Taxonomy & naming
Stiphodon percnopterygionus was described by Watson and Kottelat in 1995, with type-locality material from the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places the genus Stiphodon within the family Oxudercidae — the restructured higher-level family that encompasses the former Gobionellidae and a portion of the traditional Gobiidae. The sucker disc formed by the fused pelvic fins is the synapomorphy that marks all true gobies; the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) keep their pelvic fins separate, and that single character is the clearest way to tell the two groups apart.
Stiphodon belongs to the subfamily Sicydiinae, a clade of amphidromous stream gobies distributed across the Indo-Pacific, from the western Indian Ocean islands east to the Pacific and north to Japan. The genus has accumulated numerous species since its revision, and several close relatives occur in the same Sulawesi and Philippine stream systems. The specific epithet percnopterygionus comes from the Greek perkos (dusky or dark) and pterygion (a small fin or wing), referencing the distinctively darkened fins seen in males — an apt name for a fish where the black finnage is a primary recognition character.
Morphology
Stiphodon percnopterygionus is a tiny goby, reaching only around 1 in in standard length as an adult. The body is slender and slightly depressed — suited to lying flat against rock in fast current — and the large pectoral fins spread laterally like paddles to aid station-holding. The pelvic fins are fully fused into the characteristic sucker disc of the true gobies, allowing the fish to cling to vertical and even overhanging wet rock in strong flow.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as is typical across Stiphodon. Adult males display dark, often jet-black finnage — particularly the dorsal, caudal and anal fins — overlaid with iridescent and colour-banded markings on the body; the pattern shifts with reproductive state and can be striking in fully conditioned fish. Females and juveniles are more cryptically marked, generally brownish or olive, and lack the vivid fin pigmentation of breeding males. The prominent fin darkening that gives the species its name is most intense in dominant and breeding-condition males.
Habitat
This species is native to fast-flowing, rocky, clear-water streams on the island of Sulawesi and the broader Indonesian archipelago in the Wallacea region. These are high-gradient, well-oxygenated torrential streams where the current runs strongly over basalt and limestone cobble, creating the biofilm-coated rock surface on which the fish feeds. Water is clean, warm to cool by elevation and season, with low nutrient load and very high dissolved oxygen.
Stiphodon percnopterygionus is a rheophilic bottom-dweller: it is found in the fastest sections of these streams, clinging to boulders and cobble in the splash zone and riffles. It is a freshwater fish for the purposes of daily life, though as an amphidromous species the larvae and post-larvae must transit through estuarine and marine water. The habitat is emphatically not still blackwater — aquarists who try to maintain Stiphodon in low-flow, warm, soft tropical community conditions typically lose fish quickly from inadequate oxygenation and biofilm collapse.
Feeding
Stiphodon percnopterygionus is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. It uses its subterminal, scraping mouth to rasp diatoms, microalgae, fine algae and associated microfauna from the surface of submerged rock. In nature, the abundant biofilm on well-lit, fast-washed stone provides a continuous food source and the fish graze steadily throughout the day.
In the aquarium this is the single most critical husbandry point: the fish will starve in a bare tank or in a newly set-up aquarium where biofilm has not yet had time to develop. A dense, mature biofilm-and-algae covering on rocks and hard surfaces is a prerequisite, not an optional extra. That covering should be supplemented with soft, palatable green foods — blanched spinach, spirulina-based wafers, nori — and very small frozen invertebrates such as baby brine shrimp or cyclops offered as a protein supplement. This species does not thrive on standard community flake and should not be housed with faster, more aggressive feeders that out-compete it at food time. It is not a beginner fish and not a flake-food feeder.
Mating
Stiphodon percnopterygionus is amphidromous, a life-history strategy shared across the subfamily Sicydiinae. Adults court and mate in fresh water — in fast, rocky stream sections in the wild. Males are territorial on rocky substrates and compete through colour display and fin-spreading, with dominant males in peak breeding colour showing their most intense fin darkening. A male holds a small territory around a crevice, cave or flat underside of a large stone, which serves as the spawning site.
Courtship involves the male displaying to passing females from his defended site, intensifying his colour to advertising black-fin intensity. Females ready to spawn are attracted to the site; once a pair forms, spawning occurs on or within the stone refuge.
Breeding
The male guards a batch of small adhesive eggs deposited on the underside of a rock or inside a crevice in fresh-running water. He fans and tends the eggs until they hatch. At hatching, however, the larvae are tiny and poorly developed, and they are swept immediately downstream by the current into the river's lower reaches and then out to the sea.
Those larvae develop as marine plankton for a period of weeks to months before the post-larvae — now tiny but fully metamorphosed gobies — return to fresh water. The post-larvae use their pelvic sucker disc to climb upstream, scaling even waterfalls in their dispersal back to stream habitat. This entire marine phase makes captive breeding effectively impossible in a home aquarium: the larvae cannot survive in fresh water, and providing the oceanic planktonic environment they require is beyond any practical setup. Every Stiphodon percnopterygionus in the aquarium trade is wild-caught, usually as post-larvae or juveniles collected at the point of stream re-entry. Prospective keepers should source from responsible wild-collection operations and not purchase fish speculatively.
In the aquarium
Stiphodon percnopterygionus is a specialist fish that rewards keepers who understand its needs but will decline rapidly for those who do not. The minimum setup is a mature aquarium — ideally at least six months old — with substantial coverage of biofilm and algae on rocks, strong water movement from a circulation pump or powerhead, high dissolved oxygen, and very clean, low-nutrient water with stable parameters. Without mature biofilm the fish will starve; without strong flow and oxygenation it will become stressed and disease-prone. A bare or new tank is not suitable.
A long, low aquarium suits the fish well: it wants horizontal swimming room over a boulder-and-cobble bottom, and males will defend small territories around caves and crevices, so providing multiple refuges reduces aggression. Because they are tiny — barely 1 in at full size — they are best kept as a species-only group or with small, non-competitive tankmates that will not outcompete them for food. The tank must be covered tightly; like most gobies they are agile jumpers that will find any gap. Temperature should reflect their stream origin — warm but not excessively hot, with good seasonal variation acceptable. This is not a community fish for a general planted tank; it is a dedicated setup species for the keeper genuinely interested in rheophilic stream gobies.
Conservation
Stiphodon percnopterygionus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is treated here as Not Evaluated. Many small-range stream gobies of the Sulawesi and Wallacea region share this status: their restricted endemic distributions, limited survey coverage, and the complexities of amphidromous taxonomy mean that formal assessments lag far behind description.
The species faces the pressures common to island-stream specialists: deforestation, agricultural runoff, dam construction and water abstraction all degrade the fast, clear, rocky stream habitats on which it depends. Amphidromous species are additionally sensitive to barriers between their freshwater and marine environments — culverts, weirs and dams that block larval or post-larval migration can sever the population-connectivity that makes amphidromy work. Because this fish cannot be bred in captivity, all trade specimens are wild-collected; conscientious sourcing and a willingness to maintain the species in excellent conditions — rather than as a cheap impulse buy — are the best contribution the hobby can make. Targeted stream-protection in Sulawesi and support for Indonesian freshwater fish surveys would be the most meaningful conservation steps.
