Beaufortia multiocellata is a small hillstream loach endemic to freshwater streams of Vietnam, described by Nguyen in 2005. Like all members of the genus, it is built for life in fast, turbulent, highly oxygenated water: the body is flattened, the paired fins are spread wide and the belly is modified into a sucker-like adhesion surface that locks the fish to smooth rock in torrential flow. It is a biofilm grazer and a cool-water specialist — two points that spell out, plainly, that it is not a fish for a warm, still, newly set-up tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Beaufortia multiocellata was described by Nguyen in 2005 from freshwater sources in Vietnam and is placed in the family Gastromyzontidae (hillstream loaches), order Cypriniformes. The genus Beaufortia was erected for a group of flattened, rheophilic balitoroid loaches distributed from Yunnan, southern China southward into northern Indochina; it now sits in Gastromyzontidae following the revision of the old broad Balitoridae into narrower families.

The species epithet multiocellata — Latin for 'many-eyed' or 'many-spotted' — likely refers to a pattern of ocellated (eye-like) spots on the body, which is characteristic of several Beaufortia. No synonyms are recorded in the literature, and the Catalog of Fishes treats the original combination as valid.

Morphology

Beaufortia multiocellata shares the strongly depressed, torpedo-shaped body plan that is the hallmark of the hillstream loach clade. The head is broad and flattened, the snout blunt and rounded, and the pectoral and pelvic fins are held horizontal in a broad skirt that, together with the flattened belly, generates suction against hard substrates in fast current. The mouth is inferior and disc-like, with fleshy lips adapted for rasping biofilm from rock surfaces.

The body is near-scaleless — the skin is smooth or with only vestigial scale remnants — which, as in other gastromyzontids, means the fish absorbs medications readily and is sensitive to copper-based and organophosphate treatments. Reliable maximum size data for this species are not available; congeners in the genus (notably Beaufortia kweichowensis) reach roughly 2.5–3 in in standard length, and B. multiocellata is expected to fall in a similar small-bodied range. A suborbital spine is present as in most loaches of this clade.

Habitat

Beaufortia multiocellata is endemic to freshwater streams of Vietnam, likely associated with the highland torrent systems of the Annamite Range or the northern Vietnamese highlands — the typical range of genus Beaufortia, which reaches from Yunnan in southern China down into northern Indochina. The precise type locality has not been recovered from the available sources.

The ecological picture consistent with the genus is: shallow, fast-flowing headwater streams and rocky hill tributaries over clean bedrock or boulder substrate, with very high dissolved oxygen from the turbulent water surface. The water is cool — genus-level data point to temperatures of roughly 61–75 °F — and clear, with near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH. This is categorically not the warm, still, lowland or tropical reservoir environment; it is a cold-montane torrent, and any keeper must reproduce that character of flow and oxygenation to keep the fish alive.

Feeding

Like all Beaufortia, B. multiocellata is a benthic biofilm grazer. In the wild it uses its rasping disc-like mouth to scrape diatoms, soft green algae, periphyton, and microscopic invertebrates from the surface of hard substrate — the nutritional package that hobbyists call aufwuchs. It is obligately tied to a mature biofilm surface; a bare or newly set-up tank provides nothing for it to eat, and starvation in such an environment is the single most common cause of death in the genus.

In aquarium care the diet must be built around abundant algae-covered rock and glass, supplemented with quality sinking foods: algae wafers, spirulina-enriched tablets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional small live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp. Feeding two to three times daily is advisable; competition over patches of biofilm means that all individuals must be able to access food. It is not a flake-eater and should not be treated as a general-purpose algae cleaner.

Mating

Sexing Beaufortia in the aquarium is not straightforward. Mature females of related congeners tend to be deeper-bodied and plumper across the abdomen when in breeding condition, while males may be slimmer-waisted and, in some species, develop fine tubercles on the snout. Without detailed data specific to B. multiocellata, these general gastromyzontid cues are the best guide available.

In the wild, hillstream loaches of this group presumably spawn in response to seasonal hydrology — rising water levels, temperature shifts, and changes in flow in highland torrents — as most rheophilic loaches do. Recreating those cues convincingly in a home tank is uncommon, which is part of why most Beaufortia are rarely spawned in the aquarium.

Breeding

Beaufortia multiocellata has no documented record of captive breeding, and the species should be considered rarely or never bred in the home aquarium. The genus as a whole is among the more tractable hillstream loaches in this regard: a few Gastromyzontidae, notably Sewellia lineolata, have been successfully spawned in well-maintained, mature, high-flow river tanks, depositing eggs among stones and gravel with no subsequent parental care. Whether B. multiocellata could achieve the same under similarly well-replicated conditions is unknown.

The breeding mode, where it can be inferred from close congeners, is egg-scattering over hard substrate in fast-moving water, with no parental care once spawning is complete. Keepers should not expect to breed this fish and should not assume a river-tank spawning is possible without species-specific evidence.

In the aquarium

Keeping Beaufortia multiocellata well is straightforward in principle but unforgiving in practice. The non-negotiable requirements are cool, highly oxygenated, fast-moving water over a mature, algae-covered rockscape. A turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is the genus standard; additional powerheads or a wavemaker directed over the rockwork are strongly advised. Temperature should stay in the cool range appropriate for the genus (roughly 61–75 °F) — this is not a warmwater tropical fish, and sustained temperatures above 75–77 °F depress oxygen levels and stress the fish.

The tank must be mature. A newly cycled tank with bare glass has nothing for the fish to eat, and it will starve within days to weeks regardless of how much sinking food is offered if there is no established biofilm. Allow the tank to run for weeks or months before introducing hillstream loaches, encouraging algae growth on rockwork under good lighting. Keep the fish in a small group of at least three; males may show mild territorial behaviour over prime feeding spots.

Because the body is near-scaleless, medications are absorbed readily and copper or organophosphate treatments should be used at reduced doses — typically half the package instruction — or avoided entirely in favour of safer alternatives. If white-spot or other disease appears, treat with care and monitor closely.

Conservation

Beaufortia multiocellata has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is typical for small, range-restricted stream endemics from Vietnam and southern China: the genus as a whole is poorly covered in formal conservation assessments, and the individual species are often data-sparse in the scientific literature.

A Vietnamese highland stream endemic faces the pressures common to montane stream fish across Indochina: catchment deforestation, riparian clearing, sedimentation from agricultural and road-building activity, and small-scale water extraction. These pressures narrow and degrade the fast, clear, well-oxygenated torrent habitat the species requires. Whether B. multiocellata is traded in any volume is not documented; the species has no widely used common name and does not appear prominently in the aquarium trade literature. A formal assessment giving at minimum a data-deficient (DD) designation would be a reasonable first step given its limited known range.
