Brevibora cheeya is a small, schooling rasbora of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra — a slender, silver-flanked cyprinid of tannin-stained coastal heath streams and peat-swamp drains where the substrate is sand and peat and the canopy is Melaleuca. Described from the Terengganu coast in 2011, it is distinguished from its sole congener Brevibora dorsiocellata by a complete lateral line carrying 25–30 perforated scales and a larger adult size reaching 1.5–2 in. Seldom seen in the aquarium trade, where it arrives only as an occasional bycatch in mixed Sundaland shipments, it deserves more attention than it receives: a peaceful, tightly schooling fish for the soft, acidic planted tank whose wild habitat is vanishing under the pressure of oil-palm agriculture and peatland drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Brevibora cheeya was described by Tan Heok Hui and Liao Te-Yu in 2011 and published in The Raffles Bulletin of Zoology. The species is placed in the family Danionidae. The genus Brevibora was erected to receive a small group of rasbora-like cyprinids that were previously contained within the sprawling genus Rasbora but proved to be distinct on meristic and molecular grounds; the name refers to the short lateral line that characterises some members of the genus.

The genus Brevibora currently comprises only two recognised species: B. cheeya and B. dorsiocellata, the latter the more familiar in the trade under the name eyespot rasbora. The two are most reliably separated by their lateral-line scales: B. cheeya has a complete lateral line with 25–30 perforated scales, whereas B. dorsiocellata has an incomplete or interrupted lateral line and fewer scales. Brevibora cheeya is also larger, reaching 1.5–2 in SL against the smaller adult size of its congener.

The epithet cheeya has not been publicly parsed in accessible sources; it most likely honours a locality or individual associated with the type collection from the Terengganu coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Morphology

Brevibora cheeya is a slender, fusiform cyprinid with a slightly compressed body and a terminal, modestly upturned mouth suited to feeding at or near the surface. Adults reach 1.5–2 in standard length, making it a small but not tiny fish — noticeably larger than B. dorsiocellata and broadly comparable in size to many mid-sized rasboras of the Sundaland region.

The lateral line is complete, running the full length of the flank with 25–30 perforated scales — a key character distinguishing it from its congener. General colouration follows the rasbora template of a pale silver-to-gold body with a darker mid-lateral stripe or sheen; detailed pigmentation data from the original description is not fully reproduced in accessible sources, but the fish in life appears similar to other small Sundaland rasboras of heath-stream and peat-swamp habitats.

No fixed ornamental or albino strains are known in the hobby, consistent with a species that barely reaches the trade even in its wild form.

Habitat

The type locality of Brevibora cheeya is in Terengganu state, at Rantau Abang, approximately 35 mi north of Kuala Terengganu on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The species is known more broadly from the southern half of Peninsular Malaysia — Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu and Johor — and across the Strait of Malacca in Sumatra, with records from the provinces of Jambi and Riau and from Bangka Island.

Its habitat is flowing water passing through coastal heath forests dominated by Melaleuca vegetation over a substrate of sand and peat. These are the blackwater streams and peat-swamp drains characteristic of low-lying Sundaland: the water is darkened by tannins and humic acids leaching from the peaty substrate, is strongly acidic (pH 4–7 in the wild), soft, and warm. Recorded temperatures span 68–77 °F. The Jeruju River in Sumatra is one documented key locality for the species in Sumatra.

This habitat type — lowland peat-swamp and coastal heath forest — is among the most imperilled in Southeast Asia, lost to conversion for oil-palm plantations, smallholder agriculture, peat drainage, and industrial pollution.

Feeding

Brevibora cheeya is a micropredator in the wild, taking small aquatic and terrestrial insects, worms and small crustaceans from the water surface and the upper water column. This is a typical feeding strategy for small Sundaland rasboras in heath streams, where leaf-litter invertebrates, fallen insects and zooplankton form the dietary base.

In the aquarium the species adapts readily to dried foods of appropriate size — small flakes and micro-pellets — and thrives with regular supplements of live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia and Artemia. Varied feeding maintains condition and encourages natural foraging behaviour in a well-schooled group.

Mating

Brevibora cheeya is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, as is typical for the danionid cyprinids. No parental bond forms and no nest is constructed. Spawning likely follows the pattern common to Sundaland rasboras: a ripe male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over mossy substrate, the pair pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among plant stems, moss or the substrate after scattering. Adults do not guard, fan, or tend the eggs in any way, and will readily consume both eggs and newly hatched larvae if given the opportunity. No specific courtship documentation for B. cheeya has been published in accessible literature, but its biology aligns with that pattern throughout the genus and family.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding account for Brevibora cheeya has been published in accessible sources, consistent with its rarity in the trade. By analogy with closely related Sundaland rasboras, a conditioning and spawning setup would involve very soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–6.5, low hardness, temperature 72–77 °F) with the colour of weak tea from peat filtration or dried leaf litter, and a substrate of fine Java moss or spawning mops into which the scattered adhesive eggs fall.

Parents should be removed after spawning, as they will consume eggs. Larvae are expected to hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures and become free-swimming within a further two to three days, at which point they can take infusoria or cultured rotifers before graduating to baby brine shrimp nauplii. No parental care occurs at any stage.

In the aquarium

Brevibora cheeya is rarely encountered in the hobby — most specimens in the trade arrive as bycatch mixed with other Sundaland species from Malaysian or Sumatran collectors rather than as a targeted import. When it does appear, it rewards the patient keeper with an active, tight-schooling rasbora well suited to the blackwater biotope aquarium.

The species does best in groups of eight or more, which encourage natural schooling behaviour and reduce the skittishness that small numbers produce. A well-planted tank with a dark substrate, subdued lighting and tannin-stained water (driftwood, dried leaves or peat filtration) replicates its heath-stream habitat closely. Water chemistry should be soft and distinctly acidic — pH 4.5–7.0, hardness below 100 ppm — with temperatures in the 68–77 °F range. Tankmates should be small, peaceful species that share the same water-chemistry requirements: other Sundaland rasboras, dwarf Boraras, small loaches or wild-type bettas from the same region are appropriate companions. It is not a fish for hard, alkaline community setups.

Conservation

Brevibora cheeya is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 24 December 2018). Despite that low-concern rating, the species is tightly tied to a habitat — coastal heath forest streams and peat-swamp drains of lowland Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra — that faces severe, ongoing conversion. Oil-palm agriculture and smallholder farming have driven massive peatland drainage across Sundaland; industrial pollution from the palm-oil processing and paper industries degrades the streams that remain; and the characteristic blackwater chemistry of these systems is altered irreversibly when peat is drained and the surrounding forest is cleared.

The geographic range is relatively broad for a Sundaland endemic, spanning several Malaysian states and two Indonesian provinces plus Bangka Island, which provides some resilience compared to narrowly endemic heath-stream fishes. Nevertheless, the trajectory of habitat loss across its entire range warrants continued monitoring, and future assessments may reflect the ground-level reality more starkly than the current LC designation. Wild collection for the aquarium trade appears to be incidental rather than targeted, posing minimal additional pressure on wild populations.
