Taxonomy & naming
Pethia thelys was formally described by Sven Kullander and Fang Fang in 2008 and was originally placed in the old catch-all genus Puntius as Puntius thelys. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Pethia thelys (Kullander & Fang, 2008), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Kullander and Fang's original placement.
The genus Pethia was erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 as part of a wide revision that broke up the unwieldy Puntius aggregate along molecular and morphological lines. Pethia is centred on the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka, which gives P. thelys a curious biogeographic position: a member of a predominantly South Asian lineage occurring well to the north-east in the upper Irrawaddy watershed of Kachin State, Myanmar.
The species epithet thelys derives from the Greek word for "female," a reference to the preponderance of females in the type series collected by Kullander and Fang — a quirk of the original material rather than a biological statement about the species.
Morphology
Pethia thelys is a compact barb reaching approximately 1.5 in in standard length. Like others in the genus it has the short-bodied, laterally compressed profile typical of small Asian cyprinids, with a relatively small head, a terminal mouth, and well-developed dorsal and caudal fins.
Detailed colour descriptions for live specimens are sparse in the published literature; the original description and associated material give the primary morphological data. The species shows the basic Pethia build without the boldly banded or spotted patterning that makes some congeners (such as P. ticto or P. conchonius) immediately recognisable — P. thelys is a comparatively plainly marked small barb. Sexual dimorphism within the genus is generally mild but females typically become fuller-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Pethia thelys is recorded from streams near Myitkyina and around Lake Indawgyi in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — both localities in the upper Irrawaddy drainage. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic freshwater, occupying the flowing and associated lentic waters of this highland region.
The Kachin State streams inhabited by P. thelys drain relatively cool, well-oxygenated highland terrain compared with the warmer lowland rivers of central Myanmar. Congeners in the genus Pethia that share similar highland-stream habitats across the subcontinent tend to favour clear, fast-flowing water with near-neutral to mildly acidic pH and moderate temperatures. Water temperature data specific to the Myitkyina and Indawgyi sites suggest a range broadly in the region of 59–77 °F across seasons, consistent with the habitat note recorded for co-occurring Pethia species in the region.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies have been published for Pethia thelys specifically. The broader Pethia genus, like the old Puntius assemblage from which it was segregated, consists of omnivorous opportunists: small cyprinids that pick invertebrates, algae, plant matter and fine organic detritus from the substrate and water column in proportion to seasonal availability.
In the aquarium, species of this size and build do well on a varied diet of good-quality micro-pellets or crushed flake, supplemented with small live and frozen items such as daphnia, micro-worms and newly hatched brine shrimp. Plant matter and spirulina-enriched foods help round out the diet and support colour.
Mating
Pethia thelys, as a member of the egg-scattering barb clade, spawns without building a nest and without forming a lasting pair bond. Courtship follows the pattern common across Pethia and the wider cyprinid barbs: a ripe male pursues and drives a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair making brief contact as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
No parental territory is established and neither sex guards eggs or fry. Spawning activity in small barbs of this kind is often correlated with temperature drops or rainfall cues that mimic the onset of the monsoon, as well as with good nutritional condition. In the wild, eggs scatter into the streambed or among aquatic vegetation and are left entirely to chance.
Breeding
Pethia thelys has not been widely bred in captivity and specific aquarium breeding accounts are absent from the accessible hobby literature. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related Pethia species, the standard approach for breeding small barbs of this body plan applies: a separate, shallow spawning vessel with slightly acidic, clean water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate layer — mesh or glass marbles — through which scattered eggs can fall out of the adults' reach.
Eggs in the genus are adhesive and small; adults will consume eggs and larvae if not removed promptly after spawning. Larvae typically become free-swimming within a few days at cooler highland temperatures. The species' documented scarcity in the trade means captive-breeding data remain limited; hobbyists working with confirmed wild-caught stock would add meaningful observations to the literature.
In the aquarium
Pethia thelys is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and is essentially unknown in the mainstream trade. Its small size (around 1.5 in SL) and origins in cool, oxygenated highland streams in Kachin State suggest it would be best housed in a smaller, species-focused setup with clean, well-filtered water, moderate flow, and temperatures toward the cooler end of the tropical range — broadly 64–75 °F.
As with most small barbs, shoaling behaviour is expected, and a group of six or more individuals would allow natural social dynamics. A fine-gravel or sandy substrate with some plant cover and open swimming space suits the benthopelagic habits of the genus. Until the species becomes more readily available through specialist breeders, captive care information will remain inferential from congeners.
Conservation
Pethia thelys is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species is a Myanmar endemic with a range centred on streams near Myitkyina and Lake Indawgyi in Kachin State — a relatively remote part of northern Myanmar that, at time of assessment, did not face the same intensity of agricultural and industrial pressures affecting more densely settled river systems.
Nonetheless, the species' restricted known range and dependence on clean highland streams place it in a category that warrants monitoring. Lake Indawgyi is a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance, which provides some degree of habitat protection for the lake system itself; the associated tributaries and inlet streams that P. thelys inhabits are more vulnerable to changes in land use, sedimentation and water abstraction in the broader Kachin watershed. The species is not documented as a significant item in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not considered a current threat.
