Botia birdi is a small, cool-water botiid loach from the hill streams of Assam in northeastern India, described by B. L. Chaudhuri in 1909. Rarely encountered in the hobby compared to its botiid relatives, it is nonetheless every inch a true loach: it carries the erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin of the family, demands a sociable group of five or more to thrive, and inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water that is cooler than most tropical community tanks can offer. Reaching around 2–3 in in standard length, it is a compact fish suited to smaller, well-aerated mountain-stream setups, and the keeper who supplies it with cool, clean, flowing water and a proper shoal will be rewarded by a crepuscular, characterful group.

Taxonomy & naming

Botia birdi was described by the Indian ichthyologist B. L. Chaudhuri in 1909 from specimens collected in Assam, northeastern India. The type locality is placed in the hill streams of Assam, at the foot of the eastern Himalayas. Chaudhuri erected the name within the genus Botia, which at the time served as a broad receptacle for the botiid loaches of South and Southeast Asia, and that placement has remained unchanged — no subsequent revision has moved this species to a different genus.

Botia belongs to the family Botiidae, the botiid or horse-face loaches, a family that also encompasses Yasuhikotakia, Syncrossus, Sinibotia and the monotypic Chromobotia. The genus Botia sensu stricto, as currently treated by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), contains the South Asian botiids centred on India, including the well-known yoyo loach (Botia almorhae) and the zebra loach (Botia striata). Within this assembly, Botia birdi is one of the less-studied members, and it remains poorly documented in both the scientific and the aquarium literature.

The specific epithet birdi was coined by Chaudhuri; the name is almost certainly an eponym (a personal name), though the identity of the person honoured has not been traced in accessible sources.

Morphology

Botia birdi is a small, laterally compressed loach reaching approximately 2–3 in in standard length, placing it among the smaller members of the genus — considerably more compact than the dojo loach or clown loach, and broadly comparable in size to the zebra loach or smaller Yasuhikotakia species. The body profile is arched, with a pointed snout, a subterminal mouth adapted for picking food from the substrate, and four pairs of barbels that assist in locating invertebrate prey.

Like all botiids, Botia birdi carries a sharp, erectile spine nestled in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine. This is a defensive structure that the fish can flick outward when threatened or handled; it will readily snag a net and can cut a careless hand, so the fish is best transferred in a container rather than a mesh net. The body is effectively near-scaleless — scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin smooth to the touch — a point with direct relevance to disease treatment, as the fish absorbs medications through the skin far more readily than a scaled species.

Coloration details for Botia birdi are sparse in accessible sources. The specific epithet "twospotted loach," used in some hobby contexts, suggests a distinctive spot pattern, but precise pigmentation descriptions await access to the original Chaudhuri description or a fresh survey specimen.

Habitat

Botia birdi is native to the hill streams of Assam in northeastern India, a region of fast-flowing, highly oxygenated rivers and tributaries draining the southern slopes of the eastern Himalayas. The water here is cool — typically in the range of 64–75 °F — soft to moderately hard, and clean, carrying a good current over gravel, cobble and sand substrates with minimal silt. This is a fundamentally different environment from the warm, tannin-stained rivers of Sundaland that the clown loach calls home.

The cool, fast, hill-stream character of its habitat makes Botia birdi a subtropical rather than tropical fish. It is an obligate current-dweller, not suited to warm or stagnant conditions. In the aquarium, replicating this profile — a well-filtered, powerhead-boosted flow, consistently cool temperatures, and high dissolved oxygen — is essential for the fish's long-term health. It should not be housed in a standard warm tropical community tank.

Feeding

Botia birdi is an omnivore that leans strongly toward small invertebrates, in keeping with the typical botiid diet. In its native hill streams it forages over gravel and among substrate rubble for insect larvae, small worms, tiny crustaceans and molluscs. The taste for snails shared by botiids generally makes this loach a useful natural check on pest snail populations in a well-planted tank — it can crush snails with its pharyngeal teeth.

In the aquarium, the diet should consist of sinking pellets and wafers of quality composition, supplemented regularly with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia and Tubifex. Being partly crepuscular to nocturnal in its foraging habits, a feeding after lights-out ensures that shyer, lower-ranking individuals in the group receive their share. A purely flake-based surface diet is unsuitable; this is a bottom-feeder that needs food delivered to the substrate.

Mating

Reliable external sexing criteria for Botia birdi are not documented in accessible hobby or scientific literature. In related botiids, mature females can sometimes be distinguished by a fuller, rounder abdomen when in breeding condition, but the difference is subtle and inconsistent. The combination of small size, poor documentation and the fish's rarity in the hobby means that mating behaviour under aquarium conditions has not been described in any source traced here.

In the wild, botiid loaches in general spawn in association with the annual monsoon flood cycle. Rising water levels, increased flow, and the influx of cooler rain water trigger breeding migrations into shallower, faster upland reaches. Whether Botia birdi follows the same pattern — as expected for a hill-stream resident — has not been confirmed by field study, but the habitat context makes a seasonal, flow-triggered reproductive strategy probable.

Breeding

Botia birdi is not bred in home aquaria, so far as documented sources record. It is an egg-scattering species with no parental care — botiids scatter eggs into flowing water and take no further role in the eggs or larvae — and the combination of its rarity in the hobby, its poor documentation, and the demanding environmental requirements of its native hill streams means that verified spawnings in captivity are unknown.

The commercial supply of Botia birdi, when it enters the trade at all, is presumed to be wild-caught from its native Assam range. This is in contrast to the clown loach, where the trade relies on large-scale hormone-induced farm production; Botia birdi is too obscure to support that infrastructure. Keepers should have no expectation of breeding this fish at home, and should source specimens through the legitimate ornamental fisheries trade.

In the aquarium

Botia birdi requires a setup that departs meaningfully from the warm tropical community tank in which most loaches are sold. The most important parameter is temperature: this is a cool-water fish from Himalayan hill streams, and it performs best at 64–75 °F. A tank run at typical tropical temperatures of 79–82 °F will stress it over time. A cool, well-aerated, powerhead-driven current setup — closer to what is kept for hillstream loaches or temperate barbs — is appropriate.

Being a botiid, it is obligate-social and must be kept in a group of at least five individuals. Kept singly or in pairs, it turns skittish, withdrawn or, in some botiids, aggressive toward other fish. A properly sized shoal forms its own hierarchy — lower-ranking fish defer to dominant ones at feeding time — which is why generous, well-distributed feeding matters. The suborbital spine makes net handling hazardous; use a container to transfer the fish. The near-scaleless skin is sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications, yet like other botiids this species can be the first in a tank to show ich. Treat with caution, at half-dose or with copper-free products, and watch the group closely for early signs of disease.

A sandy or fine-gravel substrate with smooth rocks and robust hiding places suits the species well. Softer, acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) is appropriate. Strong filtration with high oxygenation is non-negotiable. Given its adult size of 2–3 in and its shoaling requirement, a tank of 20 US gal or more for a group of five is a practical minimum.

Conservation

Botia birdi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its natural range is narrow — restricted to the hill streams of Assam, northeastern India — and while no field surveys have been published assessing its population status in accessible literature, the characteristics that typically flag range-restricted stream fish as potentially vulnerable are all present: a small geographic footprint, specialised habitat requirements (cool, fast-flowing, clean upland streams), and a region facing ongoing land-use pressures from agriculture, deforestation, and catchment modification across the Brahmaputra basin.

The species does not appear to sustain a significant ornamental trade, and wild-collection pressure is unlikely to be a primary driver of any population change at present. The more relevant threat would be habitat degradation — siltation, reduced flow, and water quality decline in the small hill-stream tributaries it depends on. More field survey data and a formal Red List assessment would be of value for this poorly-known endemic.
