Periophthalmus chrysospilos, the gold-spotted mudskipper, is one of the quintessential creatures of the Indo-West Pacific intertidal zone — a true goby (family Oxudercidae) that has taken amphibious life to an extreme, hauling itself across exposed mudflats and mangrove roots on modified pectoral fins for hours at a stretch. Like all mudskippers it is a genuine goby, carrying the fused pelvic sucker disc that defines the group, yet it spends more time in air than most fish spend in water. It reaches around 4.5–5 in and is recognisable by the bright gold or orange spots scattered across its brown back and sides. Its range stretches from eastern India through Southeast Asia to Indonesia, where it is a common denizen of mangrove-fringed estuaries and brackish tidal creeks. Keeping it demands a paludarium — a half-land, half-water enclosure that mimics a tropical mudflat — rather than an ordinary aquarium, and breeding it in captivity is essentially unachieved. It is a fish to admire and study rather than a community tank resident.

Taxonomy & naming

Periophthalmus chrysospilos was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1853 from material collected in the East Indies. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — places it in the family Oxudercidae, subfamily Oxudercinae, the clade that encompasses the mudskippers and their close relatives. Oxudercidae was formerly lumped into Gobiidae, but molecular and morphological work has established it as a distinct family within the Gobioidei; the broader grouping of true gobies is therefore now distributed across Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae.

Within Periophthalmus, the genus contains around a dozen valid species of intertidal mudskippers. The epithet chrysospilos is from the Greek chrysos (gold) and spilos (spot), naming the gold or orange iridescent dots that mark the dorsal surface and fins. No significant synonymy is recorded for this species under the current Catalog of Fishes entry. This is unambiguously a true goby: the pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that separates the Gobioidei from the sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae), which keep their pelvic fins separate.

Morphology

The gold-spotted mudskipper reaches a maximum standard length of around 5 in, with males growing larger than females, and total length in wild Mekong Delta populations ranging from 1.5–4 in in observed samples. The body is cylindrical and robust, tapering to a laterally compressed tail, and the head is large and blunt with the upturned, protruding eyes that give mudskippers their amphibious stare. The dorsal surface and sides are a brownish-olive, liberally flecked with bright gold or orange-yellow spots and iridescent markings; the fins carry similar dotting and are often edged with darker pigment.

The pelvic fins are fused into the characteristic goby sucker disc, which the fish uses to anchor itself on wet mud and mangrove roots when out of water. The pectoral fins are muscular and crutch-like, functioning as forelimbs during terrestrial locomotion. The eyes are periscope-like and can be retracted into moist sockets for cleaning, a feature shared by all Periophthalmus. Sexes are difficult to tell apart externally outside of breeding condition; males develop a higher first dorsal fin and in the breeding season engage in elaborate fin-display courtship behaviours at their burrow entrances.

Habitat

Periophthalmus chrysospilos is a fish of the intertidal zone. Its native range spans the eastern Indian Ocean coast from eastern India through the Mekong Delta and Southeast Asia to Indonesia, where it occupies brackish to marine mangrove forests, nipa palm swamps, tidal mudflats, and the margins of estuarine creeks. FishBase records it as tolerant of both brackish and fully marine salinities, and it is most abundant on the exposed, oxygen-rich mudflats that drain at low tide.

Temperatures across its range are tropical: FishBase records a mean habitat temperature of around 84 °F with a range of roughly 82–84 °F for study sites, though it experiences wider thermal swings across seasons and tidal cycles. The fish is an obligate air-breather in the sense that it spends much of its time fully out of the water; it retains moisture in its gill chambers and exchanges gases through its moist skin, mouth lining, and throat — a cutaneous and buccal respiration system. It cannot survive indefinitely submerged and must have access to air. In the aquarium this translates to a mandatory land area: a paludarium, not a conventional aquarium.

Feeding

Periophthalmus chrysospilos is a carnivorous mesopredator with a trophic level of 3.3 (FishBase), hunting a diverse range of invertebrates and small vertebrates on and around the mudflat surface. Foraging ecology studies from the Mekong Delta record its prey as Acetes spp. (small estuarine shrimp), Uca spp. (fiddler crabs), small molluscs, polychaete worms, small fish, and detrital matter — an opportunistic generalist that takes whatever prey of suitable size presents itself on the mud.

In the aquarium, it should be offered a variety of small live and frozen meaty foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, small shore shrimp, daphnia, and similar invertebrates. It will often ignore dry foods entirely or accept them only after extended acclimation. Because it feeds terrestrially as much as aquatically, food can be placed on the land section of the paludarium where the fish can locate and seize it on the mud surface — this is often a more effective feeding strategy than relying on it to hunt in the water column.

Mating

Mating in Periophthalmus chrysospilos revolves entirely around the male's burrow. Burrow architecture studies from the Mekong Delta record the males excavating J-, Y-, and U-shaped tunnels in the mud during ebb tide, with total lengths of 8.5–10 in and depths of 6–7.5 in; the burrow terminates in a bulbous chamber that the male fills with atmospheric air by carrying mouthfuls from the surface. Courtship takes place at the burrow entrance, where males perform vigorous fin-display and jumping behaviours — erecting the dorsal fin, leaping vertically, and chasing rivals — to attract females and deter competing males.

A receptive female is led into the burrow to inspect the egg chamber. The male's investment in burrow construction, maintenance, and defence is enormous, and territorial aggression between males is intense; in a confined setting without adequate space, injuries are likely. Spawning is year-round in the Mekong Delta, with a peak during the wet season from July to October. Batch fecundity in one Mekong study was approximately 23,000 eggs per spawn.

Breeding

Periophthalmus chrysospilos is a burrow-spawner: the female deposits eggs on the ceiling and upper walls of the air-filled terminal chamber, then leaves. The male assumes sole parental care, guarding the sealed burrow and periodically replenishing the air pocket by breathing mouthfuls of fresh air into the chamber — an active parental behaviour that maintains the oxygen supply for the developing eggs. The eggs develop in air rather than in water, which is unique among fish. After hatching, the larvae are pelagic and must enter brackish or marine water to complete their development.

This life history makes Periophthalmus chrysospilos effectively impossible to breed in the home aquarium. The requirements — sufficiently soft mud of the right depth and cohesion for burrow construction, correct tidal cycling, adequate space for male territory, and ultimately open water access for pelagic larvae — cannot be replicated in a domestic paludarium. The species is wild-collected for the aquarium trade; captive-bred stock is essentially unavailable. Keepers should be aware that their fish is a wild animal and that sustainability in the trade depends on responsible collection management.

In the aquarium

Keeping Periophthalmus chrysospilos demands a purpose-built paludarium — a half-land, half-water enclosure that replicates a tropical mangrove mudflat. The land area must be substantial, textured (fine-grained sand and clay-rich substrate that holds moisture), and easily accessible from the water; the fish should be able to haul out and sit fully exposed for extended periods. Humidity above the land section must be kept high, achieved with a tight-fitting lid; mudskippers desiccate quickly in low humidity and dry air can be lethal.

Water should be brackish — a specific gravity of around 1.005–1.010 is generally recommended, replicating estuarine conditions — and warm, in the range of 79–86 °F. The water section can be relatively shallow; the fish does not need a deep column. Because these fish are territorially aggressive, a single specimen or a well-matched pair is more manageable than a group; males will fight persistently and injure each other without enough space and visual barriers. The tank must be absolutely escape-proof: mudskippers are powerful jumpers and will exit through the smallest gap.

Feeding is easier if food is placed on the mud surface; the fish will also take items floating at the water surface. Live and frozen small invertebrates are the backbone of the diet. This is not a community fish and not a beginner fish; it rewards keepers who treat it as the specialised, semi-terrestrial animal it is.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Periophthalmus chrysospilos as Least Concern in its 2022 assessment, reflecting a wide range and overall stable population across the Indo-West Pacific. However, the assessment notes that Mekong Delta populations face a specific and serious localised threat: indiscriminate harvest for both the aquarium trade and as a food fish. In the Mekong Delta, population biology studies record finite growth parameters and spawning dynamics consistent with a species under measurable harvest pressure.

More broadly, the mudskippers' dependence on intact mangrove and nipa palm estuaries makes them acutely sensitive to coastal development, aquaculture pond conversion, and mangrove deforestation — pressures that have degraded or destroyed large portions of Indo-West Pacific intertidal habitat over the past several decades. The species is also a wild-collected aquarium fish with no captive-breeding supply chain, meaning every individual in the trade is taken from the wild. Buyers should source fish from reputable importers and be aware of the provenance of what they purchase.
