Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora kalbarensis was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1991. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora kalbarensis Kottelat, 1991, with the type locality in western Borneo, Kalimantan, Indonesia. The species epithet kalbarensis is a Latinised toponym derived from "Kalbar," the common Indonesian abbreviation for Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan), the province where the type specimens were collected.
The genus Rasbora has been substantially revised over recent decades. Several former Rasbora species have been transferred to newly erected or resurrected genera — among them Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides — in a series of revisions clarifying phylogenetic boundaries within the rasbora assemblage. Rasbora kalbarensis itself, however, has remained within Rasbora under current taxonomic treatments, and the Catalog of Fishes continues to recognise it under that placement.
Morphology
Rasbora kalbarensis is a small, slender cyprinid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1 in, placing it among the smaller species in its genus. Like most rasboras it has a streamlined, slightly laterally compressed body with a terminal mouth and the typical cyprinid body plan.
Detailed meristic and morphological descriptions in the primary literature, accessible through the GBIF taxonomic record and the type description, distinguish it from sympatric Bornean rasboras by fin-ray and scale counts as well as colouration. Field-collected individuals tend to show the pale, translucent flanks with subtle lateral patterning common in small Sundaland rasboras, though colouration is best seen in live specimens under the tannin-stained light of their native waters.
Habitat
This species is native to western Borneo, specifically the lowland forests of West Kalimantan, Indonesia. It inhabits forest streams and peat-swamp waters — the slow-moving, often tea-colored blackwaters that drain through Sundaland's lowland peat deposits and beneath dense riparian and forest canopy. These environments are characterised by extremely soft, acidic water with low dissolved mineral content and elevated levels of dissolved humic and fulvic acids from decaying plant material.
The habitat is typical of the Sundaland lowland freshwater ecoregion: shallow, gently flowing or still water over soft substrate, with submerged roots, leaf litter and marginal vegetation providing cover. Water temperatures in this zone are warm and relatively stable through the year. FishBase describes the species as benthopelagic and tropical, occurring in freshwater forest streams and clear blackwaters where it is recorded as reasonably common.
Feeding
Rasbora kalbarensis is an omnivore in the pattern typical of small stream-dwelling rasboras. In its native blackwater habitats it would take small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other zooplankton — from the water column, supplemented by surface-fallen terrestrial insects and fine organic particulates.
In the aquarium it accepts a range of small prepared foods — micro-pellets, crushed flake — alongside live and frozen offerings such as daphnia, micro-worms and baby brine shrimp. Given its very small adult size, food particle size matters; offerings should be appropriately fine to ensure the fish can ingest them effectively. Regular small feeds through the day suit its active foraging style.
Mating
Rasbora kalbarensis, like all members of the rasbora and danio assemblage, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and no parental bond forms. Spawning behaviour in this group follows a consistent pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column and among vegetation, eventually drawing alongside her as eggs and milt are released in brief simultaneous bursts.
The adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, submerged moss, root tangles or the leaf-litter substrate, where they settle without parental attention. In the soft, acidic blackwaters of Kalimantan, spawning likely responds to seasonal water-level and rainfall cues, as is common in Sundaland cyprinids. No courtship structures, territorial display or post-spawning attendance have been documented for this species.
Breeding
Breeding Rasbora kalbarensis in the aquarium follows the approach used for small Sundaland rasboras generally. A separate, well-seasoned spawning tank with very soft, acidic water — pH around 5.5–6.5 and hardness as low as possible — conditioned with blackwater extract or dried leaves to replicate peat-swamp chemistry is the usual starting point. A fine-leaved plant such as Java moss or a spawning mop provides a target for the scattered adhesive eggs and some physical protection from the adults, which will eat eggs if given access.
A conditioned group or a selected pair is introduced in the evening; spawning typically follows in the morning. Adults should be removed after spawning is complete. The eggs hatch in two to three days at tropical temperatures; larvae are initially tiny and require infusoria or other very fine first foods before graduating to baby brine shrimp as they grow. The species has a modest captive-breeding record and information on exact fecundity and larval development remains sparse in the hobby literature.
In the aquarium
Rasbora kalbarensis is an aquarium trade species but remains a specialist's fish rather than a staple of mainstream retail. Its very small adult size and requirement for soft, acidic blackwater conditions mean it is best housed in a dedicated Sundaland biotope or a carefully water-conditioned nano aquarium. Aquadiction and hobbyist sources recommend mature, densely planted tanks with a gentle flow, tannin-staining from botanicals or peat, and a dark substrate that brings out natural colouration.
Because of its small size and somewhat retiring nature, tankmates should be chosen with care: very small, equally peaceful species that share its water chemistry requirements are ideal, and larger or more boisterous fish are best avoided. It is a shoaling species that should be kept in groups — a minimum of six to eight individuals will produce natural schooling behaviour and reduce stress. Water quality must be maintained at a high standard; the species is intolerant of organic pollution or the alkaline, hard water that flows from many municipal supplies without treatment.
Conservation
Rasbora kalbarensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment date of 9 January 2019. The assessment reflects a stable population in forest stream habitats of western Borneo, where the species was considered reasonably common at the time of evaluation.
Nonetheless, the blackwater peat-swamp and forest-stream habitats of West Kalimantan are under sustained and accelerating pressure from deforestation, peat-swamp drainage for palm-oil agriculture, fire, and hydrological modification. These habitat losses have devastated the Sundaland lowland freshwater ecoregion more broadly and threaten a wide range of co-occurring fish species. While R. kalbarensis may be stable now, the long-term security of any species dependent on intact lowland Bornean peat-swamp and forest-stream ecosystems is contingent on the continued availability of those habitats — a prospect that remains genuinely uncertain across much of Kalimantan.
