Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius margarianus was described by the Scottish zoologist John Anderson in 1879 as Barbus margarianus, based on material from the Nampoung River in upper Burma collected during the Yunnan Expeditions. The species was later carried under the genus Systomus and for a time lumped broadly within the old polyphyletic Puntius before being placed in its current genus. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Poropuntius margarianus (Anderson, 1879), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from Anderson's original Barbus.
The genus Poropuntius was revised in a comprehensive 1998 monograph by Tyson R. Roberts (Natural History Bulletin of the Siam Society 46: 105–135), which stands as the primary taxonomic reference for the group. Roberts characterised Poropuntius by distinctive cranial and mouth-part morphology (the name alludes to pored or pitted markings) and described numerous new species and trophic morphs across tropical Asia. The IUCN notes that additional taxonomic work is needed on the Myanmar Poropuntius fauna, meaning the boundaries of this species relative to similar Irrawaddy congeners may yet be refined.
The known occurrence in Yunnan extends the range into the Longchuan Jiang (Dragon River) and Daying Jiang drainages — eastern tributaries of the upper Irrawaddy — in addition to the Nampoung type locality.
Morphology
Poropuntius margarianus reaches a maximum standard length of 6 in (FishBase), making it one of the larger members of the genus. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the cyprinid-typical small, subterminal mouth adapted for picking food from surfaces.
The species is strikingly pale in fresh condition: the body is nearly white or silvery, with a semi-translucent quality that gives rise to the common name 'glass barb'. The fins are nearly colourless, but both the dorsal and caudal fins carry dark pigment on the interradial membranes — a diagnostic feature noted in the FishBase diagnosis. Scale counts include 12 predorsal scales and a transverse row formula of 6/1/3. This combination of scale counts and pale silvery colouration, together with the restricted dark fin pigmentation, distinguishes P. margarianus from the more richly coloured Poropuntius species found further south and west.
Habitat
The IUCN Red List characterises the habitat of Poropuntius margarianus as larger streams and rivers with faster-flowing clear water — a benthopelagic freshwater fish of permanent rivers and streams rather than sluggish lowland channels or swamps. This is consistent with the species' occurrence in the upper Irrawaddy basin, a region of montane and submontane drainages where streams run clear and cool to warm.
The range lies in a subtropical to warm-temperate zone in Yunnan and northern Myanmar, at elevations above the lowland tropical belt typical of most Poropuntius relatives further south. Water quality in these hill streams is typically well-oxygenated and relatively clear, with moderate to low organic staining. Specific temperature, pH or hardness data are not recorded in available sources for this species, but the upper Irrawaddy and its Yunnan tributaries carry moderately hard, near-neutral water reflecting the limestone and metamorphic geology of the region.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Poropuntius margarianus has been published, and available sources do not record specific gut-content data. The species' morphology — a moderately sized cyprinid with a subterminal mouth suited to browsing near the substrate — is consistent with an omnivorous diet typical of the genus: invertebrates, algae, detritus and organic material gleaned from rock surfaces and the stream bed.
Roberts' 1998 monograph on Poropuntius documented varied trophic morphs within the genus, with some species showing specialised oral anatomy for scraping hard substrates and others more generalised. Where P. margarianus falls on this spectrum is not resolved from current data; in the absence of direct evidence, an omnivorous benthic feeding mode is the reasonable working assumption.
Mating
Poropuntius margarianus has not been studied in detail with respect to reproductive behaviour, and no aquarium breeding accounts appear in accessible literature. As a member of the family Cyprinidae it almost certainly follows the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal in the barb lineage: a ripe male pursues a gravid female over the substrate or through cover, and eggs and milt are released together with no subsequent parental investment.
In larger rheophilic cyprinids of similar habit, spawning often coincides with seasonal flooding or rising water levels that act as a cue and carry eggs downstream into calmer nursery habitat. Whether P. margarianus follows a seasonal migratory spawning pattern typical of larger Irrawaddy basin fishes, or spawns more opportunistically in the streams it inhabits year-round, is not documented.
Breeding
Poropuntius margarianus is not known to have been bred in captivity, and no records of aquarium reproduction appear in accessible sources. Based on its cyprinid affinity and the reproductive biology of congeners, the mode would be egg-scattering over the substrate or vegetation, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs and no parental care of any kind — adults would offer no guarding of eggs or fry after spawning.
Fecundity and incubation data are not available. At its size of up to roughly 6 in, P. margarianus would likely produce a relatively large egg batch per spawning event compared with smaller barb species, but this remains unquantified. Breeding in captivity would be a novel contribution to knowledge of the species.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius margarianus is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. No trade records, importation accounts or captive-husbandry notes appear in accessible literature, and it is not listed in mainstream ornamental fish databases. Its size — approaching 6.5 in — and its origin in fast-flowing clear hill streams would require a spacious, well-oxygenated aquarium with a strong current if it were ever to be kept successfully.
Interest in the genus Poropuntius in the aquarium trade has historically been low relative to the brightly coloured dwarf barbs, but larger, more unusual species from the upper Irrawaddy region have occasionally attracted specialist collectors. Should specimens become available, a roomy tank with clean, well-filtered and oxygen-rich water, a moderate to high flow rate, and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH reflecting the Yunnan hill-stream environment would be the recommended starting point.
Conservation
Poropuntius margarianus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded by Britz and Dahanukar in 2010 (IUCN 2025-2, assessment ID 6482613). The Data Deficient status reflects a genuine lack of information on the species' population size, trend and the extent and quality of its habitat rather than an absence of concern — the IUCN notes that taxonomic uncertainty over the Myanmar Poropuntius fauna further complicates evaluation.
The upper Irrawaddy basin and its Yunnan tributaries face pressures from dam construction, sedimentation associated with upland land conversion, and water extraction, all of which affect clear fast-flowing hill streams. The species' narrow, fragmented range across a politically complex border region between China and Myanmar means that systematic surveys are difficult to undertake. Until baseline population and range data are gathered and the taxonomic status of Irrawaddy Poropuntius is resolved, the true conservation situation of P. margarianus will remain uncertain.
