Taxonomy & naming
Hypseleotris kimberleyensis was described by Hoese and Allen in 1982 from material collected at the Barnett River near Barnett Gorge in the central Kimberley, Western Australia. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places the species in the genus Hypseleotris and the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, which is distinct from the true goby families (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae). This distinction is not merely academic: the sleepers lack the fused pelvic sucker disc that defines the true gobies, and their relationships, breeding biology and care requirements diverge accordingly.
A recent revision of the northwest-Australian Hypseleotris (published on ResearchGate, revising gudgeons of Gobiiformes: Eleotridae) confirmed H. kimberleyensis as a valid species within a revised genus concept that synonymised the former genus Kimberleyeleotris and treated Carassiops as a synonym of Hypseleotris. The species thus sits within an Australasian radiation of carp gudgeons — fishes that share the "goby" trade name but are ecologically and evolutionarily a distinct lineage from the Asian river gobies, the bumblebee gobies or the mudskippers they superficially resemble in aquarium catalogues.
Morphology
The Kimberley gudgeon is a small, slender fish reaching a maximum standard length of around 2.5 in. Like other members of Hypseleotris it has a moderately elongate body, two dorsal fins, and the separated pelvic fins diagnostic of the eleotrid family. The caudal fin shape is sexually dimorphic: females carry a truncate (squared-off) tail, while males have a rounded caudal fin — one of the cleaner external sex-characters in the species. Males are also generally darker in colouration.
Detailed colouration data from this species in the wild is sparse in the available literature, reflecting how rarely it is collected and studied. What is noted consistently is that it is a small, cryptic fish associated with rocky substrates and aquatic vegetation, where its colouration presumably provides concealment among sandstone boulders and plant stems.
Habitat
Hypseleotris kimberleyensis is known from a tightly restricted range within the upper Fitzroy River catchment of Western Australia — specifically the Barnett River system, including the Calder River and Manning Creek drainages, centred around Barnett Gorge in the central Kimberley at approximately 16°32'S, 126°08'E. This is strictly freshwater habitat: the species has not been recorded from estuarine or brackish zones.
Within that range it occupies clear, rocky freshwater pools with moderate water flow, substrates of sandstone boulders and mixed gravels, and the presence of aquatic vegetation. Fish have been observed solitarily or in small groups hovering near rocky crevices and submerged branches — a characteristic resting behaviour of the Eleotridae. The Kimberley's wet-dry seasonality means that pools can drop dramatically in the dry season, concentrating fish and heightening vulnerability to any disturbance.
Feeding
Hypseleotris kimberleyensis is a micro-predator in the manner of other small Eleotridae. In the wild it is expected to take small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, copepods and similar prey — from among the rocky substrate and aquatic vegetation of its Kimberley pools. Specific gut-content studies for this species are not available in the accessible literature.
In the aquarium (to the extent the species has been kept), it should be offered a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops and similar items. Like most small eleotrids, it is unlikely to take dry flake readily, and conditioning fish for breeding — were that to be attempted — would require live or high-quality frozen feeds. The small mouth size limits prey dimensions.
Mating
No detailed courtship observations for Hypseleotris kimberleyensis appear in the available literature, and the species is not known to be established in the aquarium hobby. Based on the biology of close relatives within Hypseleotris — resident freshwater species that do not undergo amphidromous migrations — the mating system is inferred to follow the typical eleotrid resident pattern: males select and defend a sheltered site, intensify colouration and court ripe females, and the pair spawn in or near the defended cavity.
Sexual dimorphism — rounded caudal in males versus truncate in females, combined with darker male colouration — provides the signals used in mate assessment. The degree to which seasonal flooding patterns in the Kimberley influence spawning cues is not documented, though a connection to rising water temperatures or early wet-season conditions would be consistent with other Australian freshwater fishes of similar ecology.
Breeding
Hypseleotris kimberleyensis is inferred to be a resident freshwater cave or substrate spawner, consistent with the Hypseleotris group more broadly. In this reproductive mode the female lays adhesive eggs in a sheltered crevice, cavity, or on a firm substrate surface, and the male guards and fans the eggs until they hatch — genuine paternal care that keeps the entire cycle within fresh water. This distinguishes the species sharply from the amphidromous cling-gobies (Stiphodon, Sicyopterus) whose larvae must develop at sea and which cannot be captive-bred.
In practice, however, Hypseleotris kimberleyensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and captive-breeding accounts are effectively absent from the literature. Its Endangered status and restricted range in a remote part of Western Australia mean that it is rarely if ever available to hobbyists, and no published husbandry protocol exists. Any future captive management would more likely occur in an Australian conservation context than in the trade.
In the aquarium
Hypseleotris kimberleyensis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is not bred commercially, is not traded regularly, and its Endangered status in a restricted Kimberley catchment means that wild collection is not a sound basis for the trade. Information on its care in captivity is correspondingly sparse.
For the rare specialist or conservation-breeding programme, the habitat profile points toward a setup of warm, clear freshwater (reflecting its rocky Kimberley pool environment) with sandstone-style rocky hardscape, moderate flow, and cover in the form of crevices and plant growth. As a small eleotrid micro-predator it would need live and frozen foods sized appropriately for a 2.5 in fish. A covered tank is prudent for any small goby or gudgeon, which can be prone to jumping. At present, interest in this species is best directed toward supporting conservation of its Barnett River habitat rather than sourcing the fish for a home aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypseleotris kimberleyensis as Endangered in 2019 (Morgan & Moore, assessment ID e.T10732A129047152). That status reflects the species' exceptionally narrow range — confined to the Barnett River system, including the Calder River and Manning Creek drainages in the central Kimberley — and the pressures that threaten Kimberley freshwater habitats: altered hydrology, invasive species (in particular feral pigs and introduced fish), degraded riparian zones, and the long-term uncertainty of a highly seasonal semi-arid catchment.
The Kimberley is increasingly recognised as a global priority for freshwater biodiversity; it holds a disproportionately large number of range-restricted endemic freshwater species, many poorly known. Hypseleotris kimberleyensis is one of those endemics. Its restricted range means that even a localised degradation of water quality or connectivity in the Barnett River system could be significant. Conservation measures for such species depend on the protection of intact catchment hydrology and the management of invasive threats across remote Kimberley river systems.
