Taxonomy & naming
Chela kaladanensis was described by Lalramliana, Zirkunga and Ngaihte in 2026, with the primary description published in the Journal of Ichthyology (Springer). The species epithet kaladanensis is a toponym referring to the Kaladan River of Mizoram, northeastern India, which is the type locality. The genus Chela belongs to the family Danionidae and encompasses small, laterally compressed danionid minnows distributed across India and Southeast Asia; the genus is well established in the Catalog of Fishes framework that governs valid nomenclature for this group.
Danionidae itself has undergone substantial revision over the past two decades, with many former 'danio' and 'rasbora' genera redistributed following morphological and molecular analyses. Chela has generally retained its identity through these reshufflings, though its boundaries and species-level composition continue to be refined as new material from remote drainages is examined. The formal diagnosis of C. kaladanensis rests on a combination of meristic characters: a complete lateral line of 33–34 scales, 22–24 predorsal scales, 10–12 prepelvic scales, 16 circumpeduncular scales, 16 pre-caudal vertebrae, a fifth ceratobranchial bearing a 5-3-1 tooth arrangement, and premaxillae that are not in contact at the symphysis. These characters together distinguish it from congeners with which it might otherwise be confused.
Morphology
Chela kaladanensis is a small, slender, laterally compressed cyprinid with the elongate body form typical of the genus — a body plan suited to mid-water and near-surface schooling in flowing or still clear water. Habitat

Its upper reaches and tributaries in Mizoram run through forested hill terrain, producing soft, slightly acidic water low in dissolved minerals — conditions typical of Mizoram hill streams fed by monsoon rainfall on Precambrian crystalline rocks and lateritic soils.
The Kaladan drainage falls within the Chin Hills–Arakan ichthyofaunal province, a region of high fish diversity and notable endemism. Ichthyofaunal surveys of the Kaladan system have recorded between 323 and 490 fish species, with 28–40 endemics — a figure that underlines the biogeographic significance of this drainage and why a new Chela from it is ecologically plausible. Feeding

The upturned-to-terminal mouth of Chela species is well suited to intercepting insects falling onto the surface film, a common feeding strategy among small schooling danionids of clear hill streams.
In an aquarium context, Chela species and their close relatives accept standard small foods readily: good-quality flakes and micro-pellets as a staple, with live or frozen daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii and small bloodworm to maintain condition. Frequent small feedings better match the continuous, opportunistic feeding style of surface-schooling danionids than infrequent large meals.
Mating
No specific spawning observations for Chela kaladanensis have been published. The genus Chela, in common with the great majority of danionid minnows, reproduces by egg-scattering: a ripe female is pursued persistently by one or more males through vegetation or open water, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, close contact. By analogy with other Chela species and with danionid minnows generally, captive spawning would most likely be achieved in a dedicated spawning vessel with clean, soft and slightly acidic water, gentle filtration, and a layer of fine-leaved plants or a mesh grid to protect scattered eggs from being consumed by the adults.
A modest rise in temperature and the addition of fresh water to simulate monsoon conditions could help trigger spawning. Eggs should be expected to hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days thereafter and taking infusoria, micro-worms or freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as first foods. As with all egg-scattering danionids, there is no parental care after the spawning act is complete, and adults should be removed to prevent egg predation.
In the aquarium
Chela kaladanensis is not currently available in the aquarium hobby; it was described only in 2026 from a remote river system in northeastern India and has not been collected for the trade. However, its congeners — notably Chela cachius, Chela laubuca and related species — are occasionally kept and provide a reasonable guide to what this species might require. Chela minnows are active, near-surface schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six, in a well-planted aquarium with some open water at the top and a tightly fitting lid, as they are capable jumpers.
Water conditions matching the Kaladan drainage — soft, slightly acidic, clean and well-oxygenated, at temperatures between approximately 68 °F and 79 °F — would be appropriate starting parameters. These are quiet fish that suit a peaceful community of similarly sized species; they can be outcompeted for food by boisterous tankmates. Should wild-caught or F1 specimens become available, the aquarium-keeping community would benefit from documented observations of behaviour, spawning and coloration that are not yet in the published record.
Conservation
Chela kaladanensis was described in 2026 and has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its current status is Not Evaluated (NE). As a species apparently endemic to the Kaladan River drainage of Mizoram, with a type locality in a single river system, it qualifies as a narrow-range endemic — a category that frequently carries elevated extinction risk once populations are studied more fully.
The Kaladan River and its tributaries in Mizoram face pressures typical of rivers in rapidly developing parts of northeastern India: forest clearance in the catchment, agricultural intensification, sand and gravel extraction, and potential future hydroelectric development. The broader Kaladan basin supports exceptional fish diversity and a high rate of endemism, which makes the conservation of intact riparian forest and natural flow regimes in this drainage a matter of regional biogeographic significance. Until a formal IUCN assessment is conducted, the precautionary principle would suggest treating any collecting of this species, were it to enter the trade, with caution.
