Taxonomy & naming
Stiphodon atratus was described by Ronald Watson in 1996 and is placed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) in the family Oxudercidae — the broad clade that now encompasses many of the former gobies after successive revisions of Gobioidei systematics. The genus Stiphodon itself was long placed in Gobiidae and, earlier, some species passed through synonymy under Gobius or Sicydium; the Catalog's current assignment to Oxudercidae reflects the ongoing molecular and morphological re-evaluation of the gobies and their relatives.
The genus Stiphodon belongs to the subfamily Sicydiinae, the cling-gobies — a diverse Indo-Pacific group of rheophilic stream gobies that share a common amphidromous life history and an aufwuchs-grazing diet. The specific epithet atratus means 'clothed in black' in Latin, a reference to the dark coloration of the male. No historical synonyms have been recorded for this species.
Morphology
Stiphodon atratus is a small goby reaching approximately 1–1.5 in total length. The pelvic fins are fused into a concave sucker disc — the anatomical character that defines the true gobies and allows the fish to adhere to smooth rock surfaces in high-velocity current. The body is slender and somewhat dorsoventrally flattened, built for life on the streambed rather than in open water.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Breeding males are dark, almost blackish across the dorsum and flanks — the origin of the name atratus — and typically show vivid neon-blue or blue-green iridescent markings on the head and anterior body, a pattern common in the sibling Sicydiinae and the reason many hobbyists call these fish 'neon gobies'. Females and juveniles are considerably plainer, cryptically marked in brown and cream with a mid-lateral stripe. The two dorsal fins are separate; the tail is rounded.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it inhabits fast, clear, cool-to-warm upland and lowland streams over bedrock and large cobble. It is a strict rheophile: the habitat is defined by strong current, high dissolved oxygen, low turbidity and hard substratum colonised by biofilm, diatoms and fine algae — the exact surface layer the fish feeds on.
Water parameters in Sulawesi highland streams vary by altitude. Recorded data for Stiphodon species from comparable Indonesian habitats indicate temperatures of approximately 64–79 °F (64–79 °F) depending on elevation, pH 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. These are not still, tannin-stained blackwater environments: clarity and oxygen saturation are high, and stagnant or warm conditions are unsuitable. The species does not naturally inhabit brackish water, though larvae complete their planktonic stage at sea.
Feeding
Stiphodon atratus is an obligate aufwuchs grazer. It uses its broad, scraping mouth to rasp biofilm, diatoms, microscopic algae and fine organic matter directly off rock and hard substrate — a diet built around surface microflora rather than invertebrates or suspended particles. This is the central challenge of keeping the species: a tank that lacks a mature, well-developed biofilm provides essentially nothing for the fish to eat, and starvation is the leading cause of death in newly acquired specimens.
In the aquarium the fish should be offered the established biofilm of rocks and glass from a tank running for at least six months, supplemented two or three times daily with blanched spinach, courgette or cucumber slices, thin algae wafers pressed against the glass, and occasional small frozen foods such as cyclops or bloodworm. It will not thrive on standard flake or pellets as a dietary staple. Feeding in a tank with fast current over a biofilm-covered hardscape most closely replicates the wild feeding behaviour.
Mating
As in the other Sicydiinae, reproductive activity in Stiphodon atratus takes place in fast freshwater streams. Males establish territories around suitable spawning sites — crevices, the undersides of flat stones or cavities on the streambed — and display with intensified neon colouration and fin-spreading to attract females. Competition between males is vigorous, and the stronger male's dark colouration and iridescent head markings serve as honest signals of condition.
Females approach a holding male's territory and, if courtship succeeds, enter the spawning site. The pair spawns inside the crevice or cavity with the female depositing adhesive eggs on the ceiling or walls. After spawning the female's role ends; care of the clutch falls entirely to the male.
Breeding
Stiphodon atratus is amphidromous — a breeding mode shared across the genus and the subfamily Sicydiinae that makes captive reproduction effectively impossible. The male guards the adhesive egg clutch in his cavity for approximately three to five weeks until the eggs hatch. The newly hatched larvae are tiny, undeveloped, and immediately swept downstream by the current; they drift into estuarine and marine waters, where they spend a planktonic developmental phase before metamorphosing into juvenile gobies. These post-larvae then return to fresh water and migrate upstream, using their pelvic sucker disc to scale obstacles including waterfalls.
The dependency on a marine planktonic phase means the life cycle cannot be completed in a closed aquarium system. No successful captive breeding of Stiphodon atratus has been documented. All fish in the trade are wild-caught from Sulawesi and should be assumed to be so. Keeping amphidromous gobies responsibly requires acknowledging this: every fish purchased was removed from a wild population, and collection pressure on endemic island-stream species is a genuine concern.
In the aquarium
Stiphodon atratus is not a beginner fish. Success depends on meeting three non-negotiable requirements: very high water flow, excellent oxygenation, and a mature biofilm-covered rockscape. A powerhead or high-turnover canister filter directed over a bed of smooth cobbles and boulders is essential; the fish sits in the current and grazes the rock surface, and without both the flow and the biofilm it declines quickly. The tank should have been running for at least six months and contain visibly algae- and biofilm-covered rock before introducing the species.
A tank of 15–20 US gal suits a small group, with a covered lid — Stiphodon species are jumpers and will clear an unlidded tank. Water must be kept clean, cool to warm (64–79 °F / 64–79 °F), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard, and highly oxygenated; nitrate should be kept low, as these fish come from oligotrophic streams. Compatible tankmates should not compete for biofilm or disturb the benthic foraging; small, mid-water schooling fish work well. Males are territorial with one another and benefit from visual breaks in the hardscape. No salt is required or beneficial. All specimens available in the trade are wild-collected from Sulawesi.
Conservation
Stiphodon atratus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no conservation category applies, and we record it as Not Evaluated rather than assign a status that has not been established. This is typical for small, endemic stream gobies in Indonesia and across the Indo-Pacific: biogeographic surveys are limited, population data are sparse, and formal assessment lags behind description.
As a Sulawesi endemic confined to fast, clear-water stream habitat, the species is inherently exposed to the pressures bearing on those ecosystems: deforestation and agricultural run-off that increase siltation and reduce the benthic clarity on which an aufwuchs grazer depends; hydroelectric infrastructure; and collection for the aquarium trade. Because the species cannot be captive-bred, every individual sold has been taken from the wild. Hobbyists wishing to keep Stiphodon atratus should source fish from reputable importers, minimise unnecessary purchases, and maintain the precise water quality that extends the fish's lifespan in captivity — a fish kept for years in a well-maintained system represents a far lighter footprint than one purchased and lost to starvation within weeks.
