Taxonomy & naming
Eleotris sandwicensis was described by the French ichthyologists Léon Vaillant and Henri Émile Sauvage in 1875, the species epithet sandwicensis referring to the Sandwich Islands — the old European name for the Hawaiian archipelago. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises it as a valid species within the genus Eleotris and the family Eleotridae.
The family placement is the first thing to understand: although the hobby frequently calls this fish a goby, it is a sleeper or gudgeon, not a true goby. True gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae) bear their pelvic fins fused into a muscular sucker disc; eleotrid sleepers keep both pelvic fins wholly separate, a single anatomical character that distinguishes the two lineages at a glance. In the Hawaiian language the species is known as 'o'opu akupa — one of the five native 'o'opu (stream fish) historically important to Native Hawaiians, who harvested it for food and used it as baitfish. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) confirms the authority as Vaillant & Sauvage, 1875.
Morphology
The Hawaiian sleeper is a powerfully built, fusiform fish that reaches a maximum of 13 in standard length, making it considerably larger than most sleepers encountered in the aquarium trade. The body is rounded in cross-section anteriorly and laterally compressed toward the tail — a classic ambush predator build. Coloration in adults is cryptic: the dorsal surface is brownish-olive to dark grey, the flanks lighter. Juveniles under approximately 1 in SL are strikingly jet black on the upper body with lighter sides, a conspicuous livery that fades as the fish grows.
The two separate pelvic fins are the key diagnostic character separating Eleotris from the true gobies. The head is large and broad with a wide, gape-suited mouth adapted for suction feeding: this predator is capable of engulfing surprisingly large prey. The eyes are placed high on the head. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.9, consistent with a diet dominated by mobile animal prey. No pronounced sexual dimorphism in coloration is reported in the available literature.
Habitat
Eleotris sandwicensis is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, where it is recorded from all the main islands. It inhabits the lower reaches of freshwater streams and estuaries — pools, runs and fast riffles in the lower river corridor — in both fresh and brackish water. Unlike some of the climbing 'o'opu (notably the cling goby Sicyopterus stimpsoni, which scales waterfalls), the Hawaiian sleeper lacks the ability to ascend waterfalls or cascades and is therefore restricted to the lower and estuarine stretches of streams rather than the upper reaches.
Water temperatures in Hawaiian lowland streams are warm year-round. The species tolerates the range of salinities encountered in tidal reaches, reflecting its partly estuarine distribution. Structurally it favours areas with rocks, boulders and crevices that provide ambush cover, consistent with its sit-and-wait predatory strategy. The Bishop Museum's Wai'pio Aquatic Resources survey records it in pools, runs and fast riffles — a broader microhabitat range than many stream specialists.
Feeding
The Hawaiian sleeper is an aggressive, generalist suction-feeder and micro-predator. In the wild its diet spans aquatic invertebrates — native stream snails (hïhïwai, Neritina granosa), introduced snails, aquatic insects and their larvae — as well as small fishes, including other native stream fish. The Bishop Museum's stream survey data describe it as an opportunistic predator taking whatever vertebrate and invertebrate prey is within range, making it an ecologically significant top predator in Hawaiian stream communities.
In the aquarium this translates to a diet of live and frozen meaty foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, earthworm pieces, small feeder invertebrates and, for large adults, small live or thawed fish or shrimp. At its adult size it is a formidable feeder; dry flake and pellet foods are generally refused or accepted only reluctantly. Successful keepers feed primarily live and high-quality frozen foods and should plan for the fish's substantial appetite.
Mating
Eleotris sandwicensis is amphidromous, and its reproductive behaviour follows the pattern shared across much of the genus Eleotris. Adults reside in fresh water or the freshwater–brackish transition zone of Hawaiian streams. When conditions are appropriate, a male selects and defends a sheltered site — a crevice, an undercut bank or the space beneath a boulder — and courts an approaching female.
Courtship involves posturing and fin-display typical of eleotrids broadly, and is believed to occur in the lower stream reaches where both sexes reside. The species' aggressive, territorial character — which makes it a challenging aquarium fish — is especially pronounced in males defending potential spawning sites.
Breeding
Spawning takes place in fresh water. The female deposits a mass of small adhesive eggs on the substrate inside the chosen cavity or shelter, and the male then guards the clutch, fanning the eggs with his fins and driving off intruders until they hatch.
This is where the amphidromous life history diverges sharply from resident cave-spawners. The hatchlings are not retained in fresh water: the tiny larvae are swept downstream and out to sea, where they develop as marine plankton for weeks to months before the post-larvae eventually locate stream mouths and migrate back upriver. This obligate marine larval phase means that Eleotris sandwicensis cannot be bred in the home aquarium — the larvae require the open ocean to complete development, and no closed aquarium system can replicate it. All fish in the hobby are wild-collected from Hawaiian streams, a factor with direct conservation implications. The breeding mode is amphidromous, with male egg-guarding in fresh water followed by obligate marine larval development.
In the aquarium
The Hawaiian sleeper is an uncommon but occasionally available fish in specialist circles, usually collected incidentally in Hawaii and exported in small numbers. It demands respect for its size: at up to 13 in it is not a community fish but a large, predatory centrepiece that will consume any tankmate small enough to engulf. A spacious aquarium of at least 55 US gal is the minimum for an adult, furnished with boulders, large pieces of wood and caves to satisfy its need for shelter and territory.
Water quality should be clean and well-oxygenated, with filtration robust enough to handle the species' substantial waste output. The species tolerates both fresh and slightly brackish water, reflecting its estuarine natural range; a small addition of marine salt is not essential but is tolerated. Temperament is aggressive: only one specimen should be kept per tank unless the aquarium is very large with ample line-of-sight breaks. Companions must be large enough to avoid predation. Diet in captivity centres on live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, shrimp, pieces of fish or prawn — as this species is generally uninterested in prepared dry foods.
Because all specimens are wild-caught (captive breeding being impossible given the amphidromous life cycle), the aquarium acquisition of this species always removes an individual from a wild Hawaiian stream population. Keepers should bear this in mind and source fish responsibly.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Eleotris sandwicensis as Data Deficient (DD, 2011), reflecting insufficient population data to make a confident assessment of extinction risk, despite the species being well known across the Hawaiian archipelago. Its restricted endemic range — confined to the Hawaiian Islands — makes it inherently vulnerable to the pressures bearing down on Hawaiian freshwater systems.
Chief among those pressures are introduced predatory fishes (bass, sunfish and other non-native species) and introduced parasites, both of which have severely damaged native Hawaiian stream communities over the past century. Habitat degradation from dam construction, water diversion, channelisation and riparian land-use change compounds the problem in the lower stream reaches that 'o'opu akupa depends on. Historically the species was an important food and baitfish for Native Hawaiians; commercial exploitation at that scale no longer occurs, but wild collection for the aquarium trade adds a further removal pressure on a fish that cannot self-sustain in captivity. Conservation of the Hawaiian sleeper is inseparable from the broader effort to restore and protect the native stream fauna of Hawai'i.
