Taxonomy & naming
Brevibora dorsiocellata was first described by Georg Duncker in 1904 from material collected at the Muar River, Tebing Tinggi, Johore, Malaysia — a locality in the lowland river systems of southern Peninsular Malaysia. Duncker placed it in the sprawling genus Rasbora, and it circulated in the literature and in the trade for most of the twentieth century as Rasbora dorsiocellata.
The current valid combination, Brevibora dorsiocellata (Duncker, 1904), reflects subsequent revisions that carved several small-bodied species out of the over-inclusive Rasbora and assigned them to newly erected or resurrected genera. Brevibora is a small genus of slender Sundaland rasboras, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Brevibora as the valid genus for this species. Hobbyist sources and older aquarium literature still frequently use the synonym Rasbora dorsiocellata, and both names will be encountered in trade lists and older books.
Morphology
The eyespot rasbora is a slender, laterally compressed cyprinid reaching approximately 1–1.5 in in total length, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface feeding. The body is pale and semi-translucent with a silvery sheen, and a thin dark lateral stripe runs from behind the gill cover toward the caudal peduncle. The fins are largely clear.
The species' most distinctive feature — and the source of both its scientific and common names — is a bold, round black spot ringed with gold or iridescent green at the anterior base of the dorsal fin. This ocellus is vivid and catches the light, making the fish easy to identify even in dim blackwater conditions. The epithet dorsiocellata combines the Latin dorsum (back) with ocellata (spotted or eye-marked), referring directly to this marking. Sexual dimorphism is modest: females become noticeably deeper-bellied and more rounded when gravid, while males tend to be slimmer and more intensely coloured.
Habitat
Brevibora dorsiocellata is a blackwater specialist from the peat-swamp forests of Sundaland. Its range spans southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo — countries and islands sharing the same ancient land mass of lowland tropical rainforest underlain by deep peat deposits. The type locality is the Muar River system in Johore, in the southern Malay Peninsula.
In its natural environment the species inhabits slow, tea-coloured streams and shallow pools heavily shaded by overhanging forest canopy. The water is acidic and extremely soft, stained brown with tannins and humic acids leached from accumulating peat and leaf litter, and typically warm year-round. Seriously Fish records water parameters of 68–77 °F and pH 5.0–7.5, though wild populations in undisturbed peat swamps experience the lower end of that pH range. The species lives alongside other peat-swamp specialists — Betta species, other small rasboras, and snakeheads — in one of the most chemically distinctive and biologically rich freshwater environments in Southeast Asia.
Feeding
In the wild, Brevibora dorsiocellata is a micropredator, taking small invertebrates from the water surface and column. Its diet includes small insects and their larvae, tiny crustaceans and zooplankton, consistent with the foraging style of other small Sundaland rasboras patrolling the surface and mid-water of shaded forest pools.
In the aquarium the species adapts well to small live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, baby brine shrimp and micro worms are all accepted enthusiastically and help maintain condition, colour and readiness to spawn. Quality micro-pellets or finely crushed flake can supplement the diet, but live or frozen foods should form a meaningful part of the routine for a species accustomed to catching moving prey in dim, slow-moving water.
Mating
Like other danionin and rasborine cyprinids, Brevibora dorsiocellata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind. In a well-planted, mature aquarium with a healthy group, spawning can occur continuously and largely unobserved, with eggs and milt released during brief chasing bouts among fine-leaved vegetation or moss.
Courtship follows the pattern typical of small rasboras: a male pursues a gravid female closely through the planting, pressing alongside her as eggs and sperm are released into the water column or among plant stems. The event is brief and repeated, and a single female may release eggs in multiple small batches across a spawning session. No bond forms between the pair, and both sexes will consume eggs if they encounter them.
Breeding
Brevibora dorsiocellata is a continuous egg-scatterer that, in a heavily planted, mature aquarium with stable water chemistry and regular live-food feeding, will often spawn without deliberate intervention — fry may simply appear among dense moss or fine-leaved plants. Seriously Fish notes this pattern of near-continuous, low-level spawning in well-maintained tanks.
For a more deliberate breeding attempt, a small, separate spawning tank with a deep layer of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, spawning mops) or a mesh bottom to protect eggs from the adults is recommended. Soft, acidic water matching the species' blackwater origins — pH around 5.5–6.5, low hardness, warm and stable at 73–77 °F — provides the right conditions. After a brief light session the adults should be removed, as they readily consume their own eggs. The eggs are adhesive and small; hatching occurs within a day or two, and larvae become free-swimming shortly after, taking infusoria and then baby brine shrimp. Growth is relatively slow compared to more robust rasboras, and the fry are sensitive to water quality.
In the aquarium
The eyespot rasbora is a delicate and rewarding species for the specialist keeper, but it demands conditions that mirror its blackwater origins rather than the general community tank. Soft, acidic water — pH 5.0–7.0, very low hardness — is essential; Seriously Fish records a hardness range of 18–179 ppm for captive fish, though the lower end better suits wild-type individuals. Temperature should be held in the 72–77 °F range. The species is sensitive to elevated nitrates and to sudden shifts in water chemistry, and it does poorly in hard, alkaline tap water without appropriate preparation.
A blackwater biotope setup suits it well: a dark substrate, dried leaf litter, bogwood or driftwood, dim lighting filtered through floating plants, and a dark background. The species is peaceful and should be kept in groups of six or more to allow natural shoaling behaviour; it makes a superb companion for Betta species, small Borneo loaches, and other peat-swamp fishes from the same region. Its rarity in the trade reflects the difficulty of collecting from intact peat swamps and the ongoing loss of its habitat — captive-bred stock, when available, is preferable to wild-caught fish.
Conservation
Brevibora dorsiocellata is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in December 2018. The primary drivers of decline are habitat loss and degradation across Sundaland: peat-swamp forests throughout the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo have been cleared and drained at extraordinary scale for oil palm plantations and building development, directly destroying the blackwater streams and peat pools the species depends on. Fire, drainage canals and agricultural runoff alter the chemistry of surviving watercourses, pushing them toward the neutral or alkaline conditions the species cannot tolerate.
The eyespot rasbora's dependence on intact peat-swamp forest makes it a sentinel of one of the most threatened freshwater ecosystems in the world. Deforestation in its range has been among the fastest on Earth over the past three decades, and the species' limited mobility and habitat specialisation give it little capacity to shift range or adapt to degraded conditions. Conservation of remaining peat-swamp forests — particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia — is essential for the long-term survival of this and many co-occurring peat-swamp specialists.
