Taxonomy & naming
Brevibora exilis was described in 2014 by Liao and Tan from specimens collected in the Kahayan and Sebangau river basins of Kalimantan Tengah (Central Kalimantan), Indonesian Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Brevibora exilis Liao & Tan, 2014.
The genus Brevibora was carved out of the historically broad and polyphyletic Rasbora when molecular and morphological work forced a major reorganisation of the Old World 'rasboras'. Brevibora now holds a small cluster of minute, slender cyprinids from the Sundaland region characterised by their reduced squamation and other osteological features that set them apart from the core Rasbora clade. Among the characters that distinguish B. exilis within the genus are 10 circumpeduncular scales and a noticeable blotch in the dorsal fin, alongside its exceptionally slender body depth of 19.3–24.7% of standard length.
No established common names are in wide use for this species in the hobby, though it is occasionally referenced as the eyespot rasbora or slender dwarf rasbora in aquarium trade literature.
Morphology
Brevibora exilis is among the most slender members of its genus, with a body depth measuring only 19.3–24.7% of standard length — giving it a distinctly pencil-like profile compared with the rounder-bodied dwarf rasboras of the hobby. Maximum recorded size is 1 in SL (standard length), making it an extremely small fish even by rasbora standards.
Distinctive features include 10 circumpeduncular scales and a dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin. The overall colouration is pale to silvery, as is typical for small peat-swamp rasboras, with lateral markings whose precise intensity varies with the fish's condition and the ambient light of blackwater environments. The caudal peduncle is narrow and well-defined, contributing to the species' attenuated silhouette.
Sexual dimorphism is not well-documented in the literature. As in related dwarf rasboras, females are likely deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdomen when gravid, while males are slimmer; the difference is subtle at this size.
Habitat
Brevibora exilis is a blackwater specialist, native to the peat-swamp forests of the Kahayan and Sebangau basins in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. These habitats are defined by their extremely soft, acidic, tannin-stained water — low in minerals and often with pH values well below 5 — the result of decaying plant matter leaching organic acids into slow, shallow streams and pools among the peat.
Peat-swamp forests have their own characteristic flora and fauna: the water is dark as tea, warm through the year, and nutrient-poor. Small fish like B. exilis exploit the abundant microinvertebrate life that develops in the organic debris and submerged leaf litter. Water temperatures in Kalimantan's lowland peat swamps typically run from around 73 °F to 79 °F, with little seasonal variation at this latitude.
This is a benthopelagic freshwater species — it moves through the water column and across the bottom among leaf litter and submerged vegetation, in the manner of many small Sundaland cyprinids.
Feeding
Brevibora exilis is an omnivore, as is typical for small cyprinids of peat-swamp ecosystems. In the wild it feeds on tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton and other small organisms drifting through or associated with leaf litter and the water column — supplemented with organic detritus and algal matter.
In captivity it accepts a broad range of foods without difficulty. Quality small-grade flake or micro-pellet foods form a practical staple, while live and frozen invertebrates such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms and cyclops maintain condition and encourage natural foraging behaviour. Given its tiny mouth and body, foods must be appropriately sized; large pellets will not be taken. Aquarists report it as an undemanding feeder that readily adapts to commercially available micropredator foods.
Mating
Brevibora exilis, like other cyprinids of its clade, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and neither parent invests in egg or fry care. In the wild, spawning is presumably triggered by seasonal water-level changes or rainfall events that freshen and marginally shift the chemistry of peat-swamp pools, as is the pattern for many small Southeast Asian cyprinids.
Courting males pursue gravid females through vegetation and among submerged leaf litter, pressing alongside them as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive eggs settle among plant stems, moss or the substrate, after which the adults disperse and may readily consume any eggs they encounter. There is no pair bond and no further interaction between the sexes after spawning.
Breeding
Breeding Brevibora exilis in captivity follows the general template for small Sundaland blackwater rasboras. A separate, dimly lit spawning tank set up to mimic peat-swamp conditions — very soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.5), slight tannin staining from dried leaves or peat filtrate, fine-leaved plants or Java moss as an egg-depositing substrate, and a temperature around 75–79 °F — gives the best results.
Well-conditioned pairs or small groups are introduced; spawning typically occurs in the morning. The scant, adhesive eggs are small and easily overlooked against a dark substrate. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Larvae are extremely small on hatching and require the finest of live foods — infusoria or commercial microbe preparations initially, then newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms as the fry grow. Growth is slow given the animal's ultimate tiny size. Detailed breeding accounts for this species in the hobby literature remain limited.
As with all danios and rasboras, the species gives no parental care after spawning — eggs and fry are entirely on their own once the adults have been removed from the breeding tank.
In the aquarium
Brevibora exilis suits a specialist setup rather than a general community tank. Its minute size — barely 1 in — makes it vulnerable to larger tankmates, and its blackwater chemistry requirements exclude it from tanks maintained for most popular tropical community fish. It is best kept in a dedicated peat-swamp biotope or alongside other dwarf Sundaland species of comparable size and chemistry tolerance: small Boraras, Paedocypris or other diminutive blackwater rasboras are natural companions.
Aquarists describe it as undemanding once its water parameters are met, appreciating a densely planted tank with driftwood, dried leaves (Indian almond or oak) to acidify and tannin-stain the water, and subdued lighting that mimics the canopy-shaded peat forest. A school of at least 10 individuals is recommended to produce natural shoaling behaviour and reduce individual shyness. Filtration should be gentle — strong flow is out of character with the still, slow waters of its native swamps.
Because it is rarely bred commercially, most specimens in the trade are likely wild-caught, which underscores the importance of maintaining them well and ideally attempting captive propagation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Brevibora exilis as Near Threatened (NT) in 2020. The species has a restricted range confined to the blackwater peat-swamp systems of the Kahayan and Sebangau basins in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo — a habitat type that has suffered severe and ongoing loss across Sundaland.
Peat-swamp forests on Borneo have been drained, burned and converted to oil-palm and timber plantations at a rate that has eliminated the majority of suitable habitat across much of the island over recent decades. Even within nominally protected areas such as the Sebangau National Park, surrounding land-use change alters the hydrology and water chemistry on which peat-swamp species depend. Pollution from agricultural runoff and peat fires further degrades the remaining habitat.
For a species with B. exilis's narrow geographic range and high habitat specificity, continued forest loss and peat-swamp drainage represent a credible extinction risk. Any trade collection adds pressure on populations that cannot easily expand their range into new catchments. Conservation of the remaining intact peat-swamp forests of Central Kalimantan is directly relevant to this species' survival.
