Rasbora kobonensis is a mid-sized rasbora from the hill streams of Assam, first described by Chaudhuri in 1913 from the Brahmaputra drainage near Kobo in the Abor Hills. Reaching nearly 6 in in total length — large for the genus — it is an understudied fish of the northeastern Indian highlands, known from fast-flowing, clear hill-stream habitats that differ sharply from the soft blackwaters associated with many of its smaller Southeast Asian relatives. It remains unevaluated by the IUCN and largely absent from the hobby literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora kobonensis was described by B. L. Chaudhuri in 1913 from specimens collected at Kobo, in the Abor Hills of Assam, within the Brahmaputra River drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) retains the species in the genus Rasbora under that original combination. No subsequent revision has moved it to another genus.

The genus Rasbora has undergone substantial taxonomic revision over the past two decades. Several genera previously synonymised with or lumped into Rasbora — including Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides — have been resurrected or erected as distinct genera (Kottelat & Witte 1999 and subsequent work). Rasbora kobonensis has not been implicated in any of these splits and remains a valid Rasbora in the strict sense. No synonyms are recorded for the species. Data on this species in the primary literature are sparse beyond the original description and FishBase aggregation.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 6 in for Rasbora kobonensis, making it considerably larger than the majority of aquarium rasboras and among the larger members of the genus. Like other Rasbora it is a slender, fusiform cyprinid with a slightly pointed snout and a subterminal to terminal mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.

Detailed meristic and coloration data are not available in the secondary literature reviewed for this article. Hill-stream rasboras from the Brahmaputra drainage tend toward silvery or straw-coloured flanks, sometimes with a lateral stripe or mid-body spot, and the benthopelagic habit noted by FishBase is consistent with a fish that moves between mid-water and near-bottom positions in current-swept streams. Further morphological description awaits a modern revisionary study of the species.

Habitat

The type locality is the Brahmaputra River system at Kobo in the Abor Hills of Assam, northeastern India — a region of steep, fast-flowing hill streams fed by Himalayan foothills rainfall. FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical hill-stream habitats. This places R. kobonensis in a very different environment from the Sundaland peat swamps or slow lowland rivers associated with many smaller rasboras: the Abor Hills streams are typically clear, well-oxygenated and fast-flowing, with rocky or gravelly substrates.

Water chemistry data specific to this species are not available in the sources consulted. Hill streams of this region are generally moderately soft to moderately hard depending on substrate geology, with pH close to neutral. Water temperatures in the Assam highlands vary seasonally, tending to be cooler than lowland tropical waters. The species' confirmed native range appears to be restricted to this drainage region; no records from other river systems are noted.

Feeding

No diet studies specific to Rasbora kobonensis are available in the literature consulted. As a benthopelagic rasbora from hill streams, it likely feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and drifting terrestrial insects — supplemented by algae and organic matter. The benthopelagic classification suggests it forages at varying water-column depths rather than being strictly a surface or bottom feeder.

In any aquarium setting a varied diet of good quality flake or pellet food, supplemented regularly with live or frozen invertebrate foods such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, would be appropriate given its size and the invertebrate richness typical of the fast hill-stream environment it inhabits.

Mating

No spawning observations for Rasbora kobonensis have been published. As a member of the genus Rasbora it is almost certainly an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the typical cyprinid manner. Courtship in rasboras generally involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released together in a brief spawning act, after which both fish move away.

There is no pair bond, no territory defence, and no nest construction associated with Rasbora spawning. Adults routinely consume their own eggs if opportunity allows. The comparatively large size of this species suggests spawning behaviour more akin to larger mid-water stream rasboras than to the diminutive plant-depositing species of the genus.

Breeding

Rasbora kobonensis has not been reported in captive breeding accounts in the hobby or scientific literature reviewed. Given its standard Rasbora reproductive mode, breeding would follow the general egg-scattering pattern: well-conditioned adults introduced to a tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, with scattered adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs falling to the substrate or among plant material where the adults give no further attention to them.

The absence of any documented aquarium breeding — and the species' apparent rarity in the hobby — means that specific guidance on triggers, egg counts, incubation times and fry development cannot be given without fabricating data. A cool, oxygen-rich water flow would suit its hill-stream origins. Egg and fry care would parallel that of other large-bodied rasboras: remove adults after spawning; raise fry on infusoria progressing to small nauplii.

In the aquarium

Rasbora kobonensis is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the hobby trade. Its large maximum size — approaching 6 in — means it would require a spacious aquarium of at least 39.5–47 in in length. As a hill-stream species it would benefit from good water movement and high dissolved oxygen, a temperature range somewhat cooler than typical tropical species, and a pH close to neutral with moderate hardness consistent with its Brahmaputra hill-stream origins.

In the absence of specific husbandry records, keepers working with this species would be advised to treat it as a shoaling rasbora and provide it with conspecific company, ample open water for swimming, and a varied diet of quality prepared and live or frozen foods. Its rarity in the trade means it would be a species for the specialist collector rather than the general community aquarium.

Conservation

Rasbora kobonensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. FishBase records its conservation status as Not Evaluated. Its restricted known range — apparently confined to the Brahmaputra hill-stream system around the Abor Hills of Assam — and the limited published data on the species mean that its true population status and trends are unknown.

The hill streams of northeastern India face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural encroachment, siltation and the modification of upland catchments across the region. For a species with a narrow known range and very sparse documentation, formal assessment would be valuable. Its large body size and hill-stream specialisation may make it sensitive to habitat degradation that affects flow regime, water clarity and substrate quality. Collection pressure for the trade is not known to be significant given its near-absence from the aquarium market.
