Cobitis longitaeniatus was described by the Vietnamese ichthyologist Ngô Sỹ Vân (cited simply as Ngô) in 2008, one of a wave of new Cobitis species described from Vietnam and neighbouring Indochina in the 2000s as the region's stream fauna was surveyed more closely. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true or spined loaches, within the genus Cobitis — the same genus that holds the well-known European spined loach, Cobitis taenia, and dozens of other species spread across Eurasia.
