Taxonomy & naming
Anguilla labiata was originally described by Wilhelm Peters in 1852 as Muraena labiata, from syntypes collected at Tete on the Zambezi River in Mozambique and from the Licuare River near Boro. The species was later transferred to the genus Anguilla, where it is retained by the World Register of Marine Species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both list it as a valid species in Anguillidae, though the IUCN's 2019 assessment treats it under the combination Anguilla bengalensis labiata, recognising it as a subspecies of the Indian mottled eel, A. bengalensis. The question of whether labiata represents a full species or a subspecies of A. bengalensis remains unresolved in the literature; this profile follows the species-level treatment adopted by WoRMS and FishBase.
The African Anguilla species — A. labiata, A. bengalensis, A. mossambica, and A. marmorata — are morphologically similar and can be difficult to distinguish without close examination or molecular data. DNA barcoding has proven essential for telling apart freshly collected specimens, and field surveys in east Africa sometimes list multiple Anguilla records as 'undetermined' where only juveniles or damaged material was available. The epithet labiata derives from the Latin labiatus (lipped), probably referring to the prominent lips of the type specimen.
This is a genuine member of the order Anguilliformes, the true eels. It is not a spiny eel (Mastacembelidae) or a swamp eel (Synbranchidae), both of which are only superficially eel-like; Anguilla labiata belongs to the same family as the European eel, the American eel, and the Japanese eel.
Morphology
As a true eel, A. labiata has the characteristic elongate, serpentine body, with continuous dorsal and anal fins that run most of the length of the animal and merge around the pointed tail. The skin is smooth and slippery, covered in tiny cycloid scales embedded deeply in the dermis and largely invisible to the naked eye. The head carries a well-developed jaw with numerous fine teeth, suited to seizing prey rather than filter-feeding, and the lips are notably fleshy — the character that gives the species its name.
Coloration in the continental growth phase (the yellow-eel stage) is typically yellowish-brown to olive on the back and sides, with an irregular mottled pattern, fading to a pale or yellowish belly. Animals approaching sexual maturity undergo a shift to the silver-eel stage: the eyes enlarge significantly (an adaptation for deep-ocean navigation), the flanks become silvery, and the belly whitens. FishBase records a maximum total length of 69 in and a maximum weight of 20.6 kg, though such dimensions represent very old fish; most individuals encountered in rivers are considerably smaller. Maximum recorded age is 15 years in the freshwater growth phase.
Habitat
During the continental growth phase, Anguilla labiata occupies freshwater and brackish coastal habitats along the east African coast and associated interior drainages. Confirmed records include the Zambezi basin (notably Lake Kariba), the Pungwe, Buzi, Save and Rhunde rivers, the Umzingwani, and the Limpopo, all in the tropical zone of east and southern Africa. The species is recorded as marine, freshwater, and brackish — a reflection of its use of estuaries and coastal lagoons as juvenile arrival and transitional zones.
In rivers, adults favour deeper pools, submerged banks, and root tangles, emerging mainly at night to forage. They tolerate a considerable range of temperature across their geographic range, from the warm tropical lowlands of the Zambezi valley to slightly cooler upland reaches, and they appear at least occasionally in lentic habitats such as Lake Kariba. Like most Anguilla, they are burrowers and hide during the day in the substrate or among submerged structure, leaving them seldom seen by day-active observers despite sometimes being locally common.
Feeding
FishBase records the adult diet of Anguilla labiata as crabs, frogs, insects, and fish — a broad carnivore diet typical of large Anguilla species. The fleshy jaws and muscular body allow the eel to overpower prey considerably larger than would be expected from an invertebrate specialist, and large adults are capable of taking substantial fish.
Like all Anguilla in the continental growth phase, A. labiata is primarily nocturnal, emerging from shelter after dark to patrol the river bed and margins. Its olfactory and lateral-line senses are highly developed, enabling it to locate prey in turbid water and in total darkness. The diversity of the recorded diet — from aquatic insects through to frogs and fish — reflects an opportunistic predator that takes whatever is locally abundant.
Mating
Anguilla labiata is catadromous and semelparous. It does not mate and spawn in freshwater; it does not form pair bonds, build nests, or establish territories in rivers. Instead, sexual maturity appears to trigger the silver-eel transformation — enlarging eyes, reorganising gonads, ceasing feeding — and the fish then begins a downstream migration toward the sea. The destination spawning grounds of the African Anguilla species have not been precisely located, but they are believed to lie in the southwestern Indian Ocean, analogous to the Atlantic Sargasso spawning grounds used by A. anguilla and A. rostrata.
Males appear to stay closer to coastal and estuarine habitats and to be smaller than females, which penetrate further into inland river systems and grow to larger sizes. This spatial segregation means that mating occurs only after both sexes have reached the oceanic spawning grounds, with no premating association in fresh water. The spawning event, whenever and wherever it occurs, is a single lifetime occurrence.
Breeding
Anguilla labiata cannot be bred in captivity. This is a universal characteristic of the genus Anguilla: all species require an oceanic migration as part of their reproductive biology, and no captive system has successfully brought an adult eel to spawn under artificial conditions. Anguillid "farming" worldwide — including the substantial Japanese and European eel aquaculture industries — depends entirely on catching wild glass eels or elvers as they arrive at river mouths and then growing them out in captivity; no hatchery exists for any Anguilla species.
The larvae (leptocephali) that hatch from the oceanic spawn are leaf-shaped and almost transparent, drifting on ocean currents for months before metamorphosing into glass eels and making their way into coastal and riverine habitats. These tiny juveniles have so far proved impossible to maintain and feed through early development in captivity. There is no parental care at any stage: the adults spawn and die, and the larvae are entirely self-sufficient from hatching.
In the aquarium
Anguilla labiata is not a conventional aquarium fish. At up to 69 in total length and 20 kg, it is among the largest fish profiled on this site, and even a moderate adult would require a very large aquarium with a deep soft substrate, reliable filtration, and an absolutely escape-proof sealed lid — eels of this family are strong, sinuous, and capable of squeezing through gaps that seem impossibly small, and a displaced eel on a floor dies quickly.
Like all Anguilla, it is scaleless in the practical sense (scales are deeply embedded and offer no protection), and it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to abrupt changes in water chemistry. It is a large nocturnal predator that will consume anything that fits in its mouth. In much of its range A. labiata is subject to fisheries regulation, and its NT conservation status and the near-impossibility of captive breeding make it a poor candidate for ornamental keeping. The fish is better appreciated in its natural role as an apex nocturnal predator of the great east African river systems than as an aquarium specimen.
Conservation
Anguilla labiata is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List in the 2019 assessment (under the combination A. bengalensis labiata). The catadromous life history makes all Anguilla species inherently vulnerable: populations depend on open passage between freshwater habitats and the ocean, and any barrier — dam, weir, or sluice — that disrupts the downstream migration of silver eels or the upstream passage of glass elvers can fragment and eventually extirpate local populations. River regulation, water extraction, and sand mining in the Zambezi, Limpopo, and other east African river systems all represent ongoing threats.
The species is also subject to artisanal and commercial fishing pressure in parts of its range, where large eels are valued as food. The near-impossibility of captive breeding means that any overexploitation of wild populations cannot be offset by aquaculture recruitment; the fishery is entirely dependent on natural recruitment from an oceanic spawn whose location is not yet known for the African Anguilla. The NT assessment reflects a species not in immediate crisis but under measurable, ongoing pressure, with a life history that offers little capacity to absorb rapid increases in mortality.
