Sundadanio axelrodi is one of the world's smallest fishes — a glittering, barely two-centimetre cyprinid of the ancient peat swamps of Borneo and Sumatra, where it drifts in slow, tannin-brown pools beneath a forest canopy that has been draining away for decades. Males blaze with iridophore-caught blue and red in the dark water, making the species one of the most striking of all micro cyprinids; in the aquarium it is also one of the most demanding, insisting on soft, steeply acidic blackwater conditions that most community tanks cannot provide. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, a direct consequence of the catastrophic loss of lowland peat-swamp forest across Sundaland.

Taxonomy & naming

Sundadanio axelrodi was described by Martin R. Brittan in 1976 from material collected in Borneo, originally placed in the large wastebasket genus Rasbora as Rasbora axelrodi. The species stood alone in Rasbora for over two decades until Kottelat and Witte (1999) recognised that it was sufficiently distinct — in its minute size, body proportions and colouration — to warrant its own monotypic genus, Sundadanio, named for the Sundaland biogeographic region that it inhabits. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) recognises the current valid combination as Sundadanio axelrodi (Brittan, 1976), the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from Rasbora.

Sundadanio is therefore a genus of one: axelrodi is its only member. The species has been traded under the names 'blue neon rasbora' and 'Axelrod's rasbora', both reflecting its former placement in Rasbora and honouring Herbert R. Axelrod, the hobbyist-publisher after whom Brittan named it. Despite the common names, it is now firmly established as a danionin cyprinid outside Rasbora, closely allied to the micro danio lineage rather than to the true rasboras. The species has not been split into geographic forms, though Borneo (Sarawak, Kalimantan) and Sumatra populations exist and may show slight colour differences.

Morphology

Sundadanio axelrodi is an extraordinarily small fish, reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length (FishBase); most wild adults measure around 1 in SL, and the IUCN assessment notes a maximum closer to 0.5 in in some accounts. The body is deep relative to its length by micro-cyprinid standards, laterally compressed, with a small upturned mouth suited to picking invertebrates from the water column and surface. It is a benthopelagic species despite its diminutive frame.

The colouration is the species' defining feature. Males carry a dense complement of melanophores, erythrophores (red-orange pigment cells) and iridophores (structural reflective cells), which together produce an iridescent blue-green sheen along the midlateral flank with flashes of red or copper, particularly vivid under dim, tannin-filtered light that approximates the peat-swamp conditions in which it evolved. Females are less intensely coloured, with fewer erythrophores and iridophores, appearing more plainly silvery with a subdued lateral glint. This sexual dichromatism is clear and can be used to sex adults in good condition. The fins are small and hyaline.

Habitat

Sundadanio axelrodi is a Sundaland endemic, native to the lowland peat-swamp forests of Borneo (Sarawak and Kalimantan) and Sumatra, with records also from the island of Bangka off Sumatra's eastern coast. These ancient peat swamps are among the most chemically extreme freshwater habitats on Earth: the water is tea-coloured or near-black from dissolved tannins and humic acids leaching out of accumulated organic matter, the substrate is deep peat and leaf litter, light penetration is low, and the chemistry is defined by almost complete demineralisation.

Water conditions recorded from type and field localities are strictly soft and acidic: pH 4.0–6.5, with values below 6.0 considered ideal for the species; hardness 0–5 °dH; temperature 73–79 °F year-round beneath the closed forest canopy. The fish inhabits slow forest streams and shallow pools within the swamp, rarely in flowing water. Dissolved oxygen is lower than in most tropical streams, and the peat-swamp chemistry — absent carbonate buffering — means pH is extremely stable at low values but crashes quickly if the habitat is disturbed. The species is never found in open, agricultural or degraded water.

Feeding

In the wild, Sundadanio axelrodi feeds primarily on small aquatic crustaceans and zooplankton, picking selectively through the water column at the scale its tiny mouth demands. The dim, particulate-rich waters of peat swamps support dense microfaunal communities, and the species appears to be a visual, selective micropredator in that environment rather than an indiscriminate filter-feeder.

In captivity it is reported to feed selectively and can be reluctant to accept dry foods. The best results come from live or frozen Artemia nauplii (newly hatched brine shrimp), Daphnia, and micro-bloodworm (chironomid larvae frozen at small size). Condition, reproductive activity and colour intensity all improve markedly with regular live or high-quality frozen food. The species' small mouth size must be borne in mind when selecting food particle size — standard flake is too large for comfortable ingestion.

Mating

Sundadanio axelrodi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like other danionin cyprinids, it produces no nest, constructs no territory, and performs no parental defence of eggs or fry. Courtship takes the form of driving: a male in breeding colouration pursues a gravid female closely through fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, with both fish releasing eggs and milt simultaneously in brief, pressing bursts. There is no pair bond beyond these fleeting spawning contacts.

The eggs are adhesive and fall among plant leaves, moss, or the peat-and-leaf-litter substrate, where they are hidden from the adults. Left in the same tank, adults will consume any eggs they encounter. The species is rarely observed spawning in captivity and does so only when water conditions are precise — acidic, very soft, warm, and well-established — suggesting that chemical and microbial cues from mature, aged blackwater may play a role in triggering reproductive readiness.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Sundadanio axelrodi is rarely achieved and is considered a significant accomplishment among micro-cyprinid enthusiasts. The precondition is an established, mature tank with stable pH below 6.0, very soft water (0–5 °dH), temperature 75–79 °F, and the presence of fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, or Java moss that provides egg-catching surfaces. Biological filtration must be gentle — the species will not breed in heavily filtered or hard water — and the tank benefits from the addition of dried peat or Indian almond leaves to achieve genuine blackwater chemistry and the associated microfaunal populations.

When conditions are met, fry may appear without the keeper having directly observed spawning, suggesting the fish spawn over extended periods rather than in single dramatic events. The fry are minute and require infusoria or paramecia as a first food; vinegar eels and newly hatched Artemia nauplii can follow as the fry grow. The rarity of captive breeding and the difficulty of raising fry mean that most trade specimens are still wild-caught, adding to the conservation pressure on natural populations.

In the aquarium

Sundadanio axelrodi is a species for the specialist rather than the general community hobbyist. Its absolute requirement for soft, acidic blackwater (pH 4.0–6.5, hardness near zero) rules out most community setups, and it will not thrive — let alone breed — in the neutral, moderately hard water that suits the majority of tropical fishes. The ideal aquarium is a dedicated blackwater nano or species tank: a smaller vessel (10–20 US gal is ample for a group), heavily planted with fine-leaved species, floored with dark substrate or peat, and tinted with leaf litter and driftwood. Lighting should be subdued; the fish's iridescent colouration is best appreciated under dimmer conditions that simulate peat-swamp light.

The species must be kept in groups — a minimum of eight to twelve individuals is recommended to produce the schooling behaviour and inter-male display that show off the colouration at its best. It is peaceable and fragile: tankmates, if any, should be restricted to other Sundaland blackwater species of comparable tiny size (Boraras species, Parosphromenus, small Betta species in appropriate setups). It should never be housed with larger or boisterous fish. Feeding must be attentive: live or frozen micro-foods presented daily maintain condition, as the species tends to decline on dry food alone. With proper care it is a rewarding and spectacular fish, but it demands the keeper meet it on its own chemical terms.

Conservation

Sundadanio axelrodi is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (Lumbantobing, 2019). The assessment reflects the accelerating destruction of the lowland peat-swamp forests of Borneo and Sumatra, which are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. Large-scale draining and burning of peat swamps for palm oil and pulpwood plantations has eliminated vast areas of the species' habitat across Kalimantan and Sumatra over the past three decades; the remaining swamp forest is fragmented, with continuing pressure from agricultural expansion, drainage canals that lower water tables across entire peat domes, fire, and peat oxidation.

The species' extreme chemical specialisation — an obligate dependence on intact, undisturbed blackwater — means it cannot persist in degraded or converted habitats. It is absent from ditches, agricultural drains, and secondary waterways, even where these physically adjoin peat-swamp remnants. Collection for the aquarium trade adds a secondary pressure on accessible populations. No formal conservation actions specific to this species are known, and its survival is largely contingent on the protection of intact peat-swamp forest blocks, which remain under severe and ongoing threat across Sundaland.
