Sundadanio retiarius is a diminutive peat-swamp cyprinid from the blackwater river drainages of Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo — one of the smallest members of a genus built for life in soft, tannin-stained lowland waters. At barely 0.5 in standard length it ranks among the tiniest vertebrates kept in the aquarium hobby, yet its intensity of colour — males flushed vivid red when excited — makes it a captivating fish for the patient keeper willing to meet its exacting water-chemistry requirements. Described in a 2011 monographic review of the genus Sundadanio, it is known only from the Kotawaringin and Kahayan River drainages and faces the same long-term threat confronting Sundaland's peat-swamp fauna: the progressive drainage and conversion of its specialised habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Sundadanio retiarius was described by Kevin W. Conway, Maurice Kottelat and Heok Hui Tan in 2011, as part of a monographic review of the miniature Southeast Asian cyprinid genus Sundadanio (family Cyprinidae, order Ostariophysi). That review, published in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, assessed and re-described the genus as a whole and erected several new species alongside Sundadanio retiarius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name, and records the current combination as Sundadanio retiarius Conway, Kottelat & Tan, 2011.

Sundadanio is a small genus of Sundaland micro-cyprinids allied to the broader danio lineage. The genus was erected partly to accommodate diminutive, blackwater-specialist minnows from Sumatra and Borneo whose morphology and ecology set them apart from the larger, more generalised Danio and Devario. The species epithet retiarius is Latin for 'net-fighter' (the gladiator armed with a net and trident), a reference to the intricate reticulate or net-like colour patterning seen on the flanks.

Morphology

Sundadanio retiarius is one of the smallest fishes in the genus, reaching a maximum of 0.5 in standard length — a size that places it at the absolute lower end of vertebrate body size. The body is laterally compressed and slender, with a small, upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding on tiny invertebrates. Like other Sundadanio, the species lacks the prominent barbels typical of many cyprinids.

The colour pattern gives the species its name: the flanks display a reticulate or net-like arrangement of dark pigment overlying a pale to coppery ground, distinguishing it from the more uniform lateral banding of some congeners. Males intensify dramatically in colour when excited or conditioned for breeding, flushing vivid red or orange-red over much of the body — a display that makes them conspicuous despite their tiny size. Females are typically plumper and less intensely coloured. The extent of sexual dimorphism in colour intensity is marked and reliable for sexing conditioned adults.

Habitat

Sundadanio retiarius is endemic to Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) and is known from the Kotawaringin and Kahayan River drainages. Both systems drain into the Java Sea from the south Kalimantan lowlands and include extensive areas of peat-swamp forest — the characteristic habitat of Sundadanio across its Sundaland range.

Peat-swamp streams in this region are extreme environments by the standards of most cyprinids: the water is stained dark amber to near-black by tannins and humic acids leaching from decomposing peat and leaf litter, with conductivity approaching zero, pH often below 5.0, and temperatures fluctuating with the shallow, sun-exposed nature of the habitat. These blackwater conditions are essential to the species' health in captivity. The streams themselves are typically slow-moving to still, with dense marginal and overhanging vegetation, submerged leaf litter, and a soft, dark substrate.

Feeding

Sundadanio retiarius is a micropredator and opportunistic omnivore in the wild, feeding on the small invertebrates, zooplankton, and organic particles available in its peat-swamp habitat. Its upturned mouth and small size suggest a fish that exploits the surface film and the upper water column, picking off tiny insects, larvae, and crustaceans.

In the aquarium the species accepts a range of small prepared foods including micro-pellets and finely crushed flakes, but thrives best when live and frozen foods form a significant part of the diet. Suitably sized live foods — baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, daphnia, and infusoria — are ideal for conditioning adults and growing on fry. Because of its tiny mouth, food particle size is critical; standard community flakes are often too large for comfortable feeding.

Mating

Like all members of the danio lineage, Sundadanio retiarius is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. Males become territorial and display intensely toward one another and toward females when in breeding condition, flushing to vivid red and chasing rivals through vegetation.

Courtship takes the form of persistent male pursuit of gravid females through the dense plant cover of the habitat — or its aquarium equivalent. When a receptive female accepts a male's pursuit, the pair press together briefly among fine-leaved plants or moss and release eggs and milt simultaneously. The eggs scatter among the vegetation or onto the substrate, and both adults ignore them thereafter.

Breeding

Breeding Sundadanio retiarius follows the egg-scattering pattern shared across the danio lineage, with no parental care of any kind. Because adults will eat their own eggs given the opportunity, successful breeding requires either dense planting that provides physical refuge for the scattered eggs or removal of the adults after spawning. Fine-leaved plants, Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops placed across the bottom and mid-water provide suitable spawning sites and egg protection.

A small, dedicated breeding tank — even one as modest as 3 US gal — can produce results, though a slightly larger vessel of around 10 US gal is better suited to long-term colony maintenance. Water chemistry must reflect the species' peat-swamp origin: soft, acidic water with pH in the range of 6.0–7.0 and temperature between 22 and 82 °F (72–82 °F) is recommended; blackwater conditions with a tannin source (dried leaves, peat filtration, or alder cones) significantly improve both health and breeding readiness. Eggs and fry are extremely small and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before progressing to baby brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Sundadanio retiarius is a specialist fish for the experienced hobbyist willing to tailor its environment to its blackwater origins. A minimum tank volume of around 10 US gal is workable, but the species benefits from a longer, well-planted aquarium. Groups of eight or more are strongly recommended: in smaller numbers the fish are shy and may fail to colour up; in a confident group the males' competitive colour displays are the main attraction of the species.

Water chemistry is non-negotiable. The species requires soft, acidic, tannin-stained water — pH 6.0–7.0, very low conductivity, temperature 72–82 °F — mimicking the peat-swamp conditions of Kalimantan. Tap water with significant hardness or alkalinity must be treated before use, and acclimation to new chemistry should be slow and careful. Tankmates should be chosen from species with compatible water-quality requirements and similarly small, peaceful dispositions. Despite demanding conditions, a well-maintained Sundadanio retiarius group provides exceptional colour spectacle for so tiny a fish.

Conservation

Sundadanio retiarius is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). The evaluation acknowledges the species' restricted range within Kalimantan's peat-swamp systems but judges the current population as not meeting thresholds for a threatened category.

The long-term outlook for peat-swamp fishes across Sundaland is, however, genuinely precarious. The lowland peat-swamp forests of Kalimantan have been subject to large-scale drainage, clearing, and conversion to oil-palm and other plantation agriculture — a process that destroys the hydrological integrity of the blackwater draining systems these fish depend upon. Fire, peat oxidation, and the alteration of water chemistry following forest clearance eliminate the acid, humic-rich conditions that Sundadanio and its relatives require. The species' endemism to a small set of river drainages in south Kalimantan means that regional habitat loss could be consequential even if the current assessment remains Least Concern.
