Sundadanio gargula is a minute blackwater cyprinid from the peat-swamp forests of Bangka Island, off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia — one of the smallest members of the micro danio radiation from the Sundaland region and a fish whose entire world is bounded by waterlogged, tannin-dark forests under intense pressure from drainage and land conversion. Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, it occupies some of the most threatened freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia: extremely soft, highly acidic coastal peat streams where the water is essentially mineral-free and coloured deep amber by centuries of decomposing plant matter. Barely reaching 0.5 in in standard length, S. gargula is among the most delicate of aquarium fishes, demanding near-perfect replication of its blackwater chemistry to thrive.

Taxonomy & naming

Sundadanio gargula was described by Conway, Kottelat and Tan in 2011 as part of a taxonomic review of the Southeast Asian miniature cyprinid genus Sundadanio. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Sundadanio gargula Conway, Kottelat & Tan, 2011 — the authority is unparenthesised because the species was described directly in Sundadanio.

The genus Sundadanio belongs to the micro danio radiation endemic to the Sunda region of Southeast Asia — the ancient continental shelf land mass encompassing Sumatra, Borneo, Java and adjacent islands, now partly submerged. Classic taxonomy placed these tiny fishes in family Cyprinidae, but modern cladistics recognises them in a separate family, Sundadanionidae, reflecting their early divergence from the main cyprinid lineage. The 2011 monograph by Conway, Kottelat and Tan revised the genus and described seven new species from Indonesia and Malaysia, of which S. gargula is one.

The species name gargula is derived from onomatopoeia for boiling or gurgling water, combined with the Latin gula (throat), together referencing the tuberculate (bump-studded) head and throat of breeding males — a distinctive feature used to distinguish sexes and species within Sundadanio.

Morphology

Sundadanio gargula is a miniature fish, reaching a maximum of 0.5 in standard length (SL) — placing it firmly among the smallest vertebrates kept in the aquarium hobby. The body is laterally compressed and slender, with the proportions typical of the genus: a relatively large eye, small upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-column feeding, and a streamlined form adapted to life in slow, dimly lit peat waters.

The meristic formula recorded for the species includes 9 dorsal soft rays, 9 anal soft rays and 34 vertebrae, counts consistent with congeners. Like other Sundadanio, breeding males develop nuptial tubercles on the head and throat — the gargula name directly references these structures. Coloration in life is characteristic of the genus: small, jewel-like fishes with iridescent lateral spotting or striping that catches light in the dark water of their peat-swamp habitat. Sexual dimorphism is present: males are slimmer and develop the prominent head tubercles at breeding condition; females are deeper-bodied and rounder when gravid.

Habitat

Sundadanio gargula is endemic to Bangka Island, situated off the south-eastern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Its habitat is coastal peat-swamp forest — a specialised ecosystem in which thick accumulations of partially decomposed plant material create highly acidic, mineral-poor, tannin-saturated water. These peat-swamp streams are slow-moving to near-stagnant, shaded by dense forest canopy, and coloured amber to near-black by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leaching from the surrounding peat.

The water chemistry of these systems is extreme by the standards of most freshwater habitats: pH around 4.8 or below, negligible hardness (GH and KH both effectively 0–1, electrical conductivity approaching 0 µS/cm), and temperatures typically in the range of 73–79 °F for Sundadanio-occupied Sundaland sites. This is among the most chemically hostile freshwater habitat on Earth for fish that have not evolved specifically to exploit it — but Sundadanio gargula is precisely such a specialist.

The combination of extreme acidity, near-zero mineralisation and dense forest shade means S. gargula has virtually no capacity to tolerate the water conditions found in most aquaria or even in the adjacent open-country streams of Bangka. Its ecological range is defined by the peat swamp itself.

Feeding

Like its congeners, Sundadanio gargula is a micro-predator and opportunistic omnivore in the wild. In the extremely food-poor environment of peat-swamp blackwater, these fish subsist on tiny invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton and small worms — taken from the water column and the surface film, supplemented by whatever organic detritus and algal material is available.

In the aquarium, very small live or frozen foods are strongly recommended: newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), micro-worms, vinegar eels, Daphnia moina and similar items suited to a fish whose mouth gape is measured in fractions of a millimetre. Standard flake foods are often too large and may be ignored; finely powdered micro-pellets can supplement live foods once the fish have settled. The species does best when fed little and often in a well-established, microbe-rich tank.

Mating

Sundadanio gargula is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental investment beyond the act of spawning. As in other micro danios, a conditioned male in breeding dress — displaying the nuptial tubercles that give the species its name — courts a gravid female with close pursuit through vegetation and root tangles. The pair presses briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously, typically among fine-leaved plants, roots or the debris of the peat-swamp floor.

There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no guarding behaviour. Adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, so spawning density and the presence of fine-leaved refuge plants or spawning mops in a captive setup help reduce egg predation. Nuptial tubercle development on males offers a clear visual cue to breeding readiness in this species.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Sundadanio gargula is a specialist undertaking, demanding close replication of the species' extreme blackwater chemistry. Success requires very soft, highly acidic water — pH in the 4.5–5.5 range, conductivity as close to 0 µS/cm as achievable with RO or rain water and peat filtration or tannin additions, and temperatures around 75–79 °F. Standard tap water, even when softened, is typically unsuitable.

Eggs are adhesive and are scattered among fine-leaved plants, java moss or spawning mops placed close to the bottom, where they fall out of the parents' reach. Because S. gargula is so small, the fry at hatching are correspondingly minute and require the finest foods available: infusoria, paramecia or commercially prepared microbe cultures before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Given the species' Vulnerable status in the wild, successful captive breeding by specialist hobbyists carries genuine conservation value, and any breeding records are worth sharing with aquarist networks and ichthyologists working on Sundaland micro-cyprinids.

In the aquarium

Sundadanio gargula is a fish for the dedicated specialist rather than the general community aquarist. Its demand for extreme blackwater conditions — pH around 4.8–5.0, near-zero hardness, tannin-stained water and low light — rules out mixed community setups using standard tap water, and its tiny size (under 1 in) means it can be outcompeted or simply lost among larger tankmates.

The ideal setup is a dedicated nano-blackwater aquarium: a small, heavily tannin-stained tank with dried leaf litter, driftwood, and fine-leaved plants such as java moss or Taxiphyllum, gentle filtration that produces minimal current, dim lighting filtered through the tannin water, and tankmates limited to other Sundaland blackwater specialists of similar size — other Sundadanio species, small Boraras, or miniature Paedocypris if available. Water changes must use RO or rain water conditioned to the correct chemistry; introducing hard or high-pH tap water in quantity can be fatal.

This is not a beginner's fish, but for those who can meet its demands, a shoal of S. gargula in a mature, leaf-littered blackwater tank is a remarkable sight — small jewels of iridescence moving through amber water, a living piece of a peat-swamp ecosystem that outside the Sundaland forests barely survives in the modern world.

Conservation

Sundadanio gargula is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published on 4 January 2019. The Vulnerable designation reflects the species' endemism to Bangka Island and the accelerating destruction of its peat-swamp forest habitat. Bangka's peat swamps and freshwater wetlands have been drained, burned, converted to oil-palm plantations and degraded by tin mining — pressures that have reduced the island's natural peat-forest cover dramatically over the past several decades.

Peat-swamp freshwater habitat is particularly fragile: once the peat drains or burns, the extreme chemistry that defines it — the acidity, the near-zero mineralisation, the tannin staining — collapses and is replaced by ordinary mineral-rich water that the specialist peat-swamp fauna cannot tolerate. For an endemic species restricted to a single island's coastal peat systems, there is no refugium elsewhere, no reservoir population in adjacent undisturbed habitat. Any further reduction in Bangka's peat-swamp extent translates directly into population loss for S. gargula.

The species may also be subject to low-level collection pressure for the specialist aquarium trade, though demand for extreme-blackwater micro-cyprinids remains limited. Conservation depends primarily on habitat protection — maintaining intact peat-swamp forests on Bangka — and on any captive population that specialist hobbyists can sustain.
