Rasbora adisi is a small, laterally compressed cyprinid endemic to the eastern river basins of Sri Lanka, reaching roughly 3 in standard length and described only in 2020 after molecular phylogenetic work uncovered it as a cryptic species hiding within what had appeared to be a single taxon. Its formal name, drawn from the Sinhala word for 'mysterious' or 'enigmatic', reflects exactly how it was revealed — not by morphological novelty but by the genetic distances that separated it from its closest relatives in the same clade. The Gal oya striped rasbora inhabits lotic and lentic freshwaters of the Gal Oya, Menik River and Kumbukkan River basins, moving in shoals through the upper water column, and its restricted range in a heavily threatened island landscape raises immediate conservation concern even ahead of any formal IUCN assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora adisi was described by Sudasinghe, Pethiyagoda, Hettiarachchige, Ranasinghe, Raghavan, Dahanukar and Meegaskumbura in 2020, making it one of the most recently erected members of the genus. The species was not discovered in an unexplored stream but rather extracted from within a morphologically similar complex through molecular phylogenetic analysis — a pattern that has become increasingly common among South Asian cyprinids as genetic tools are brought to museum collections and freshly collected material. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Rasbora adisi Sudasinghe et al., 2020.

The species belongs to a clade of Sri Lankan rasboras that also includes Rasbora armitagei, R. microcephalus, R. naggsi and R. wilpita. The pattern of distribution among these closely related species, each largely confined to separate drainage systems on the island, is consistent with historical inter-basin dispersal via headwater capture rather than a single vicariant event. No synonyms are currently recorded and no prior combination under another genus exists, as the species was described as a new taxon directly into Rasbora.

The genus Rasbora itself has contracted considerably over the past two decades as molecular and morphological revisions carved out Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora and other genera from what was once a catch-all group. Rasbora adisi has not been implicated in any such redescription and is held in Rasbora under current classification.

Morphology

Rasbora adisi is a moderately large rasbora, recorded to approximately 3 in standard length (males and unsexed specimens; FishBase) — larger than many of the ornamental Asian rasboras popular in the aquarium hobby. Published material from the original description gives roughly 3 in SL as a representative adult size. The body is laterally compressed and elongate in the cyprinid fashion, with the benthopelagic schooling form typical of Rasbora.

As its common name ('striped rasbora') implies, the species is marked along the flank with a lateral stripe pattern, a feature shared with several members of its clade. The precise extent and colouration of this stripe, relative to the closely related species with which it was formerly confused, would be among the diagnostic characters used to separate the members of the complex. Full morphometric and meristic details are given in the 2020 species description. Specific data on fin formula, scale counts and colour pattern in life are not independently accessible from the sources surveyed here beyond what the common name implies.

Habitat

Rasbora adisi is endemic to Sri Lanka, where its confirmed range spans the eastern river systems of the island: the Gal Oya basin (the type locality is Kotagama within this drainage), the Menik River and the Kumbukkan River. These are rivers of Sri Lanka's dry zone and transition zone, flowing eastward or southeastward into the Indian Ocean, and they differ in character from the wetter southwestern streams with which much of the island's endemic freshwater fauna is associated.

FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic and records it from both lotic (flowing) and lentic (still or slow) freshwater habitats, in groups in the upper water column — the typical school-forming, open-water niche of a mid-sized Rasbora. No specific physicochemical data (temperature range, pH, hardness) are captured in the sources surveyed, which is common for very recently described endemics whose habitats have not been subject to detailed limnological characterisation in the published literature. The eastern Sri Lankan streams where it occurs experience strongly seasonal rainfall and are subject to considerable variation in flow, turbidity and temperature between wet and dry periods.

Feeding

No specific dietary study of Rasbora adisi has been published, and the sources available do not record gut content data for this species. Based on the biology of comparable members of the genus and the general ecology of mid-sized schooling Rasbora, the species is expected to be an omnivore and opportunistic invertebrate feeder in the wild, taking small aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans and other invertebrates from the water column, supplemented by plant matter and detritus.

The upper water column position recorded for the species is consistent with surface-oriented or mid-column feeding behaviour. In the absence of primary data, specific dietary characterisation should be treated as inference from clade-level biology rather than documented fact.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Rasbora adisi are available. Like all members of the genus Rasbora, this species is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner: there is no nest construction, no bubble nest, no mouthbrooding and no parental care of any kind. Courtship in this group typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or open water, the pair pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among plants, fine substrate or root tangles, where the adults take no further interest in them and will readily consume them. This mode is ancestral across the cyprinid clade and consistent for all Rasbora regardless of habitat specialisation.

Breeding

Rasbora adisi has not been bred in captivity in any documented account accessible from the sources surveyed, which is unsurprising for a species described only in 2020 and not yet established in the aquarium hobby. In the wild it is assumed to spawn seasonally, likely tied to the monsoon-driven fluctuation in water level and temperature characteristic of its eastern Sri Lankan river systems, as is typical for stream cyprinids in the region.

Based on the genus-level biology, eggs would be scattered over fine-leaved plants, moss, substrate or root tangles and left entirely without parental care. A separate breeding tank with dense fine-leaved plants or mesh covering the bottom to protect eggs from being eaten would be the appropriate approach if the species were to be bred in captivity, following the standard method for egg-scattering Rasbora. Specific clutch sizes, incubation periods or fry requirements are not available in the literature surveyed.

In the aquarium

Rasbora adisi is not an established aquarium species. It has not appeared in the ornamental fish trade in any documented way, and no husbandry accounts exist in the hobbyist sources available. Given its recent description in 2020 and its status as a Sri Lankan endemic with a restricted range in eastern drainages, it is unlikely to be available commercially in the foreseeable future.

Its size — approaching 3 in SL — places it at the larger end of the typical rasbora aquarium species, comparable to the giant rasbora relatives rather than the miniature species popular in nano aquaria. Should captive stock ever become available through specialist breeders or conservation-linked programmes, it would logically be maintained as a schooling species in a well-planted tank, with water parameters informed by the seasonal, moderately warm freshwaters of eastern Sri Lanka. No specific temperature range, pH or hardness requirements have been characterised for this species in the literature.

Conservation

Rasbora adisi has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List; as of 2025, the species retains a status of Not Evaluated (NE), almost certainly because the time elapsed since its 2020 description has not yet allowed an assessment panel to convene on it. The absence of a formal listing does not imply security.

The species is a strict endemic to three eastern Sri Lankan river basins — Gal Oya, Menik River and Kumbukkan River — a distribution that makes it inherently vulnerable to any catchment-level disturbance. Sri Lanka's freshwater fish fauna is among the most threatened in Asia: deforestation of riparian corridors, agricultural water extraction, sedimentation from hill country clearing, damming for irrigation and urban encroachment on river margins all affect the island's stream fish regardless of drainage system. Eastern Sri Lanka's dry-zone rivers are additionally subject to heavy seasonal extraction for agriculture. Several closely related Sri Lankan rasboras in the same clade are confined to similarly small ranges, and once formal assessments are conducted it would be reasonable to expect most of them, including R. adisi, to qualify for a threatened category on the basis of restricted range and ongoing habitat degradation alone.
