Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora elegans was described by the German zoologist Walter Volz in 1903 from material collected in the Malay Peninsula. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora elegans Volz, 1903, and this placement has remained stable. No synonyms are currently listed and no subspecies are recognised.
The genus Rasbora has undergone significant revision since the early 2000s. Kottelat and Witte (1999) erected several new genera — Trigonostigma, Microrasbora, Boraras, Trigonopoma and others — to accommodate smaller or morphologically distinct species that had been loosely placed in Rasbora. Rasbora elegans belongs to the core Rasbora sensu stricto group and retains its original genus assignment. It is related to other large, two-spot or multi-spot rasboras of the Sundaland region such as Rasbora cephalotaenia and Rasbora dorsiocellata.
The specific epithet elegans is Latin for 'elegant' or 'graceful', alluding to the sleek form and refined patterning of the fish. The common names 'two-spot rasbora' and 'elegant rasbora' are both in trade use; 'twospot rasbora' appears on some care guides and trade lists.
Morphology
Rasbora elegans is a large, elongate, moderately compressed cyprinid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 8 in, though most individuals in the aquarium reach 4.5–6 in. The body is silvery, with a faint gold or copper iridescence along the flanks in good light. The back is somewhat darker — olive to brownish — and the underside is pale.
The diagnostic pattern consists of two dark, well-defined blotches: the first, sometimes described as a shoulder spot, lies behind the operculum on the anterior flank; the second, larger blotch marks the caudal peduncle at the base of the tail fin. A faint lateral stripe may connect or partly connect these spots, and the extent and contrast of the markings can vary with water chemistry, condition and age. The fins are clear to faintly yellowish.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Females are deeper-bodied and noticeably rounder in the abdomen when gravid. Males are slimmer and may show a slightly more vivid coppery lateral sheen during courtship. Both sexes have a pair of short maxillary barbels, typical of the genus.
Habitat
Rasbora elegans is native to Sundaland — the Malay Peninsula (including states such as Johor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Kelantan), Singapore, Borneo (Kalimantan) and Sumatra (including Nias Island). It inhabits a variety of lowland freshwater environments: clear forest streams with rocky or sandy substrates, slower peat-swamp channels stained amber-brown with dissolved tannins, and the marginal pools of larger rivers.
Water chemistry varies considerably across its range. In clearer forest streams, pH commonly falls between 6.5 and 7.5 with moderate hardness. In blackwater peat-swamp habitats — which dominate much of lowland Sundaland — the water is extremely soft and acidic, with pH values as low as 4.0–6.0, negligible buffering capacity, and heavy tannin staining that reduces light penetration dramatically. Temperatures across the lowland range typically fall between 22 and 77 °F. In the aquarium, FishBase specifies pH 6.0–6.5 and hardness up to 10 dH as preferred values, consistent with the softer, slightly acidic end of its wild range.
The species is found in the water column from mid-water to the surface and is a gregarious fish, generally encountered in groups among submerged roots, leaf litter and marginal vegetation.
Feeding
Rasbora elegans is an omnivorous opportunist and active predator of small invertebrates. Its large size relative to most rasboras means it can take correspondingly larger prey items: insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other aquatic invertebrates form the core of the wild diet, supplemented by algae, plant material and organic detritus.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to dry foods — high-quality flakes and pellets appropriate to its size — but thrives best when live and frozen invertebrates are offered regularly. Bloodworm, Daphnia, mosquito larvae and adult brine shrimp are all eagerly taken and help maintain condition and natural colouring. Its size and vigour mean it will outcompete smaller tankmates for food, so feeding larger groups requires some care to ensure all individuals are well-nourished.
Mating
Like all members of the genus Rasbora, R. elegans is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond and no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning itself. Courtship is energetic: a conditioned male pursues a gravid female through open water or among vegetation, pressing close to her flank and driving her toward plant stems or fine substrate. When the female is ready, the pair release eggs and milt in a brief, simultaneous release.
Spawning is continuous when fish are well-conditioned, rather than tied to a single seasonal event — Seriously Fish notes that a well-fed group in suitable water will spawn repeatedly. The adults show no interest in the eggs after spawning and will eat them if given the opportunity.
Breeding
Breeding Rasbora elegans follows the standard egg-scattering protocol used for many larger rasboras and danios. A separate, well-seasoned spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water — pH around 6.0–6.5, hardness 2–6 dH, temperature 75–77 °F — is set up with fine-leaved plants, java moss or spawning mops to catch scattered eggs, and a layer of marbles or mesh to protect them from the adults. A conditioned pair or small group is introduced, and spawning typically occurs in the early morning.
Eggs are adhesive to slightly adhesive and settle among plants or onto the substrate. Because adults will eat eggs and fry as soon as they encounter them, the parent fish should be removed as soon as spawning is observed. The eggs hatch in approximately two to three days at tropical temperatures; the larvae initially hang from plant surfaces and absorb the yolk sac before becoming free-swimming. First foods are infusoria or similarly fine live foods, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-worms as the fry grow. Growth to juvenile size is reasonably rapid.
In the aquarium
Rasbora elegans is a rewarding aquarium species for the committed hobbyist willing to provide the space it demands. At 4.5–6 in, and occasionally larger, it is one of the biggest fish commonly kept under the rasbora label. A minimum tank length of 47 in is widely recommended for a small group, and a longer tank of 59 in or more is preferable for allowing the fast, open-water swimming typical of the species.
It is a peaceful fish suitable for a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive Southeast Asian species — large barbs, bigger gouramis and robust loaches make compatible companions, but slow or small tankmates risk being outcompeted at feeding time or startled by the rasboras' speed. A group of six or more is strongly advisable: kept singly or in pairs the species becomes nervous and may develop fin-nipping behaviour.
Water conditions should reflect the soft, slightly acidic character of its Sundaland origins: pH 5.0–7.5 (targeting 6.0–7.0 for most conditions), hardness 2–12 dH, and temperature 72–77 °F. The addition of blackwater extract, dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves or similar) and driftwood to lower pH and release tannins is appreciated and brings out the fish's natural colouring. It benefits from good filtration and regular partial water changes, and appreciates some surface turbulence for oxygenation without strong flow.
Conservation
Rasbora elegans is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2020). The species has a broad distribution across Sundaland — encompassing Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Kalimantan and parts of Sumatra — and no range-wide population decline sufficient to qualify it for a threatened category has been documented.
Nonetheless, the ecosystems it inhabits face serious pressure. Peat-swamp forests across Sundaland have been cleared on a massive scale for palm oil and timber plantations, with associated drainage, fire and pollution radically altering or destroying the blackwater systems these fish depend on. Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Kalimantan have all lost large proportions of their original lowland peat-swamp habitat in recent decades. While R. elegans has a wide enough range that its overall status remains Least Concern, localised populations in heavily degraded drainages may have contracted significantly. Singapore, once within the species' range, has lost nearly all its original freshwater habitat. Continued monitoring and habitat protection for Sundaland's remaining forest streams and peat-swamp systems are essential safeguards for this and dozens of other endemic freshwater fishes.
