Taxonomy & naming
Danio kyathit was formally described by Fang in 1998 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (8(3): 273–280), based on specimens collected from three tributaries of the upper Ayeyarwaddy system in Kachin State, northern Myanmar: the Hpa-Lap Chaung, the Mogaung Chaung and the Chindwin Myit (Chindwin River). The type locality is Hpa Lap Chaung stream, roughly 10 mi north-west of Myitkyina at 25°32'08″N 97°23'02″E.
The species was placed in Brachydanio at description, reflecting the older split of smaller-bodied danios from the larger Danio. That separation has since been rejected in the mainstream literature: the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) treats Brachydanio as a synonym of Danio, placing this species as Danio kyathit Fang, 1998. Some aquarium literature still carries the obsolete Brachydanio combination; the current valid name is Danio kyathit.
GBIF records the original publication details consistently with FishBase. No subspecies or geographic variants have been formally described, though the original type series was taken from three distinct drainages, suggesting the known populations are not restricted to a single stream.
Morphology
Danio kyathit is a small fish, reaching approximately 1.5–2 in standard length (SL) in the aquarium; FishBase records a maximum of about 1.5 in SL for wild specimens, with aquarium fish sometimes growing slightly larger under favourable conditions. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the typical danio fashion, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.
The common name orange-finned danio captures the most immediately striking feature: the dorsal, caudal and anal fins carry warm orange to amber pigmentation that contrasts with the spotted, leopard-like pattern on the flanks. The lateral patterning consists of irregular dark spots and a reticulated or broken-stripe arrangement rather than the continuous horizontal stripes of the zebra danio, which is why the species attracted its Burmese vernacular name meaning leopard.
Sexual dimorphism is present but modest. Males are slimmer and more torpedo-shaped, and in good condition show stronger fin colour. Females are noticeably thicker-bodied through the abdomen and less streamlined, becoming visibly rotund when carrying a clutch of eggs. FishBase notes this difference in body shape as the main sexually diagnostic character.
Habitat
Danio kyathit inhabits the fast-running hill streams and smaller tributaries of the upper Ayeyarwaddy drainage in Kachin State, northern Myanmar. The type locality, Hpa Lap Chaung, is a clear, swift stream in forested country at relatively low elevation, flowing through marginal bamboo and overhanging riparian vegetation with substantial leaf litter on the substrate. The streambed carries mud and small stones, and the water is typically clear but may carry a slight brownish tint from organic matter.
Water parameters recorded at collection sites reflect the cool, soft-to-moderately-hard conditions typical of subtropical Asian hillstreams: temperature 61–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and hardness in the range of 18–90 ppm. This relatively wide range across a narrow temperature band indicates a species adapted to seasonal fluctuation — Kachin State experiences a marked dry season during which stream levels fall and temperatures drop — but not to the extremes of a true tropical lowland fish.
FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, spending time in the middle and lower water column close to the substrate, consistent with foraging in the leaf litter and among stones. The original type series came from three distinct tributary systems — Hpa-Lap Chaung, Mogaung Chaung and the Chindwin — which together define an aggregate range still considered extremely small by IUCN.
Feeding
In nature, Danio kyathit feeds primarily on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, including insects and their larvae washed or fallen into the stream, consistent with the diet of most small danios occupying forested hillstream habitats. The overhanging bamboo and riparian vegetation of its home streams deliver a steady supply of surface-fallen prey, and the slightly upturned mouth and active, mid-water to near-surface behaviour suit a fish that takes food both at the surface and in the water column.
In the aquarium it is undemanding and readily accepts a wide variety of prepared and live foods. Seriouslyfish notes that it takes most standard aquarium foods; offering a varied diet that includes small live or frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) — maintains condition and brings out the orange fin colouration. As with other small danios, feeding several small meals daily rather than one large one better reflects its natural feeding pattern.
Mating
Danio kyathit is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — no nest is built, no pair bond is formed, and neither parent attends the eggs or fry at any stage. In natural conditions spawning is likely triggered by the onset of seasonal rains and the associated rise in water temperature and level that refresh the small streams of Kachin State. A ripe male pursues a gravid female persistently through vegetation or along the streambed, and the pair press close together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
The scattered eggs are adhesive and settle among fine-leaved plants, moss, roots and gravel. Adults will readily consume any eggs they encounter, which in a stream environment are immediately dispersed and hidden; in the aquarium this predation is the main challenge for breeders. There is no courtship display beyond the driving chase, and spawning in a group is common — several males may attend a single female in a healthy shoal.
Breeding
Breeding Danio kyathit follows the standard egg-scatterer protocol used for most small danios. A separate, shallow spawning vessel is prepared with a layer of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort) or a mesh grid above the base so that eggs fall out of the adults' reach. Well-conditioned fish — fed generously on small live or frozen foods for a week or two — are introduced in a ratio of one or two males per female, and spawning usually follows within a day, often triggered at dawn.
Females may release a few dozen to several hundred eggs per session. Adults should be removed promptly after spawning to prevent predation. At temperatures in the mid-twenties Celsius, eggs hatch in roughly 24–48 hours; the tiny larvae absorb their yolk sac over a further two to three days before becoming free-swimming, at which point they take infusoria, rotifers or commercial micro-foods, moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Growth is relatively fast and the young fish begin to show colour within a few weeks.
In the aquarium
Danio kyathit is a rewarding, active hillstream danio for the experienced hobbyist seeking something beyond the ubiquitous zebra danio. It is not as commonly available as some congeners, which reflects both its restricted wild range and its Near Threatened status, but it does appear in specialist trade. Its cool-water requirements — 61–79 °F — mean it can be kept without a heater in a temperate room or in a lightly heated hillstream biotope setup.
As a schooling fish it must be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals; smaller numbers lead to stress and the persistent harassment of single females by males. An aquarium with good surface agitation from a filter outlet, moderate flow, fine-leaved planting and a darker substrate shows the orange fin pigmentation to best effect. The pH range of 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water are easily achieved with most tap supplies. It is compatible with other cool-water, similarly sized fishes but should not be housed with slow-moving or long-finned species that might be harassed by its fast, active schooling behaviour.
Given its conservation status, sourcing captive-bred specimens is strongly preferred over wild-caught imports. Responsible keepers who successfully breed the species make a meaningful contribution to reducing collection pressure on a fish whose known wild populations are few and geographically restricted.
Conservation
Danio kyathit is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2010, appearing in the 2022.2 update). The assessment is driven by its extremely restricted range — fewer than five known locations in the upper Irrawaddy basin — and by two compounding threats: collection for the ornamental fish trade (the species' small size, spotted pattern and colourful fins make it commercially attractive) and ongoing habitat degradation from destructive fishing practices and the broader pressures of agricultural and infrastructure development in Kachin State.
With so few confirmed localities, any local population crash has proportionally large effects on the global population. The IUCN notes that updated field surveys are needed to clarify current population status and whether additional populations exist in the many small Ayeyarwaddy tributaries that remain poorly surveyed. Captive breeding in the hobby, while modest in scale, reduces direct collection pressure and may prove important if wild habitat continues to deteriorate.
