Laubuka parafasciata is a small, slender cyprinid described in 2017 from the Sala River in Mizoram, northeastern India, draining into the Kaladan basin. It belongs to Laubuka, a genus of elongate, laterally compressed danionins that range across South and Southeast Asia, typically inhabiting clear, flowing freshwaters. The species is distinguished from its congeners by a higher precaudal vertebral count of 16 and by premaxillae that do not meet at the symphysis — subtle but consistent skeletal characters that separate it from the otherwise similar Laubuka fasciata and relatives. As a newly described species known from a single river basin in the Indo-Myanmar transition zone, it remains poorly studied and is not yet evaluated by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Laubuka parafasciata was described by Lalramliana, Denis Vanlalhlimpuia and Mahender Singh in 2017 in Zootaxa 4244(2):269–276, based on specimens collected from the Sala River in Mizoram, northeastern India — a tributary of the Kaladan drainage system, which flows from the Indian state into Myanmar and out to the Bay of Bengal. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Laubuka parafasciata Lalramliana, Vanlalhlimpuia & Singh, 2017.

The genus Laubuka was established for a group of elongate cyprinids that had previously been placed in Chela or in Laubuca, and the spelling has a history of variant forms in the older literature. The genus spans South and Southeast Asia and encompasses species with a distinctive leaping, surface-oriented behaviour. The species epithet parafasciata — from the Latin para- (beside, resembling) and fasciata (banded) — alludes to the species' resemblance to Laubuka fasciata, the banded form, from which it is nevertheless diagnosably distinct on osteological grounds.

Two key diagnostic characters separate L. parafasciata from congeners: 16 precaudal vertebrae (versus 14 in the closely allied forms) and premaxillae that are not in contact at the symphysis (versus in contact in relatives). These internal characters, together with the broad dark-brown midlateral stripe visible in fresh specimens, define the species.

Morphology

Laubuka parafasciata is a small, elongate, laterally compressed danionin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like other Laubuka, it has a streamlined body with an upturned or terminal mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding, and it carries the slender, almost knife-edged lateral profile characteristic of the genus.

The most conspicuous external marking is a broad, dark-brown midlateral stripe running along the flank from behind the gill cover toward the caudal fin — a pattern that gives the species its name by echoing the banding of L. fasciata. The general body is otherwise pale or silvery, as is typical of stream-dwelling danionins that may flash in open water.

Internally, the diagnostic precaudal vertebral count of 16 — higher than the 14 found in close relatives — and the non-contiguous premaxillae at the symphysis are the defining osteological features. At 2 in SL, L. parafasciata sits at the smaller end of the genus, comparable in size to several other South Asian Laubuka.

Habitat

The type locality of Laubuka parafasciata is the Sala River in Mizoram, northeastern India, within the Kaladan River drainage. The Kaladan is a trans-boundary system that originates in the hill ranges of Mizoram and flows southwest through Myanmar (Rakhine State) to empty into the Bay of Bengal. The rivers of this drainage cut through heavily forested, hilly terrain in the Indo-Myanmar transition zone, one of the world's recognised biodiversity hotspots.

FishBase records the species as benthopelagic in freshwater, associated with flowing water. Streams of the Mizoram hill zone are typically clear and well-oxygenated, with rocky or sandy substrates, moderate gradients, and water chemistry reflecting the surrounding forest catchments — generally soft to moderately hard, with slightly acidic to neutral pH.

The broader Laubuka genus spans a range from India through Myanmar, Thailand and into Indochina, and most members occupy similar flowing freshwater habitats: hill streams, minor rivers and their associated pools rather than the large lowland plains rivers. L. parafasciata appears to be restricted to the Kaladan system in India, making it a range-restricted endemic of the northeastern hill country.

Feeding

No specific dietary study has been published for Laubuka parafasciata. The feeding ecology of the species is inferred from its morphology and from what is known of the genus more broadly. The upturned mouth and mid-water, surface-oriented posture characteristic of Laubuka are consistent with a surface and water-column feeder, targeting small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, surface-drifting insects, small crustaceans and other invertebrates — along with fine organic matter.

In the aquarium, related Laubuka and Chela species accept small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, as well as small crushed flake or micropellets. Their quick, darting movements and preference for the upper water column should be accommodated with food presented at or near the surface.

Mating

No published spawning observations exist for Laubuka parafasciata in the wild or in captivity. As a member of the danionin cyprinids, it is almost certainly an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of all other danios and their relatives. There is no nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care — adult fish scatter eggs among vegetation, over substrate or into the current and take no interest in their eggs or offspring thereafter.

In seasonally variable habitats such as the Mizoram hill streams, breeding is likely tied to the monsoon, when water temperatures rise, flow increases, and shallow, flooded, vegetated margins become available — the same cues that trigger spawning in the closely related and better-studied Danio and Devario species of the region.

Breeding

Laubuka parafasciata has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and no captive breeding accounts have appeared in the scientific or hobby literature. Based on the biology of the genus and of danionin cyprinids generally, the species is expected to scatter adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved vegetation, moss or gravel substrate, with no subsequent parental involvement.

Hobbyists attempting to breed this or related Laubuka species would follow the standard danio approach: a separate, shallow, well-planted or moss-bottomed tank, a conditioning period on live and frozen foods, and a slight rise in temperature to simulate monsoon onset. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eggs would be expected to hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days after that and accepting infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Laubuka parafasciata is not an established aquarium species and is extremely unlikely to be encountered in the hobby. It was described only in 2017 from a remote river system in northeastern India and has not entered commercial collection or trade to any documented degree. Its maintenance requirements, temperament and long-term behaviour in captivity are therefore essentially unknown.

By analogy with related Laubuka species that occasionally appear in specialist collections — such as L. laubuca and L. fasciata — it would be expected to be an active, schooling surface fish that does best in a longer aquarium with open swimming space and a tight-fitting lid (the genus is a confirmed leaper). Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water matching its hill-stream origin would be appropriate, along with good oxygenation and gentle current. As a range-restricted wild species from a biodiversity-sensitive region, any specimens in trade should be confirmed as legally and sustainably sourced.

Conservation

Laubuka parafasciata has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species was only formally described in 2017, and no population assessments or range surveys beyond the original type-locality collection have been published.

The Kaladan River system in Mizoram lies within the Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot, a region under mounting pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, shifting cultivation, infrastructure development and associated siltation of hill streams. Many fish species endemic to this transition zone are believed to have restricted ranges and small total populations, making them inherently vulnerable to habitat change even where data are lacking.

Until systematic surveys of the Kaladan drainage quantify the range and abundance of L. parafasciata, its conservation status remains uncertain. Its apparent endemism to a single river basin in a hotspot region warrants monitoring, and formal IUCN evaluation would be a useful first step toward understanding any threat status.
