Taxonomy & naming
Danio jaintianensis was described by Sen in 2007, with the type locality recorded at Tre Rangriang (also written Rangriang), near Jowai in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India. The parenthetical authority — (Sen, 2007) — marks the species' original placement and subsequent re-evaluation within cyprinid classification.
The genus Danio has been subject to ongoing restructuring since at least Kottelat and Witte (1999). A later revision by Kottelat (2013) proposed placing several shorter-bodied species, including this one, in a resurrected genus Brachydanio, under which combination the name Brachydanio jaintianensis has appeared in some literature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names followed here, retains the species within a broadly defined Danio; hobbyist sources such as Seriously Fish have also listed it under that older combination. Researchers consulting the taxonomic literature should be aware that both names circulate.
Among the true danios in the broad sense, D. jaintianensis is distinguished by its montane Brahmaputra drainage origin and its cool-water, fast-current ecology — characters that separate it ecologically from the lowland paddy-field danios of the Gangetic plains.
Morphology
Danio jaintianensis is a slender, elongate cyprinid with adults reaching approximately 1.5–2 in in standard length — broadly comparable to the zebra danio, D. rerio. The body plan is typical of the active, mid-water danios: a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and near-surface feeding, a streamlined profile, and a forked caudal fin.
Detailed external colour descriptions remain sparse in the published literature. As with other members of the group, the sexes likely show modest dimorphism, with females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded when ripe with eggs, while males tend toward a slimmer, more torpedo-shaped profile. Specific stripe or spot pattern information is not well documented in the accessible sources for this species.
Habitat
Danio jaintianensis is known from fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams within the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, north-eastern India, at elevations approaching 1,234 metres above sea level. The type locality at Tre Rangriang, Jowai (approximately 25°26'N 92°11'E) typifies this habitat: clear, turbulent water near waterfalls and mossy rocky substrates within the Brahmaputra river system. A second locality, the Thlu Muwi area near Muwi stream, has also been recorded.
The water chemistry at these sites is moderately soft to moderately hard — sources document a hardness range of roughly 18 to 143 ppm — and slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH of approximately 6.0 to 7.0. Temperatures are notably cool for a tropical fish, with naturally recorded values ranging from near 32 °F in the coldest months to no more than 73 °F in the warmest — the fish reportedly struggles above 77 °F. This cool, fast, clean-water ecology reflects the species' montane position rather than the warmer lowland streams occupied by most of its relatives.
Feeding
Danio jaintianensis is an insectivore in the wild, as is typical of active danios inhabiting clean, fast hill streams where aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates are the dominant prey. The fast current and rocky, mossy substrate of its home streams harbour a diverse macroinvertebrate fauna — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates — that the shoaling fish exploit opportunistically at mid-depth and near the surface.
In aquarium conditions, the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp are all appropriate. High-quality small dried foods can be offered as a supplement, though the species benefits from a diet weighted toward meaty items to reflect its wild feeding ecology.
Mating
Like all members of the true danio group, Danio jaintianensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No parental bond is formed and no nest is constructed. Spawning is thought to be triggered by the seasonal dynamics of its highland streams — temperature fluctuations, changes in water flow and clarity as the Meghalaya monsoon cycle progresses — rather than the flooding cues that drive lowland danios.
In courtship the male pursues a gravid female actively through the water column and among any available cover, pressing alongside her during the brief spawning act. Eggs and milt are released together, with the adhesive eggs falling among plant roots, moss, or into crevices in the rocky substrate. Adults give no care to eggs or developing larvae and will consume them given the opportunity.
Breeding
Breeding Danio jaintianensis in captivity is rarely documented, in part because the species is extremely uncommon in the hobby trade. Where attempts have been made, the approach mirrors that used for other egg-scattering danios: a cool, clean, well-oxygenated spawning tank with a mesh or layer of fine-leaved plants to protect eggs from the adults, a well-conditioned pair or small group, and water parameters matching the cool, moderately soft, slightly acidic conditions of the wild habitat.
The spawning act is brief, with eggs scattered among the substrate. Adults should be removed promptly after spawning to prevent predation on eggs. Larvae are expected to be tiny and initially require fine live foods such as infusoria or commercially available micro-foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Maintaining temperatures below 75 °F throughout is important for the health of both adults and developing fry.
In the aquarium
Danio jaintianensis is exceptionally rare in the aquarium trade and, when available, represents a specialist's fish rather than a community staple. Its most important requirement is cool, clean water: temperatures above 77 °F are reportedly stressful and likely fatal over time, which rules out standard tropical aquarium conditions and makes it unsuitable for sharing a tank with warm-water species. A dedicated species tank or a community of cool-water hill-stream fishes — gobies, loaches or other montane cyprinids with matching requirements — is strongly preferable.
The tank should provide robust filtration and strong oxygenation to replicate the fast, well-aerated streams of the Jaintia Hills. Some current, smooth rocks, and fine-leaved plants or mosses complete a naturalistic setup. As a shoaling species, it should be kept in a group of at least six individuals. Its rarity means sourcing is difficult; most specimens likely originate from wild catches rather than captive breeding, which adds weight to purchasing responsibly and supporting conservation efforts for the species.
Conservation
Danio jaintianensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 22 January 2010. The basis for this status is its extremely restricted range: the species is endemic to the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India, known from only a small number of localities within a single sub-basin of the Brahmaputra drainage. Such limited range makes any localised threat potentially catastrophic for the species as a whole.
The Jaintia Hills have faced significant pressure from coal mining — the region was historically one of India's largest coal-producing areas — along with deforestation, agricultural runoff and associated water quality degradation. These pressures affect the clear, fast, cool streams that this fish requires. The species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not considered a primary threat, but any wild harvest of so restricted a fish merits scrutiny. Formal surveys of remaining populations and stronger protection of its stream habitats are the conservation priorities most relevant to this species.
