Chela cachius is a small, deep-bodied cyprinid of the rivers, ponds and flooded lowlands of the Indian subcontinent — a wide-ranging shoaler that turns up in everything from fast-running streams to weedy irrigation ditches and oxbow lakes across the Ganges and Brahmaputra systems. Its compressed, almost diamond-shaped body and strongly upturned mouth mark it as a surface-living fish, quick to dart after insects falling to the water. Despite a distribution that spans Pakistan east through India and Bangladesh to Myanmar, it remains lightly documented in the aquarium hobby and essentially unrecorded in captive breeding — a gap that perhaps reflects how easy it is to overlook amid the more brightly coloured danios and rasboras with which it often shares shelf space.

Taxonomy & naming

Chela cachius was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 from specimens collected in the Ganges delta, originally as Cyprinus cachius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Chela cachius (Hamilton, 1822), with the parenthetical authority denoting the subsequent generic transfer.

The genus Chela (Hamilton, 1822) has had a complicated history. Günther erected the synonym Cachius in 1868, and some older literature treats the species under that name; both GBIF records and Catalog of Fishes confirm that Cachius is now subsumed into Chela. Chela belongs to the danionine lineage — the broad grouping of small cyprinids that includes Danio, Devario and their relatives — though it occupies an outlying position characterised by a deeper body, a strongly keeled chest and a more pronounced ventral curvature than the typical slender danio form.

Morphology

Chela cachius reaches a reported maximum of 4 in total length, though most individuals encountered in the wild and in the aquarium are considerably smaller, typically in the 1.5–2 in standard-length range. The body is notably deep and laterally compressed, giving the fish the kite- or hatchet-shaped silhouette that has earned it the common name 'silver hatchet barb.' The ventral profile curves more strongly than the dorsal, and the chest is keeled — features associated with surface-oriented, fast-water living.

The mouth is small and strongly upturned, reflecting a predominantly surface-feeding habit. The colouring is silver overall, with a greenish or golden sheen along the back and a faint lateral stripe in some lights. The fins are largely transparent or lightly pigmented. Sexes are similar in colour; females are reportedly fuller-bodied when ripe, though detailed descriptions of sexual dimorphism in the wild are limited.

Habitat

The species is native to the major river systems of the Indian subcontinent, primarily the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages, with confirmed records across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. It is a fish of the lowland freshwater zone, recorded from rivers, streams, ponds, oxbow lakes, canals, ditches, beels and agricultural tanks — a broadly tolerant habitat generalist that copes with the wide seasonal variation of monsoon-driven floodplain environments.

Water conditions across its range span soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to mildly alkaline — FishBase data indicate a pH tolerance of around 6.0–8.0 and water temperatures roughly 64–79 °F, consistent with the subtropical to tropical plains climate of the Gangetic lowlands. The species has also been documented in brackish-edge situations, and it has attracted attention as a potential larvicidal fish in rice paddies and standing water bodies on account of its surface-feeding behaviour.

Feeding

Chela cachius is an opportunistic surface and water-column feeder. Its upturned mouth and compressed, forward-leaning body are classic adaptations for intercepting small invertebrates at the air-water interface — fallen or hatching insects, small crustaceans, aquatic larvae and similar prey. In flooded agricultural settings it also takes advantage of abundant plankton and organic particles.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods without difficulty. Small live and frozen items such as daphnia, artemia nauplii and bloodworm provoke strong feeding responses and help maintain colour and condition. Finely crushed flakes and micro-pellets directed toward the upper water column are also taken readily. Its surface-oriented habit means it can be outcompeted for mid-column and bottom-sinking foods by more aggressive or faster species, so tank positioning and food type should be matched to its natural feeding zone.

Mating

Like other danionine cyprinids, Chela cachius is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No detailed observations of courtship or spawning behaviour have been published from wild populations, and the species remains unrecorded in captive breeding. By analogy with close relatives and the broader danio-family pattern, a ripe male would be expected to pursue a gravid female closely through vegetation or over a substrate, with eggs and milt released simultaneously in brief lateral presses.

There is no pair bond, no territory, and no nest construction. Eggs are scattered freely — likely adhesive or weakly adhesive and falling among plants or onto the substrate — after which the adults play no further role. Seasonally, spawning in the wild is probably linked to the onset of the monsoon, when warming, rising and refreshing waters signal breeding condition across the Gangetic floodplain.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Chela cachius has not been documented in the aquarium literature, and Seriously Fish notes this explicitly. The species has not been bred in captivity to any known record, which makes it unusual among the danionine cyprinids, many of which spawn readily under standard conditions.

In the absence of a captive record, the inferred approach — based on the species' family placement and ecology — would parallel standard danio protocol: a separate, shallow breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom to protect eggs from the adults, conditioning on live foods, and a modest temperature rise with a partial water change to simulate monsoon onset. Eggs would be expected to be small and scattered, hatching in two to three days at warm temperatures, with fry requiring fine first foods. Whether the species proves as straightforward as the zebra danio remains to be demonstrated.

In the aquarium

Chela cachius is an active, surface-oriented shoaling fish that does best in groups of eight or more individuals, which keep the school cohesive and distribute the constant low-level chasing that characterises these quick-moving cyprinids. It is a noted jumper and must be kept in a tightly covered aquarium. Tankmates should be active and similarly sized — it is not well suited to slow-moving or long-finned companions at the surface.

A longer tank with open surface swimming space, some planted edges and a gentle current reflects its river and floodplain origins. Water parameters need not be extreme: pH 6.0–8.0 and 64–79 °F cover the natural range, with soft to moderately hard water (roughly 36–215 ppm) accommodating the wide variation seen across its native drainages. It is unfussy about food but benefits from varied small live and frozen items alongside a good quality flake. Despite its wide natural distribution and apparent hardiness, the species is infrequently encountered in the trade and its captive biology remains largely undocumented — it represents a genuine gap waiting for attentive keepers.

Conservation

Chela cachius is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated March 2010. It is a wide-ranging, habitat-tolerant species with a large distribution across the Ganges and Brahmaputra systems, encompassing Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar — one of the most heavily populated and intensively farmed river basins on Earth.

Its broad habitat tolerance, from clean rivers to agricultural ditches and oxbow lakes, gives it a resilience that many more specialist South Asian cyprinids lack. The principal pressures on Gangetic freshwater fishes — pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial discharge, wetland modification, siltation and overfishing of prey invertebrates — apply to this species but have not, to date, been found to be driving population declines at a scale warranting a threat category. Its use as a larvicidal fish in standing water bodies also implies some degree of intentional or incidental maintenance of populations across its range.
