second from July to November, coinciding broadly with periods of rainfall and seasonal temperature change. Spawning appears to be triggered by rising water, increasing temperatures and possibly shifting photoperiod as monsoonal conditions develop.
During the breeding season, ripe females become pot-bellied and more sedentary, while males are reported to be more active. A courting pair are believed to entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among fine aquatic plants, submerged roots or similar structures, in a manner consistent with other Mastacembelidae. There is no pair bond maintained after spawning and no subsequent guarding of the spawn.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Mastacembelus armatus is rarely achieved by home aquarists, though it has been documented in research settings. A study of induced breeding protocols demonstrated that successful spawning is possible under controlled conditions: soft water at approximately pH 6.5, a gradual temperature increase toward 82 °F to simulate seasonal warming, provision of flat spawning surfaces or fine vegetation, and a conditioning period on live and frozen foods. Eggs are adhesive and the pair scatters them rather than depositing them in a structured nest.
Importantly, M. armatus shows no parental care: adults may cannabilise eggs if not separated promptly after spawning, and the larvae require extremely fine-grade first foods (infusoria or equivalent) before graduating to newly-hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The difficulty of maintaining large conditioned pairs, inducing spawning naturally rather than hormonally, and rearing larvae means that virtually all specimens sold in the trade are wild-caught or raised from hormonally-induced farm spawnings rather than tank-bred by hobbyists.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus armatus is regularly sold at 4–6 in and just as regularly purchased for tanks far too small to accommodate an animal that may reach 29.5–35.5 in. Adults need a very large aquarium — a minimum of 71–78.5 in in length — with a deep bed of fine sand, abundant cave work, pipes and shaded recesses, and powerful biological filtration suited to a large, messy carnivore. The tank must be scrupulously maintained: like all Mastacembelidae the zig-zag eel is scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to the nitrite or nitrate accumulation that a less demanding fish might tolerate.
The most critical practical requirement is a tightly sealed lid. Spiny eels are celebrated escape artists: they climb airline tubing, squeeze through filter inlets, and explore any gap in the cover, dying on the floor if they get out. A fully secured lid with no gaps is non-negotiable. Seriously Fish notes that this species can also tolerate mild brackish conditions, which may benefit long-term health. It is best housed with large, robust tankmates it cannot swallow; it will eat smaller fishes at night regardless of how well it is fed. Given appropriate space and care, M. armatus is a long-lived, engaging species that becomes noticeably familiar with its keeper over time.
Conservation
Mastacembelus armatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). It is a wide-ranging species present across the major river systems of India, Sri Lanka, mainland Southeast Asia and Sumatra, and it tolerates modified, turbid and lowland-degraded waters across much of its range. It is harvested both for the aquarium trade and as a food fish across its Asian range, and is the subject of aquaculture research, which suggests that populations can be supplemented.
Despite its secure global status, the lowland rivers and wetlands it inhabits are under sustained pressure from damming, sand extraction, agricultural runoff and habitat conversion across South and Southeast Asia. Local depletion from intensive collection and habitat degradation remains a concern in some parts of its range, and the species' requirement for soft-substrate habitats with intact riparian vegetation makes it vulnerable to river engineering. Its broad distribution provides a buffer that narrower-ranged spiny eels lack, but it is not invulnerable to cumulative pressure across a large and heavily-populated region.
