Taxonomy & naming
Aspidoras mephisto was described in 2017 by Luiz Fernando Caserta Tencatt and Maria Elina Bichuette, in PLOS ONE, as 'the first troglobitic Callichthyidae from South America'. The holotype, MNRJ 48268, is a 2 in SL specimen from the Anésio–Russão cave system. It is placed in Aspidoras R. von Ihering, 1907, the small Brazilian genus of corydoradine armoured catfishes diagnosed by the divided cranial fontanel — the 'twin-windowed' skull that sets Aspidoras apart from Corydoras and its relatives.
In the major 2024 phylogenomic revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, zlae053) — the work that dismantled the overgrown old Corydoras into several genera such as Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster — Aspidoras was confirmed as a valid natural genus, and A. mephisto is listed among its species. The name is therefore stable across the hobby and the current Catalog of Fishes lineage: Aspidoras mephisto. The epithet refers to Mephistopheles, the demon of the Faust legend, an allusion both to the cave-dwelling, 'underworld' habit of the fish and to its dark-adapted loss of eyes and pigment.
Morphology
Aspidoras mephisto is a small catfish — the type series spans roughly 0.5–2 in SL — built on the standard corydoradine plan of two rows of bony plates along each flank, a helmeted head, three pairs of barbels and stiff leading spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins. What sets it apart is its troglomorphy, the suite of changes that mark a true cave fish.
Most specimens show conspicuously reduced eyes, the orbit ranging from clearly smaller than normal to strongly reduced, and every specimen examined showed a marked loss of body pigmentation — a pale, washed-out look that persists even when the fish are held in aquaria under light, confirming it is a genuine genetic adaptation rather than a temporary fading. These two features, reduced eyes and reduced pigment, are the classic signature of a troglobitic species and are what categorise A. mephisto as cave-adapted rather than merely cave-dwelling.
Habitat
Aspidoras mephisto is known only from the Anésio–Russão cave system in the upper Tocantins River basin, near Posse in the state of Goiás, central Brazil. Its entire documented range is tiny — on the order of a few square kilometres — and split between only two subpopulations within the cave system.
Inside the caves it lives in slow-moving water over silty substrate, in conditions of permanent darkness and naturally low dissolved oxygen. As a callichthyid it retains the family's facultative air-breathing, gulping air to supplement gill respiration, which is plainly an asset in the oxygen-poor, still pools of a subterranean stream. This is an extreme, specialised habitat, and the fish's pale, reduced-eyed form is a direct response to a life lived entirely without light.
Feeding
Aspidoras mephisto forages calmly over the cave floor, working close to small submerged roots and the silty bottom. It uses the tip of its snout to explore the substrate, holding the body either parallel to the bottom or angled at roughly 60 degrees as it probes, sometimes nosing beneath small roots. In a lightless cave there is no plant production, so the fish depends on organic material washed or carried in from outside — detritus, small invertebrates and the microbial film of the silt — making it a benthic detritivore and micro-predator of an energy-poor underground habitat.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of A. mephisto has not been directly observed, and cave life may modify the usual pattern. As an Aspidoras it is presumed to retain the corydoradine mode — an egg-laying species without a pair bond, in which the male takes up the 'T-position' against the female and she clasps a few eggs at a time in her pelvic fins before depositing them. In the constant darkness and food scarcity of a cave, breeding is likely to be slow and infrequent, as it tends to be in other troglobitic fishes, but the specifics for this species remain unknown.
Breeding
There is no documented breeding for Aspidoras mephisto, in the wild or in captivity, beyond the fact that some specimens have been held in aquaria for study. By analogy with the genus it is expected to be an egg-layer producing small clutches of adhesive eggs with no parental care. Cave fishes commonly show reduced fecundity and slow development as adaptations to scarce, stable underground resources, so A. mephisto may well lay few eggs and grow slowly — but these are expectations drawn from cave biology generally, not measured facts for this species, which has not been bred.
In the aquarium
Aspidoras mephisto is not an aquarium fish in any normal sense: it is a rare, range-restricted, cave-adapted species of high conservation concern, and the only specimens kept have been for scientific study. It is not in the trade and should not be collected for it. Its biology argues strongly against casual aquarium keeping — it is adapted to darkness, low oxygen and a sparse food supply, and its tiny wild population could not sustain any collection pressure. The responsible course is to leave it in its caves and support the protection of the Anésio–Russão system, not to attempt to maintain it as a novelty 'blind cory'.
Conservation
Aspidoras mephisto has not received a formal IUCN Red List category, but its describers proposed that it should be considered at least Endangered. The reasoning is stark: the species is confined to a single cave system of only a few square kilometres, holds just two small subpopulations, and enjoys no legal protection for its habitat. The caves face deforestation of the surrounding land, sewage and pollution entering the groundwater, and pressure from mining — threats that could degrade or destroy the whole of the species' range. As a microendemic troglobite with nowhere else to go, A. mephisto is among the most vulnerable of all the corydoradine catfishes, and its survival depends entirely on safeguarding the Anésio–Russão cave system.
