Taxonomy & naming
Aspidoras poecilus was described in 1976 by the Dutch ichthyologists Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker, in their revision of the plated catfish genus Aspidoras. The genus itself was erected by Rodolpho von Ihering in 1907 for small corydoradine catfishes of the family Callichthyidae, separated from Corydoras chiefly by the structure of the cranial fontanel — Aspidoras has a divided, double fontanel where Corydoras has a single one.
The genus has remained intact through the upheavals that have reshaped its larger relatives. The 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues, which split the swollen genus Corydoras into several lineages (Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster, Gastrodermus and others), recognised Aspidoras as one of those valid lineage genera in its own right. So while many 'Corydoras' of the hobby have changed names, Aspidoras poecilus keeps its combination unchanged. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists it as a valid species, Aspidoras poecilus Nijssen & Isbrücker 1976. The specific name poecilus comes from the Greek poikilos, 'variegated' or 'mottled', for the dappled body pattern.
Morphology
This is a very small catfish, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length. Like all corydoradines it is armoured rather than scaled, with two rows of overlapping bony plates running down each flank and a hard, blunt head. What separates Aspidoras from Corydoras is internal and cranial: the divided dorsal fontanel of the skull, a narrower, more elongate body, and a generally smaller adult size.
The colour pattern is the source of the name — a pale, sandy ground heavily speckled and blotched with darker brown markings that break up the outline against a sandy bottom, with mottling extending onto the fins. Three pairs of short barbels fringe the downturned mouth. As in other corys the dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff leading spines. The small size and cryptic, variegated patterning make this an easy fish to overlook in the wild and a subtle one in the aquarium.
Habitat
Aspidoras poecilus is endemic to central Brazil, recorded from the upper Xingu, Araguaia and Tocantins river basins — clear- and black-water systems draining the cerrado plateau toward the lower Amazon. It is a fish of shallow margins and small tributaries, living over sand and fine substrate among leaf litter and submerged structure, in the warm waters typical of these lowland-to-upland Brazilian drainages.
Reported temperatures for the species sit at the warm end, around 82 °F and above, consistent with its central-Brazilian range. Detailed water-chemistry measurements from the type localities are sparse in the literature, and the genus as a whole favours soft, often slightly acidic water over sandy beds in moderate current. Like other small benthic catfishes it keeps to the bottom, where its mottled livery blends into the sand.
Feeding
Aspidoras poecilus is a benthic micro-omnivore, feeding the way all corydoradines do: nosing through sand and detritus with its barbels to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and organic matter, sifting mouthfuls of substrate and expelling the cleaned grains through the gills. Its small size restricts it to correspondingly small prey. In the aquarium it accepts sinking micro-pellets, crushed dried foods, and small live or frozen items such as microworm, daphnia and finely chopped bloodworm, foraged continuously across the bottom.
Mating
Spawning behaviour in Aspidoras follows the corydoradine pattern: these are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. Courtship culminates in the characteristic 'T-position', in which a male aligns himself at right angles to the female's head while she holds a small clutch of eggs in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. The female then attaches the adhesive eggs to a cleaned surface — plant leaves, wood or glass. Specific published observations of A. poecilus spawning are limited, but congeners follow this same well-documented sequence, depositing eggs in small batches across favoured sites.
Breeding
Aspidoras species are egg-scatterers that give no parental care; the adhesive eggs are left on the chosen surfaces and the adults take no further part, and will eat eggs and fry if given the chance. Among aquarists the genus has a reputation for being a touch more demanding to spawn than the easy Corydoras, often responding to cooler, softer water and a drop in temperature that mimics seasonal rains. Clutches are modest, in keeping with the fishes' small size. Specific captive-breeding accounts for A. poecilus itself are scarce; what is known is extrapolated from better-documented relatives in the genus, where eggs hatch in a few days and the tiny fry require very small first foods such as infusoria and microworm before graduating to baby brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Aspidoras poecilus is an uncommon import, occasionally reaching specialist keepers rather than the general trade. Its care mirrors that of small Corydoras with a few refinements. It is a shoaling fish that should be kept in a group of six or more, over a soft sand substrate that lets it sift and forage without damaging its barbels — coarse or sharp gravel is harmful to all corydoradines. A modest, well-planted tank with gentle, well-oxygenated flow, clean water and regular changes suits it.
Given its central-Brazilian origin it appreciates warmth and tolerates soft, slightly acidic water. It is utterly peaceful and small, making it a fish for a quiet community of similarly small, calm species rather than for boisterous tankmates that would outcompete it at feeding time. As with all corys, take care with nets, since the fin spines tangle easily, and never let it go hungry on the assumption that it will live on scraps.
Conservation
Aspidoras poecilus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, evaluated in 2018. It has a reasonably wide distribution across the Tocantins, Araguaia and upper Xingu basins, and no species-specific threats have been identified that would place it at risk. The broad pressures on central-Brazilian freshwaters — agricultural expansion across the cerrado, deforestation, damming of the Tocantins–Araguaia system and resulting changes to flow and sediment — affect the shallow, sandy habitats it depends on, but as a species it is currently considered secure.
