Taxonomy & naming
Trigonopoma gracile was first described by Maurice Kottelat in 1991 as Rasbora gracilis, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (vol. 2, no. 2: 177–191), on the basis of specimens from the Sundaland lowlands. The species epithet gracile (or gracilis in the original feminine form) is Latin for 'slender' or 'graceful', a reference to the fish's trim, elongate build.
The genus Rasbora as historically constituted was a sprawling assemblage that taxonomic work over the late 20th and early 21st centuries has progressively dismembered. Kottelat and Witte (1999) and subsequent authors erected or resurrected several segregate genera — among them Trigonopoma — to accommodate species that clustered away from the core Rasbora lineage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid current combination as Trigonopoma gracile (Kottelat, 1991). The GBIF backbone also accepts Trigonopoma gracile as the valid name. Hobbyist literature may still occasionally list this fish under Rasbora gracilis; that name is now a junior synonym.
Trigonopoma is a small genus of peat-swamp and blackwater rasboras restricted to Sundaland. Its closest relatives include Trigonopoma pauciperforatum (the red-line rasbora) and a handful of other slim, softwater specialists from the same habitat type.
Morphology
Trigonopoma gracile is a slender, laterally compressed cyprinid with a pointed snout and a small, slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and midwater feeding. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2 in, with most aquarium specimens in the 2 in range — small enough to be considered a nano-community fish.
The body is pale straw to silvery, with a delicate dark lateral stripe running from behind the eye to the caudal peduncle; the stripe may be accompanied by a thin gold or copper line above it in good light. The fins are largely colourless. Coloration is understated compared to many rasboras, giving the fish the quiet elegance that its name suggests. The overall impression in a school is of a group of slim, glinting needles moving in unison through dark water.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Females are generally deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdominal region when gravid; males are marginally slimmer. No elaborate secondary sexual characters are reported.
Habitat
The graceful rasbora is a specialist of Sundaland's lowland freshwater habitats: ancient peat-swamp forests and the slow, tannin-rich blackwater streams that drain them, as well as associated stillwaters and forest pools. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic and records its native distribution across Peninsular Malaysia (including Singapore), Sumatra and Borneo — a range tightly mapped onto the Sundaic peat-swamp belt.
Peat-swamp water is highly distinctive: the decomposing leaf litter and peat leach humic and fulvic acids that drop pH to very low levels and stain the water the colour of strong tea. The result is soft, acidic, tannin-stained water with negligible mineral content. Seriously Fish records the species' water parameters as 70–79 °F, pH 4.0–7.0, and hardness 0–179 ppm — a very soft, warm acidic profile that reflects these conditions. In practice, wild habitat water is often at or below pH 5. The fish favour areas with overhanging or submerged vegetation, leaf litter on the bottom, and diffuse, dim light filtered through a forest canopy.
Singapore populations have been severely affected by urban development; the species persists in remaining forest patches on the peninsula but is increasingly associated with degraded or fragmented habitat.
Feeding
Trigonopoma gracile is a micropredator. In the wild it takes small invertebrates available in and around the water column: tiny insects (including surface-fallen terrestrial insects), small aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms. Its slightly upturned mouth is well adapted to picking items from the surface film as well as the midwater.
In the aquarium, Seriously Fish recommends a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp (Artemia) — supplemented with quality micro-pellets or fine flakes. Like many specialist blackwater fishes, it may initially be reluctant to accept dry foods; conditioning on live and frozen items first usually brings it around. Feeding several small portions through the day suits its midwater, active foraging style.
Mating
Trigonopoma gracile is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the standard reproductive strategy across the danio and rasbora lineages. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding and no parental care of any kind. Spawning involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or among roots, with eggs and milt released together in a brief side-by-side contact.
The eggs are adhesive and fall into fine-leaved plants, moss, roots or settle on the substrate below. Adults pay no attention to the eggs after spawning and will consume them if given the opportunity. In aquarium conditions a school of well-conditioned fish will spawn periodically, but separating adults from eggs is necessary if fry are to be raised. The spawning stimulus in the wild is likely tied to seasonal rainfall and temperature shifts, as is typical of Sundaland lowland fishes.
Breeding
Breeding Trigonopoma gracile in the aquarium requires faithful replication of its soft, acidic, peat-swamp water conditions — this is not a fish that will spawn in hard tap water. A dedicated breeding tank with RO or similarly soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.5, temperature around 75–79 °F, very low hardness) tinted with botanicals or peat filtration gives the best results. Fine-leaved plants such as java moss or spawning mops provide egg-deposition sites.
Eggs are adhesive and scattered among the plants; a mesh or dense bottom planting helps protect eggs from the adults, which should be removed once spawning is complete. The eggs are small and vulnerable to fungus in anything other than pristine, soft water. Hatchlings are tiny and require infusoria or commercially produced microfeeds initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Growth is relatively slow compared to the more generalist danios. No parental care is given at any stage.
In the aquarium
The graceful rasbora is best suited to a specialist blackwater aquarium that mimics its peat-swamp origin. Very soft, acidic water — ideally RO water reconstituted with a small amount of mineral content, tinted with catappa leaves, peat or driftwood — is the non-negotiable foundation. In hard or alkaline tap water the fish will be dull, stressed and prone to disease. Temperature of 70–79 °F suits it well.
Seriously Fish recommends keeping this species in schools of eight or more; like most small rasboras it is a midwater schooling fish that draws confidence from numbers and displays its most natural behaviour in a group. It is peaceful and best housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates that share its need for soft, acidic conditions — other peat-swamp specialists such as small Boraras, Sphaerichthys or nano catfish are natural companions. Avoid robust or boisterous species that will outcompete it at feeding. Dim lighting, a dark substrate and a layer of floating plants to diffuse light will show the fish at its best and encourage natural behaviour.
It is an uncommon species in the trade, typically available only through specialist importers or hobbyist breeders. Its fastidious water requirements make it unsuitable as a beginner fish, but for the dedicated blackwater aquarist it is a rewarding, quietly beautiful species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Trigonopoma gracile as Least Concern (LC), citing its relatively wide distribution across Sundaland, high resilience and low vulnerability to targeted fishing. FishBase corroborates the LC status.
The assessment must be read alongside the trajectory of the peat-swamp ecosystem on which the species depends. Sundaland's lowland peat-swamp forests are among the most threatened habitats on earth: drainage for palm oil and acacia plantations, agricultural conversion, peat fires and urban expansion have eliminated or severely degraded large portions of the original habitat across Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo over recent decades. Singapore's peat-swamp fish fauna is largely gone from the city-state's urban landscape. The species' wide distribution provides a buffer, but continued habitat loss — especially the ongoing conversion of remaining lowland forest — poses a credible long-term threat to populations throughout the range. Any future reassessment under a worsening trajectory could shift the species into a threatened category.
