Rasbora argyrotaenia, the silver rasbora, is a slender, fast-moving cyprinid that ranges across an enormous swathe of Southeast Asia — from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of mainland Indochina south through the Malay Peninsula and across the Sundaland islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java. It is among the most widespread members of the genus Rasbora, its silvery flanks and streamlined build marking it as a product of the region's warm, often slightly acidic rivers and streams. Reaching around 5.5 in total length, it is considerably larger than the diminutive rasboras familiar from the hobby, and it is kept both as an ornamental fish and harvested in modest quantities as a food fish in parts of its native range.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora argyrotaenia was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1849, with Java given as the type locality. The species epithet is from the Greek argyros (silver) and tainia (band or ribbon), referring to the bright lateral silver stripe that runs the length of the flank. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora argyrotaenia (Bleeker, 1849), with the parenthetical authority indicating the original description was under a different genus.

The genus Rasbora has undergone substantial reorganisation since the late twentieth century. Kottelat and Witte (1999) erected several segregate genera, and subsequent revisions carved out Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Rasboroides and others from what was a broadly defined Rasbora. Rasbora argyrotaenia itself, however, remains in the core of the genus under current taxonomy; it has not been transferred to one of the satellite genera. The silver rasbora should not be confused with the superficially similar but much smaller jewel rasboras and other species sometimes labelled 'silver rasbora' in the trade.

Morphology

Rasbora argyrotaenia is a slim, moderately elongate cyprinid. FishBase records a maximum total length of 5.5 in, making it a substantially larger fish than the more commonly kept dwarf rasboras; wild specimens from the Barito watershed of Borneo have been documented at 1.5–2.5 in SL and 2–3 in TL in typical shoaling populations, suggesting considerable intraspecific or regional size variation. The body is laterally compressed and streamlined, with a pointed snout and terminal to slightly upturned mouth.

The most striking feature is the lateral silver stripe — a bright, mirror-like band running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle — from which both the scientific name and the common name silver rasbora derive. The dorsum is olive to pale brownish-gold, and the flanks and belly are silvery white. The fins are largely hyaline. The combination of large size, streamlined form, and prominent silver lateral stripe readily separates R. argyrotaenia from the smaller, deeper-bodied rasboras with which it may co-occur.

Habitat

Rasbora argyrotaenia occupies tropical freshwater streams, rivers and their tributaries across a wide range encompassing the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of Thailand and mainland Southeast Asia, the Mae Klong basin, the Malay Peninsula, and the Sundaland islands of Borneo, Sumatra and Java. It is a fish of the lowland and foothill zone, found in both larger river channels and their smaller, shaded tributary streams.

Field data from the Barito watershed document the species living under warm, slightly acidic conditions: water temperatures in the range of 78–89 °F and pH values of 4.23–6.74, with dissolved oxygen between 4.2 and 7.5 mg/L. These are typical tropical-lowland stream conditions, somewhat soft and tending toward the acidic side of neutral — a reflection of the region's geology and organic inputs from forest soils and leaf litter. The species is benthopelagic and strongly schooling in habit, moving through the water column in groups above substrates of sand, gravel and leaf litter.

Feeding

Rasbora argyrotaenia is an omnivorous opportunist, as is characteristic of the genus. In its native waters it feeds on small invertebrates including aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms, supplemented with algae, plant fragments and organic detritus. Its terminal to slightly upturned mouth and active, schooling habits make it a mid-water to near-surface feeder, taking food as it drifts through the current or falls from overhanging vegetation.

In the aquarium or pond setting it is thoroughly undemanding and accepts all standard prepared foods — quality flakes and small pellets — alongside live and frozen items such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp. Because of its larger body size relative to the dwarf rasboras, it can take correspondingly larger food items and competes effectively at feeding time.

Mating

Rasbora argyrotaenia is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Reproductive studies document year-round batch spawning activity in Southeast Asian populations, consistent with the stable warm temperatures and continuous productivity of the tropical lowland environment. A mature female can carry multiple egg batches at different stages of development, releasing clutches repeatedly throughout the year rather than in a single seasonal event.

Courtship follows the typical rasbora pattern: a receptive male pursues a gravid female closely, nudging and pressing alongside her through vegetation or open water until the pair releases eggs and milt together. There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no territory. The eggs, once released, receive no further attention from either parent.

Breeding

Like other members of the genus, Rasbora argyrotaenia scatters adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, submerged moss, roots and gravel substrate, with the adults taking no further interest in the spawn — and readily eating eggs they encounter. The species is documented as a batch spawner with year-round activity (Kahar et al. 2024), meaning that in a well-maintained aquarium with stable warm water it may spawn with only modest conditioning.

For deliberate breeding, a separate shallow spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or a mesh over the bottom allows the scattered eggs to fall beyond the parents' reach. A water change with slightly warmer fresh water can trigger spawning activity. The eggs hatch within two to three days under tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming shortly afterward, initially feeding on infusoria and later accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth rate data from wild populations suggest reasonably rapid development.

In the aquarium

Rasbora argyrotaenia is encountered in the ornamental trade less frequently than the smaller, more intensely coloured rasboras, but it is maintained by enthusiasts of larger cyprinids and in public aquaria. Its size — up to 5.5 in — means it needs a spacious tank: a 120-cm or longer aquarium is appropriate for a group. Like all rasboras it is a social species and should be kept in a shoal of at least six individuals; solitary specimens become stressed and retiring.

Water conditions should reflect the species' wild environment: warm (79–86 °F), soft to moderately hard, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH around 5.5–7.0). The tank benefits from good filtration and moderate current. Compatible tankmates are other robust, active Southeast Asian fishes of similar size. The species is peaceful toward heterospecifics but may outcompete very small or slow-feeding tankmates. It is undemanding in feeding and does not damage plants.

Conservation

Rasbora argyrotaenia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (Torres & Lumbantobing, 2021). The species is noted as widespread and common throughout its extensive range across mainland Southeast Asia and Sundaland, with no evidence of significant population decline. Its broad tolerance of different water conditions and large native range provide resilience against localised threats.

General pressures on its lowland freshwater habitats — deforestation, agriculture-driven sedimentation, water extraction and pollution — apply across its range and may affect local population densities, but the species' wide distribution means these are not considered to constitute a range-wide threat at present. The silver rasbora is also harvested as a minor food fish in parts of its native range, though this has not been identified as a significant conservation concern given its abundance.
