Devario affinis is a mid-sized danio of southern Myanmar, known from the hill streams draining the Tenasserim Hills into the Salween basin and the rivers of the Dawei District. Like its relatives in the Devario group, it is a swift, shoaling cyprinid adapted to clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over gravel and rock — precisely the kind of current-scoured hill stream that produces the most active and demanding danio species in the hobby. Originally placed in the long-obsolete genus Perilampus, it was moved to Devario and has remained there under Blyth's 1860 authority. Its IUCN status is Data Deficient, reflecting the limited distributional data available for this Myanmar endemic.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario affinis was described by Edward Blyth in 1860 from the Tenasserim region of what is now southern Myanmar. Blyth placed it in the genus Perilampus, an early grouping for small Indian and Southeast Asian cyprinids that has since been largely dismantled. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the current valid combination as Devario affinis (Blyth, 1860), the parenthetical authority indicating transfer out of the original genus.

The genus Devario holds the giant danios — larger-bodied, more robust relatives of the smaller Danio species, typically from the hill streams and rivers of South and Southeast Asia. Devario was erected to separate these bigger, more elongate danios from the smaller Brachydanio/Danio cluster, and the split is now well established. Devario affinis is associated with the broader Tenasserim/Salween biogeographic zone of southern Myanmar, a region that has produced a number of narrowly endemic cyprinids.

Morphology

Devario affinis is a moderately sized danio reaching approximately 3 in standard length, placing it squarely in the giant danio size range. Like other Devario, the body is elongate and laterally compressed, built for sustained movement in fast water, with a slightly upturned mouth indicative of a surface-oriented or mid-water feeder.

Sexual dimorphism follows the usual pattern seen across the Devario group: females are deeper-bodied and somewhat larger than males, with a more rounded abdomen when gravid, while males are slimmer and typically show brighter or more contrasting coloration. Precise colour descriptions for this species are sparse in the available literature, but the genus generally shows horizontal striping or banding along the flanks, often in blue, gold or silver tones.

Habitat

Devario affinis is endemic to southern Myanmar, where it inhabits hill streams draining the Tenasserim Hills and rivers of the lower Salween basin, including the Dawei District of the Tanintharyi Region. Its habitat is the classic giant danio environment: clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams with gravel and rock substrate, carrying cool, moderately soft water from higher elevations.

These Tenasserim hill streams are among the cleaner, more oxygen-rich freshwater environments in mainland Southeast Asia, largely because the terrain is steep, the catchments still forested, and seasonal rainfall keeps flows strong. Devario affinis is adapted to high dissolved oxygen and moderate to brisk current — conditions that must be approximated in captivity to keep the species in good health.

Feeding

Devario affinis is an insectivore and opportunistic surface-to-mid-water predator, in keeping with the feeding style typical of Devario across the group. In its native hill streams the diet will consist primarily of terrestrial and aquatic insects, fallen invertebrates, and small crustaceans carried by the current — the kind of drift food that characterises fast, rocky watercourses.

In the aquarium, this translates well to a diet of high-quality flake or small pellet foods supplemented generously with live and frozen invertebrates: daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworm, and similar items. Its upturned mouth and active swimming style confirm a fish that takes food from the surface and upper water column, and regular offerings of varied, protein-rich foods will maintain colour and breeding condition.

Mating

Devario affinis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond, and no parental care of any kind. In nature, spawning in hill-stream Devario is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increased flow after rain, or longer daylight hours — and takes place in vegetated margins or over gravel riffles.

Courtship consists of males driving gravid females through the water column, the pair pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The eggs are weakly adhesive and scatter among plants, gravel, or bottom debris. Adults will eat eggs if they encounter them, and no territory or guarding behaviour has been reported for this species or its close Devario relatives.

Breeding

Breeding Devario affinis in captivity follows the standard egg-scattering protocol used for other giant danios. A separate spawning tank with a fine-leaved plant mass or a mesh-covered gravel bottom helps protect the eggs from the adults. Well-conditioned fish — fed heavily on live and frozen invertebrates for two to three weeks — are introduced in the evening, and spawning typically occurs in the early morning hours.

Females may deposit several hundred eggs over the course of a session. The adults should be removed promptly after spawning is complete. At appropriate temperatures the eggs hatch in two to three days, and the larvae become free-swimming a few days later, at which point they will take infusoria, powdered fry food, or freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Good water quality and frequent small water changes are especially important given this species' adaptation to well-oxygenated, clean hill-stream water.

In the aquarium

Devario affinis is a species that demands well-oxygenated, clean water with moderate to brisk flow. A powerhead or spray-bar return directed across the surface, combined with weekly water changes of 30–50%, is essential to replicate the hill-stream conditions this fish expects. It is intolerant of stagnant, warm, or oxygen-depleted conditions and will decline quickly if these are not addressed.

Like all Devario, it is a strong and energetic swimmer that needs a reasonably spacious tank — a tank of at least 35.5 in in length is appropriate for a shoal. It should be kept in groups of six or more, as it is a social species and single specimens or small groups become stressed. Tankmates should be robust, similarly active fishes able to cope with current and competition at feeding time. Décor of smooth stones, minimal fine gravel, and hardy plants suits the hill-stream aesthetic and the fish's biology.

Conservation

Devario affinis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The designation reflects the limited distributional and population data available for this Myanmar endemic rather than confirmed abundance or security: the species is known from a geographically restricted area in the Tenasserim Hills and lower Salween basin, and the quality and extent of its habitat have not been systematically surveyed.

Southern Myanmar's forests and freshwater systems face pressure from logging, agricultural conversion, and infrastructure development in lowland areas. Hill-stream specialists with narrow natural ranges are inherently vulnerable to catchment disturbance. Until field surveys provide reliable population estimates and distribution maps, the true conservation status of Devario affinis cannot be determined, and treating it with the caution due a range-restricted Myanmar endemic is prudent.
