Taxonomy & naming
Oligolepis stomias was described by the South African ichthyologist J. L. B. Smith in 1941. The genus name Oligolepis means 'few scales' in Greek (oligos = few; lepis = scale), referring to the notably small scale count that distinguishes the genus from the closely related Vaimosa and other estuarine gobies of the Indo-Pacific. The species epithet stomias derives from the Greek stoma, meaning mouth, likely alluding to a characteristic of the oral anatomy.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the authority for valid fish names — places Oligolepis in the family Oxudercidae, the family that encompasses most of the 'true' gobies of estuarine and freshwater environments. Earlier literature sometimes treated these gobies under the broader family Gobiidae before the recent phylogenetic revisions; readers may encounter Oligolepis stomias under the synonym Gobiidae in older sources.
The defining character of the true gobies — shared by Oligolepis — is the fusion of the paired pelvic fins into a single cup-shaped sucker disc on the belly. This is the first thing to establish: Oligolepis is a true goby, not a sleeper or gudgeon (Eleotridae), and its pelvic sucker is the clearest anatomical marker of that placement. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine group; the brackish-estuarine Oligolepis stomias is very much the exception — a genus that has colonised tidal fresh and brackish water from a largely marine ancestry.
Morphology
Oligolepis stomias is a small goby, reaching approximately 1–2 in in standard length at maturity. The body plan is typical of the estuarine gobies: a somewhat cylindrical, moderately compressed form, slightly dorsoventrally flattened anteriorly, with the large head and broad mouth characteristic of a benthic micro-predator. The pelvic fins are completely fused into the sucker disc that is the hallmark of the true gobies.
The genus name alludes to a reduced scale count relative to similar genera, which gives the skin a slightly smoother appearance than many of the larger estuarine gobies. Colouration is typical for a cryptic, estuarine bottom-dweller: pale, mottled greys and tans with darker saddle markings that provide camouflage against silty substrates and mangrove roots. Detailed colour and finnage data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; further morphological description awaits more comprehensive treatment in regional ichthyological surveys.
Habitat
Oligolepis stomias occurs in tidal rivers, estuaries and mangrove systems across its Indo-West Pacific range, with the type locality in the river systems of Thailand and the Malay Archipelago (Malesia). It inhabits the brackish and lower freshwater reaches of coastal rivers — the transitional zone where salinity fluctuates daily with the tides, mangrove roots provide shelter, and the soft, silty substrate is rich in small invertebrates.
Like most estuarine gobies, it tolerates a wide salinity range but performs best in brackish water with measurable salt. The characteristic habitat is slow-flowing to still, tidal water over soft mud or silt, often under or near mangrove vegetation. Water temperatures in this tropical zone are warm year-round, typically 75–86 °F, and pH is close to neutral to slightly alkaline as the freshwater and marine influences mix.
Feeding
Oligolepis stomias is a micro-predator in the manner of most small estuarine gobies. In the wild it forages over soft substrates and among mangrove debris for small crustaceans, copepods, aquatic insect larvae, worms and other benthic invertebrates, locating prey by sight and ambush from the bottom.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and copepods. Like most true gobies it is likely to ignore or reject dry flake; a diet based predominantly on meaty, small-particle live or frozen foods is needed to keep it in good condition. Its small mouth dictates small prey items. Reliance on flake or pellets alone should be avoided.
Mating
Oligolepis stomias is, like the majority of resident estuarine gobies, a substrate spawner with male parental care — not an amphidromous species whose larvae must develop at sea, and not a mouthbrooder. Courtship in small benthic gobies typically involves the male establishing and defending a territory around a chosen spawning cavity — a crevice, an empty shell, a hollow root or a similar enclosed space — and displaying with fin erection and colour intensification to attract receptive females.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been described in detail in the accessible literature for this species; in closely related estuarine gobies the sexes are often similar externally, with males slightly larger and occasionally showing more vivid patterning during the breeding season.
Breeding
As a resident brackish-estuarine goby, Oligolepis stomias completes its full life cycle in brackish and tidal fresh water without any obligatory marine larval phase. The breeding mode is cave or substrate spawning: the female deposits adhesive eggs inside a sheltered cavity, and the male then takes sole responsibility for guarding and fanning the clutch with his fins until hatching, providing genuine parental care. This strategy — consistent across the resident gobies of the Oligolepis type — means that in principle the species can be spawned in a suitably arranged brackish aquarium, unlike the amphidromous cling-gobies whose larvae cannot complete development without the sea.
In practice, Oligolepis stomias is very rarely kept in aquaria and there are no published accounts of captive spawning. Basic requirements for any breeding attempt would include mature brackish water, caves or crevices as spawning sites, a high-protein diet of live and frozen foods to condition the pair, and careful observation — the male's guarding behaviour is the key indicator of a successful spawn.
In the aquarium
Oligolepis stomias is extremely rare in the aquarium trade and is effectively a specialist's fish. It is not offered in mainstream retail and has minimal hobby documentation. Any specimen encountered is most likely wild-collected from its native estuarine range rather than captive-bred.
Keeping requirements follow the standard template for small brackish estuarine gobies: a tank with mature brackish water (specific gravity approximately 1.005–1.010, though exact tolerances for this species are unrecorded), a soft or sandy substrate, plenty of caves and sheltered crevices, gentle filtration that does not produce strong current, and a diet of small live and frozen foods. A covered tank is advisable — gobies are capable jumpers. Males of small estuarine gobies are often mildly territorial with one another and benefit from line-of-sight breaks between territories. Given its specialist requirements, very limited availability, and near-absence from the hobby literature, Oligolepis stomias is of interest primarily to keepers with dedicated experience in small Indo-Pacific brackish gobies.
Conservation
Oligolepis stomias has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. The species is known from estuarine and tidal river systems across the Indo-West Pacific — a broad range that in principle includes Thailand, the Malay Peninsula and the Malay Archipelago — but detailed distributional and population data are lacking in the accessible literature.
The primary threats to estuarine gobies in this part of the world are the widespread degradation of mangrove and tidal river habitats through aquaculture expansion, coastal development, deforestation of river catchments, and water pollution from agricultural and urban sources. These pressures are severe and ongoing across SE Asia, but without a formal assessment and range-wide survey data the status of Oligolepis stomias cannot be evaluated with confidence. Its apparent rarity in collections and the hobby suggests it may be uncommon or localised even within its range, warranting attention in regional freshwater and estuarine biodiversity surveys.
