Taxonomy & naming
Mugilogobius sarasinorum was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1897 under the original combination Gobius sarasinorum, with the type locality in Sulawesi. The species was subsequently moved through at least one intermediate genus — Vaimosa — before being placed in Mugilogobius, the genus in which it currently stands. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the authority for valid names, currently recognises Mugilogobius sarasinorum (Boulenger, 1897) in the family Oxudercidae.
Mugilogobius is a genus of small true gobies widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific and Southeast Asia. The genus belongs to the Oxudercidae, the family now used for the bulk of the gobies that were formerly lumped into the vast old family Gobiidae; taxonomy in this group has been revised substantially in recent decades and researchers working from morphological and molecular data continue to refine the generic boundaries. Aquarists should be aware that older publications may list the species under Gobius, Vaimosa or a different combination.
This is a true goby, not a sleeper or gudgeon: the pelvic fins are fused into a sucker disc, the defining character of the true gobies. The sleepers (Eleotridae) keep their pelvic fins separate and include the peacock gudgeon and the purple-spotted gudgeons sold alongside gobies in the trade. Gobies as a group are overwhelmingly marine; the freshwater and brackish species such as M. sarasinorum are the exceptions.
Morphology
Mugilogobius sarasinorum is a small, elongate goby reaching approximately 2 in total length (mature fish are typically 1–1.5 in standard length). The body plan is typical for the genus: slightly compressed, with two separate dorsal fins, a blunt head, and the pelvic fins fused into the characteristic cup-shaped sucker disc of the true gobies. Colouration is cryptic — muted browns, tans and grey-greens with diffuse mottling and banding that helps the fish blend into a substrate of sand, gravel and leaf litter.
Sexual dimorphism in Mugilogobius is subtle at small sizes. Breeding males typically show more intense colouration and may develop a slight swelling of the nape. Females in spawning condition become visibly round-bodied. The species lacks the vivid colour contrasts of the peacock gudgeon or many Rhinogobius, and is best appreciated for its behaviour rather than its colours.
As a true goby it possesses the fused pelvic disc clearly visible when the fish rests on a hard surface. This disc is used to anchor the fish against moderate current and to wedge into crevices — a key character separating the true gobies from the sleepers and from the gudgeons in the same trade stream.
Habitat
Mugilogobius sarasinorum is endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Sulawesi is one of the most biodiverse islands on Earth, home to a large number of endemic freshwater fish found nowhere else. Within Sulawesi the species inhabits streams, lake margins and slow-moving or still freshwater bodies, often among dense vegetation, submerged leaf litter and rocky crevices close to the bottom.
The preferred microhabitat is sheltered: patches of leaf litter, root tangles, crevices between stones and the bases of aquatic plants rather than open, fast-flowing riffles. Water conditions on Sulawesi vary considerably by drainage, but the freshwater systems inhabited by this goby tend toward neutral to slightly soft and moderately warm water, broadly in the range of 72–79 °F and pH 6.5–7.5. Some populations may encounter mild brackish influence near lake margins or estuaries, but the species is predominantly a freshwater fish.
Data on the precise distribution within Sulawesi and the exact type locality remain sparse in the accessible English-language literature. The species is associated with the ancient lake systems and river drainages of the island rather than a single point locality, though the original Boulenger specimens came from the Sarasin brothers' collecting sites.
Feeding
Mugilogobius sarasinorum is a micro-predator, hunting small invertebrates among the leaf litter, algae mats and rocky substrates of its native Sulawesi streams. Its natural diet consists of copepods, ostracods, small insect larvae, daphnia and other tiny crustaceans and aquatic invertebrates — the kind of diverse micro-fauna found in well-established leaf-litter biotopes.
In the aquarium this species typically refuses dry flake food or accepts it very poorly, and fish kept exclusively on flake quickly lose condition and reproductive drive. A varied menu of small live and frozen foods is essential: copepods, daphnia, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), brine shrimp nauplii and adults, cyclops and similar items sized to the fish's small mouth. Live foods are especially valuable for conditioning a pair for breeding and for maintaining the long-term health of an established specimen. Grindal worm and small portions of white worm can be offered as occasional supplements but should not form the bulk of the diet.
Mating
Mugilogobius sarasinorum is a resident freshwater cave-spawner — its whole reproductive cycle takes place in fresh water, with no amphidromous larval stage that would make captive breeding impossible. This is the key distinction from the cling-gobies and many stream gobies in this atlas whose larvae must develop in the sea and can rarely if ever be bred in the home aquarium.
As with other resident substrate-spawning gobies, pair formation and spawning are triggered by good condition, stable warm water and the presence of a suitable spawning site. A well-fed male in reproductive condition becomes more territorial, holding a cave, crevice, length of PVC pipe or hollow coconut shell as his spawning territory and displaying to females that approach. Courtship involves fin-flaring and colour display. A ripe female is noticeably full-bodied; she enters the cave when she accepts the male's display.
Breeding
Spawning takes place inside the chosen cave or crevice. The female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of the spawning site, then typically withdraws or is driven off by the male. From that point the male assumes sole parental duty, guarding the site and fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to keep them oxygenated and prevent fungal attack. At 75 °F incubation takes roughly five to eight days; newly hatched larvae are small and have a small yolk sac.
First foods for the fry must be correspondingly tiny: infusoria or commercial micro-food products as a starting ration, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and paramecia as the fry grow. A separate rearing vessel with aged, clean water and gentle aeration gives the best survival rates. Multiple spawning is possible in a well-maintained pair kept on a live-food diet. The key practical points are providing a suitable cave or spawning tile, maintaining water quality, and having a supply of live micro-foods ready before attempting to breed the species. Because the entire cycle is in fresh water, captive breeding — while requiring care — is genuinely achievable.
In the aquarium
Mugilogobius sarasinorum is a specialist's fish: small, cryptic and demanding of live foods, it is not a beginner's goby but rewards the keeper who meets its needs. A tank of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or a small group, with a dark substrate of fine sand or gravel, generous areas of leaf litter (dried catappa or oak leaves work well), smooth pebbles and river cobbles, and several caves or PVC pipes of the right diameter to serve as spawning sites and hiding places. Gentle filtration with minimal flow suits its preference for still or slow-moving water; it does not need strong current.
The tank must have a tightly fitted lid: like most gobies, M. sarasinorum can and will jump, and losses through open gaps are common. Water quality should be stable: neutral to slightly soft and warm, in the range of 72–79 °F and pH 6.5–7.5. The species does not require added salt and is kept as a strictly freshwater fish. It is not a community goby — males are territorial with one another and with other bottom-dwellers, so provide sufficient line-of-sight breaks and caves; a species tank or a biotope setup with small, peaceful upper-water dither fish is the most practical approach.
Diet is the commonest keeper-failure axis: this goby typically refuses dry flake and will slowly decline without live or frozen micro-foods. A regular supply of copepods, daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp is non-negotiable. Keep that in mind before acquiring the fish; availability of suitable foods should be confirmed before purchase.
Conservation
Mugilogobius sarasinorum has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and it carries no published conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than a status being assigned by inference. As a freshwater endemic of Sulawesi — an island with a notably high proportion of endemic freshwater fish — the species is in principle vulnerable to the pressures that affect small-range island endemics everywhere: watershed deforestation, sedimentation of clear streams, extraction for the aquarium trade and alteration of lake and river hydrology by agriculture and development.
Sulawesi's ancient lakes (particularly Malili Lakes — Matano, Mahalona and Towuti) and their associated river systems support an exceptional diversity of endemic organisms, and those systems have attracted growing conservation attention in recent decades. How much of this broader concern applies specifically to M. sarasinorum at the population level is not known from published data. The species does appear in the ornamental fish trade, and the modest size of the island's drainages means that collection pressure, even at low volumes, could be meaningful for a restricted endemic. Aquarists interested in the species are encouraged to seek tank-raised stock where available and to be conservative in collecting pressure on wild populations.
