Macrognathus pentophthalmos was originally described by Gronow in 1854, the authority recorded parenthetically in the current name — indicating a subsequent transfer from the original genus combination. For most of the twentieth century the species was treated as a synonym of Macrognathus aral, the widely distributed spiny eel of South and Southeast Asia, and effectively disappeared from the literature as a distinct entity. A 2008 taxonomic revision published in Zootaxa (Roberts & Britz) formally reinstated it as a valid species, diagnosing it by a combination of meristic and morphometric characters: 14–16 dorsal spines and a pre-dorsal length that falls between 43.3 and 46.8 percent of standard length — proportions that separate it cleanly from M. aral. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the governing authority for valid names, records Macrognathus pentophthalmos as the accepted binomial, with Gronow as describer.
The genus Macrognathus is the Asian counterpart to Mastacembelus, the spiny-eel genera being distributed across tropical Africa and Asia within the family Mastacembelidae. Like all mastacembelids, Macrognathus is placed in the order Synbranchiformes — sharing that order with the swamp eels (Synbranchidae) but entirely unrelated to the true eels of the Anguilliformes. The sinuous body and burrowing habits are convergent adaptations, not shared ancestry. The species epithet pentophthalmos derives from the Greek for 'five-eyed', a traditional descriptive epithet used for several spiny eels that carry ocellated spots along the dorsal fin base resembling false eyes.
Morphology
Macrognathus pentophthalmos is a small spiny eel, with the maximum recorded length standing at 7.5 in standard length according to FishBase — modest compared to the larger Asian mastacembelids of the aquarium trade. The body is elongate and laterally compressed toward the rear, covered in tiny embedded scales and a protective coat of mucus rather than the obvious scales of most bony fishes. The snout terminates in a soft, trunk-like proboscis with tubular nostrils — the characteristic feature of the genus and the sensory tool with which spiny eels probe the substrate for invertebrate prey. A row of short, isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the soft dorsal fin; the Zootaxa revision counts 14–16 dorsal spines as the diagnostic meristic count distinguishing M. pentophthalmos from M. aral.
The colouration follows the typical Macrognathus pattern: a brownish or olive ground colour marked with a series of ocellated spots along the base of the dorsal fin — the 'eyes' referenced in the species name. FishBase records 72 vertebrae, a count consistent with its slender, highly elongate body plan. Sexes are not externally differentiated by any published diagnostic character, though ripe females of mastacembelid spiny eels are generally fuller-bodied than males.
Habitat
Macrognathus pentophthalmos is endemic to Sri Lanka, with its type locality on the island, and current occurrence data from GBIF is limited to Sri Lankan records. It is a freshwater species of benthopelagic habit, associated with the lowland rivers, streams, marshes and floodplain habitats of the island. The 2008 Zootaxa revision noted that it was described as 'common' in surveys conducted around 1980 but was considered possibly extinct by the time of reinstatement, a trajectory reflecting the severe contraction of suitable freshwater habitat across Sri Lanka over the intervening decades.

Whether M. pentophthalmos follows this exact pattern is unstated in the literature, but its phylogenetic position within Mastacembelidae makes the egg-scattering, no-parental-care mode the expected default.
Breeding
Macrognathus pentophthalmos is extremely rarely bred in captivity — if it has been captive-bred at all — and no aquarium breeding accounts appear in the published or hobbyist literature surveyed. The family Mastacembelidae is notoriously difficult to breed in the home aquarium; even the much more commonly kept species such as the fire eel and tire-track eel are rarely spawned by hobbyists, and these far-more-available fish have decades of captive history behind them.
Based on family pattern, a spawning of M. pentophthalmos — were one attempted — would be expected to follow rainfall or large water-change triggers that simulate monsoon onset, with a mature, well-conditioned pair scattering adhesive eggs among fine-leafed plants or root masses in fresh water. The eggs would be expected to hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, yielding tiny, demanding larvae requiring infusoria-grade first foods before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' Critically Endangered status and near-absence from the hobby, any successful captive breeding would be of significant conservation interest.
In the aquarium
Macrognathus pentophthalmos is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, and deliberately so: its Critically Endangered status and likely tiny remaining wild population make commercial collection inappropriate. Advanced keepers who encounter it — or who may encounter closely related small Macrognathus species under trade names — should expect the standard spiny-eel care demands: a tight-fitting, fully sealed lid (all spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that can squeeze through the smallest gaps and will leave an open tank), a deep bed of fine sand for burrowing, dim lighting or heavily planted cover, and meaty live or frozen foods offered after lights-out.
Like all mastacembelids the species is scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality. Its modest adult size of under 8 in means it does not require the very large tanks needed for the fire eel or tire-track eel, but it is still a secretive, nocturnal burrower that will rarely be seen during the day. The honest answer for most hobbyists is that this species should not be sought or acquired: its conservation situation is too precarious, the wild source populations too fragile, and the captive literature too sparse to support a responsible trade.
Conservation
Macrognathus pentophthalmos is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (2019), and its conservation story is one of the starkest in the spiny-eel family. The Zootaxa revision of 2008 that formally re-established the species as valid simultaneously documented an extraordinary population collapse: survey records described it as 'common' in Sri Lankan freshwater habitats around 1980, yet by 2008 the species was so difficult to locate that the authors raised the real possibility it was already extinct. The GBIF occurrence record confirms that modern occurrence data for this species is severely limited within Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's freshwater habitats have suffered decades of degradation from agriculture-driven watershed conversion, irrigation development, sand mining from riverbeds, pollution, and the spread of invasive species. Endemic freshwater fish bearing such narrow geographic ranges — an island-endemic restricted to an already-small island — have no refuge if their native rivers and streams are lost. The species' FishBase resilience estimate (population doubling time under 15 months) suggests it could recover quickly if habitat pressure were reduced, but whether viable populations remain to do so is unknown.
