Taxonomy & naming
Esomus metallicus was described by Ernst Ahl in 1923, with the formal publication appearing in his 1924 revision of the genus Esomus — 'Eine Revision der Cypriniden-Gattung Esomus' in the Ichthyologische Mitteilungen — a bibliographic discrepancy that places the authority year as 1923 by the convention of first availability. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) and GBIF both record the valid combination as Esomus metallicus Ahl, 1923, within the family Cyprinidae.
The genus Esomus groups the flying barbs — small, elongate, surface-dwelling cyprinids distinguished from their danionin relatives by extremely elongated pectoral fins and a characteristic pair of very long maxillary barbels reaching past the pectoral fin base. Esomus is now placed within the broader danionin clade that includes Danio and Devario, and the group is sometimes loosely called 'flying barbs' in the hobby because of their propensity to leap from the water. No subspecies or geographic variants have been formally described for E. metallicus; a new distributional record from the Kapalo Banda River in West Sumatra was published in 2023, confirming natural colonisation of the Sundaic region.
Morphology
Esomus metallicus is a small, stream-lined cyprinid reaching up to 3 in standard length, with most aquarium specimens maturing around 2 in. The body is noticeably elongate and laterally compressed, tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle. The mouth is strongly upturned, fitting a fish that feeds at the surface, and is flanked by a very long pair of maxillary barbels that reach well past the pectoral fin base — the hallmark of the genus.
The pectoral fins are unusually enlarged, projecting forward and outward in a manner that gives the fish its aerial ability. Coloration is metallic silver to pale gold along the flanks, with a dark midlateral stripe running from behind the eye to the base of the caudal fin; above this stripe the back is olive to greenish-brown, below it the belly is silvery white. The 'metallicus' epithet refers to this metallic sheen. Sexual dimorphism is modest: females are deeper-bodied when gravid and generally more rotund than the more torpedo-shaped males.
Habitat
The striped flying barb occupies the shallow, warm, slow-moving and standing fresh waters of lowland Southeast Asia. Its preferred habitats are rice paddies, irrigation canals, roadside ditches, swamps and the margins of small sluggish streams — particularly seasonally inundated areas that fill with the monsoon rains. It avoids the main channels of large rivers, preferring still or barely moving water with abundant aquatic vegetation and overhanging bank cover.
Water conditions across this range are warm and typically soft to moderately hard. Seriously Fish records temperatures of 68–79 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.0, with hardness up to about 215 ppm — parameters consistent with the seasonally fluctuating, lowland, often agricultural waters the species inhabits. As a committed surface-dweller, it is typically found in the uppermost water column, where it feeds and shoals close to the film.
Feeding
Esomus metallicus is an active surface feeder in the wild, taking small invertebrates — insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and similar soft-bodied prey — from the water surface and just beneath it. Its upturned mouth and positioned posture at the surface make it well-suited to snatching terrestrial insects that fall onto the water, and its elongated pectoral fins allow brief bursts of speed or even short aerial leaps to intercept prey.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to dried foods, accepting quality flake and micro-pellets, but it shows best colour and condition when the diet includes live and frozen items such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and chironomid larvae. Feeding at or just below the surface is optimal; sinking foods may go largely ignored. Its active, fast-moving foraging style means it competes effectively at mealtimes and should be kept with similarly active tankmates.
Mating
Esomus metallicus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner typical of the danionin clade. In nature, spawning is linked to the monsoon season when shallow floodwaters warm and new aquatic vegetation becomes available. Ready males pursue gravid females actively through the water column and surface vegetation, driving them persistently until the pair briefly presses together and releases eggs and milt simultaneously.
There is no pair bond, no territory, and no nest of any kind. Spawning events are brief, repeated and often involve several males pursuing a single female. The scattered eggs, which are adhesive or weakly adhesive, fall among plants or onto the substrate and receive no further attention from either parent. Adults will readily consume eggs given the opportunity.
Breeding
Under aquarium conditions, natural spawning of Esomus metallicus is reportedly uncommon without hormonal induction, though a well-conditioned group kept in planted, warm water may occasionally spawn spontaneously. Experimental reproduction has been achieved via hormone injection, as noted in research contexts, but hobbyist captive breeding is not well documented. This is in contrast to the closely related E. danricus, which spawns freely in the aquarium.
For those attempting breeding, the standard danionid protocol applies: a separate shallow spawning tank with a layer of fine-leaved plants such as java moss or a mesh insert to protect eggs from the parents; a slight temperature increase; and the introduction of well-conditioned, distinguishably plump females alongside active males. If spawning occurs, the adhesive eggs should hatch within a couple of days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing a few days after that. Fry are fed on infusoria followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Parental care is entirely absent; adults should be removed after spawning.
In the aquarium
Esomus metallicus is an underappreciated but rewarding surface-shoaler for the community aquarium. It is best kept in groups of six or more, where its natural schooling behaviour is expressed — lone or small numbers of flying barbs become nervous and prone to dashing or leaping, and the group dynamic keeps the fish confident and visible. A securely lidded tank is essential: these are accomplished jumpers that will find any gap.
A longer tank with open water in the upper half, scattered floating plants or emergent-stem plants for cover, and gentle filtration suits the species well. Water temperatures of 68–79 °F and a pH around 6.0–7.0 match its mainland Southeast Asian habitat. It is compatible with other similarly sized, active mid-water species but should not be kept with very slow-moving or long-finned fishes that it may outcompete at feeding. It is not aggressive and causes no harm to plants.
Conservation
Esomus metallicus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed 26 March 2011. The species is widespread across mainland Southeast Asia — spanning the Salween, Chao Phraya, Mekong and Mae Klong basins of Myanmar and Thailand, extending through Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore — and has now been confirmed in Sumatra, broadening its known range.
The principal threats to flying barb populations are those shared by all inhabitants of lowland, agricultural and seasonally flooded freshwaters in Southeast Asia: pesticide and fertiliser runoff from intensive rice farming, habitat loss through wetland drainage, water extraction for irrigation, and the general degradation of riparian vegetation. While these pressures are real and widespread, the species' broad distribution, tolerance of disturbed and agricultural habitats, and apparent adaptability mean it does not currently approach any threshold of threat. Population trends are not closely monitored.
