Rasbora aprotaenia is a small, slender cyprinid endemic to the freshwaters of northern and western Java, Indonesia, where it inhabits streams and rivers in the Banten province and adjacent lowlands. Described by Hubbs and Brittan in 1954, it is best known in the hobby as the red-striped rasbora — a name earned by the warm reddish lateral stripe that sets it apart from the many plain-sided members of its large genus. Reaching roughly 2 in in standard length, it is an active, schooling surface-to-midwater fish with the quick, darting temperament typical of Rasbora, and it has attracted modest scientific attention as part of broader studies on Javan cyprinid biodiversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora aprotaenia was described by Carl L. Hubbs and Martin R. Brittan in 1954. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora aprotaenia Hubbs & Brittan, 1954, without parentheses, indicating the species remains in the genus to which it was originally assigned. GBIF places the species within Cyprinidae in the broader Danionidae clade, consistent with the modern molecular reclassification that unites danios, devarios, rasboras and related genera in a single Danionidae lineage — though the traditional family name Cyprinidae still appears widely in older literature and databases including FishBase.

The genus Rasbora is a large and historically catch-all assemblage of small Asian cyprinids that has been substantially revised over recent decades. Kottelat and others have carved out several segregate genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides, among others — leaving a more restricted core Rasbora. R. aprotaenia has remained in Rasbora under current taxonomy without a documented synonym or new combination.

The species epithet aprotaenia derives from Greek: a- (without) + prota (forward, or first) + taenia (band or stripe) — effectively "without a forward band" or "without the anterior stripe," likely referring to a distinguishing feature of the lateral stripe pattern relative to related rasboras. The common name red-striped rasbora alludes to the warm reddish or orange lateral stripe visible in life.

Morphology

Rasbora aprotaenia is a small, elongate, laterally compressed cyprinid. FishBase records a maximum size of 2 in standard length (SL) for male or unsexed specimens, making it a typical mid-sized member of the genus — larger than the miniature Boraras relatives but modest compared to giant rasboras such as R. cephalotaenia.

The most distinctive feature in life is a lateral stripe with a reddish or orange hue running along the midflank, which gives the species its common name and distinguishes it from the many silver-flanked Rasbora. The body is otherwise pale to silvery, with a slightly olive-tinted back. The mouth is terminal and slightly upturned, consistent with a surface-to-midwater feeding habit. Fins are clear to lightly pigmented. Detailed meristic data (scale counts, fin-ray counts) and comparisons with closely related Javan Rasbora are available in the original 1954 description by Hubbs and Brittan.

Sexual dimorphism is modest and typical for the genus: females become noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdomen when gravid; males are trimmer and more torpedo-shaped. FishBase's trophic level of 3.1 places it as a low-level predator on small invertebrates, consistent with its body form and feeding ecology.

Habitat

Rasbora aprotaenia is restricted to northern and western Java, Indonesia. FishBase identifies Banten province (the westernmost province of Java) as part of its documented range, with records from the western and northern regions of the island. Java sits within one of the world's most species-rich and most threatened freshwater biodiversity hotspots — the Sundaland region — and its streams and rivers have been subject to intensive collection effort that has revealed a high degree of endemism among small cyprinids.

FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical fish. Javan lowland streams in the Banten region typically flow through volcanic and alluvial lowlands, with warm water temperatures, variable but generally soft-to-moderate mineral content, and substrates of sand, gravel and organic debris. The species is associated with riverine and stream habitats rather than with the blackwater peat-swamp systems of Sumatra and Borneo, and it is described as having high population resilience and low fishing vulnerability (10 out of 100 on FishBase's vulnerability index).

A DNA barcoding study (ResearchGate 2019) confirmed R. aprotaenia's distribution on Java within a broader investigation of species boundaries among Rasbora and Nemacheilus across Java, Bali and Lombok — underlining both the species' distinct identity and the importance of the island's stream fauna as a focus of conservation-grade biodiversity research.

Feeding

Rasbora aprotaenia is an omnivore and opportunistic micropredator. FishBase's trophic level of 3.1 (feeding primarily at the second and lower third trophic levels) indicates a diet built around small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — supplemented with algae, plant matter and surface-fallen terrestrial insects, consistent with its midwater-to-surface position and the typical feeding ecology of small Rasbora in tropical Southeast Asian streams.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of standard small foods: quality flake, micro pellets and finely crushed dry foods, with live and frozen items such as daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm and baby brine shrimp maintaining colour and breeding condition. Its quick, surface-orientated feeding style is typical of the group. Like most small shoaling rasboras it feeds most confidently when kept in a group, and competition for food within a school helps ensure all fish feed actively.

Mating

Rasbora aprotaenia is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — there is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind after spawning. This reproductive strategy is universal in Rasbora and in the broader danionid group. In natural conditions spawning is likely triggered by the seasonal rise in water temperature and rainfall that marks the tropical wet season, with fish moving into shallower, vegetated marginal habitats to release eggs and milt.

Courtship follows the pattern typical of Rasbora: a sexually active male closely pursues a gravid female, driving her through vegetation or over the substrate. As the pair presses together briefly, eggs and sperm are released simultaneously. The eggs, which are small and weakly adhesive, settle among plant stems, moss, leaf litter or fine gravel. Adults — including the spawning pair — will consume eggs given the opportunity, so in practice the eggs' survival depends on falling out of the adults' reach rather than on any protective behaviour.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Rasbora aprotaenia follows the standard egg-scatterer approach used for most small Asian rasboras. A conditioning period on live and frozen foods brings females into spawning condition; a small, separate breeding tank with a layer of fine-leaved plants, Java moss or a spawning mop, or a mesh or marble base to trap falling eggs, is set up with clean, slightly soft and warm water (around 75–79 °F) at a neutral-to-slightly-acidic pH.

A small group, or a conditioned pair, is introduced in the evening. Spawning typically takes place at dawn over the course of an hour or two, as the male drives the female through the plants. After spawning the adults should be removed promptly to prevent predation on the eggs. The small, transparent eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures, and larvae become free-swimming after a further two to three days. First foods are infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods, transitioning quickly to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and powdered flake as the fry grow. Growth is moderately rapid and the species reaches sexual maturity within a few months. Captive breeding data remain sparse in the published hobby literature for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Rasbora aprotaenia is an active, sociable schooling fish best kept in groups of at least six, and preferably more. Like most small rasboras it is a midwater-to-surface species that benefits from a longer tank with open swimming space in the centre and fine-leaved or feathery plantings toward the sides and back — planting creates the visual complexity that keeps a rasbora school confident and reduces stress. Gentle filtration with moderate current suits the Javan stream conditions this species inhabits in the wild.

Water parameters should reflect warm Javan lowland conditions: temperatures of approximately 72–81 °F, a pH in the neutral to slightly acidic range (6.5–7.5), and soft-to-moderate hardness. The species is peaceful and community-compatible with other small, non-aggressive fishes — similar-sized rasboras, small danios, small tetras and compatible bottom dwellers are all appropriate tankmates. It is not suitable for tanks with large or predatory inhabitants.

The red lateral stripe is best displayed under moderate, warm lighting, particularly against a dark substrate and backdrop. Regular partial water changes and stable, clean water are the main husbandry requirements. The species is not widely available in the hobby — it is less commonly kept than the large popular Rasbora (such as R. trilineata or R. borapetensis) — and most specimens encountered are wild-caught imports from Java rather than commercially raised fish.

Conservation

Rasbora aprotaenia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 25 November 2018 (assessment ID 118639688). The species is considered to have sufficient range and population size within northern and western Java that it does not currently meet the threshold for a threatened category, and FishBase rates its population resilience as high.

Nevertheless, Java is one of the most densely populated islands on Earth, and freshwater biodiversity in the western and northern lowlands faces serious and ongoing pressures: agricultural expansion, urban and industrial water extraction, river channelisation, sedimentation from land clearance, and pollution from agricultural runoff and domestic waste. The DNA barcode research confirming R. aprotaenia's distribution on Java was conducted in the context of freshwater biodiversity conservation, underscoring the scientific concern for Javan stream fauna as a whole. While the species is currently not considered at risk, endemic Javan cyprinids with restricted ranges deserve monitoring as land-use intensification continues across the island.
