Taxonomy & naming
Inlecypris jayarami was first described by R.P. Barman in 1985 under the combination Devario jayarami, placing it in the broad catch-all genus Devario alongside many other South and Southeast Asian danionines. Subsequent revision by Kottelat elevated a small group of Myanmar plateau species — including jayarami — into the genus Inlecypris, named for Lake Inle (Inle + cypris, from the Greek for a cyprinid). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Inlecypris jayarami (Barman, 1985), with the parenthetical authority marking the move from Barman's original genus.
Inlecypris currently comprises four recognised species: I. auropurpurea (the type), I. jayarami, I. shanensis and I. maetaengensis. All are confined to the Salween drainage or adjacent Myanmar plateau waters, distinguishing them from the more wide-ranging Devario species of mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia. The species was named in honour of Dr K.C. Jayaram (1926–2012), Joint Director of the Zoological Survey of India and an eminent authority on freshwater fishes of the Indian subcontinent.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Inlecypris jayarami are sparse in the accessible literature. Like its congener I. auropurpurea, it is presumed to be a slim, moderately elongate cyprinid with the general body plan of the danionine clade — a slightly compressed, streamlined form suited to flowing or at least well-oxygenated water. The genus as a whole is characterised by features that distinguish it from Devario, though the exact suite of characters used to erect Inlecypris requires the original revision for full detail.
Because I. jayarami has been documented primarily from Lake Inle itself, its precise coloration and meristic data remain poorly published in hobbyist or mainstream scientific literature. Size data are similarly absent from the primary accessible sources; FishBase lists the species but records no maximum length, and it is treated here as data sparse on that point.
Habitat
Inlecypris jayarami is recorded as an endemic or near-endemic of the Lake Inle system in Shan State, Myanmar, within the Salween basin. Lake Inle is a large, shallow freshwater lake on the Shan Plateau at roughly 2871 ft elevation — an unusual environment combining a highland altitude with subtropical warmth moderated by elevation. FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic, indicating it occupies the lower water column and substrate zone.
The lake's waters are generally clear to slightly turbid, with a broadly neutral to slightly alkaline chemistry reflecting the limestone geology of the plateau. The surrounding area includes inflowing streams, reed beds of floating gardens and shallow marginal zones that are typical for danionine fishes. The congener I. auropurpurea is associated with clear, flowing hillstream habitats, suggesting that Inlecypris as a genus favours well-oxygenated, relatively clean water rather than sluggish or heavily silted lowland rivers.
Feeding
No specific dietary data have been published for Inlecypris jayarami. By analogy with the broader danionine assemblage — and with congeners in Inlecypris and closely related genera such as Devario — the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore or micropredator, taking small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, zooplankton and organic material from the water column and near the substrate.
In the aquarium, fish of this type typically accept small live and frozen invertebrates (daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworm) and quality micro-pellets or fine flakes without difficulty. Given the absence of specific data, caution is appropriate in extrapolating feeding behaviour, but the danionine body plan — active swimming, a small upturned or terminal mouth — is consistent with a surface-to-midwater opportunistic feeder.
Mating
No published accounts of courtship behaviour in Inlecypris jayarami are available. As a member of the danionine cyprinids, it is expected to follow the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal in the group. In related species, a ready male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, the pair pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously with no lasting pair bond.
The eggs receive no care after spawning. In many danionine species the adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, so the strategy is one of quantity over investment — releasing many small, adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs in a single session and leaving their fate to the environment.
Breeding
Breeding in Inlecypris jayarami has not been documented in the hobby or scientific literature accessible for this profile. Based on the reproductive biology of all known danionines and the specific note from congener I. auropurpurea, the species is an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss or substrate without providing parental care of any kind. Adults do not guard eggs or fry, and the larvae are independent from hatching.
For any hobbyist working with this species, standard danionine breeding protocol would be appropriate: a densely planted or moss-floored spawning vessel, conditioning on live or frozen invertebrates, a slight temperature rise and water change to trigger spawning, and prompt removal of adults after eggs are deposited to prevent predation on the clutch.
In the aquarium
Inlecypris jayarami is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby outside Myanmar and specialist circles. Its restricted endemic range, limited export and near-absence from the international trade mean very few aquarists have kept or documented it. What is known of the genus suggests these are active, shoaling danionines that would require a longer tank with open swimming space, clean well-oxygenated water and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH consistent with the limestone-influenced chemistry of the Shan Plateau.
If encountered, the species should be kept in a group of at least six individuals, as isolation or small numbers cause stress in schooling danionines. The water should be kept clean and well-filtered, temperature modest given its plateau origin, and the diet varied with small live and frozen invertebrates alongside quality dried foods. Its rarity and restricted range make responsible sourcing essential; wild-caught specimens from Lake Inle should be obtained only from traceable, sustainable sources.
Conservation
Inlecypris jayarami is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 8 March 2011. The DD designation reflects the lack of sufficient information to assign a threat category rather than an absence of concern; for a species confined to or centred on Lake Inle, the conservation situation is in practice worrying.
Lake Inle faces substantial anthropogenic pressure: agricultural runoff from surrounding hillsides (including intensive floating-garden horticulture on the lake itself), siltation from deforestation on the Shan watershed, water extraction and the expansion of tourism infrastructure have all degraded water quality and reduced habitat complexity in recent decades. Several endemic fishes of Lake Inle have declined markedly, and the lake's ecological integrity has been identified as under serious threat. Without dedicated surveys and updated population data for I. jayarami specifically, its status cannot be properly evaluated — making investment in baseline survey work the most urgent conservation need.
