Taxonomy & naming
Stigmatogobius pleurostigma was originally described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1849 under the name Gobius pleurostigma, from estuarine material collected in the East Indies. The species was later moved into the genus Stigmatogobius, and that placement is confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority for valid names. The genus belongs to the family Oxudercidae — the same broad goby lineage that includes the mudskippers, the knight goby, and many of the brackish-water gobies encountered in the aquarium trade.
A 2003 morphological revision of the genus Stigmatogobius consolidated the species limits across Southeast Asia. Stigmatogobius pleurostigma is most frequently confused in the trade with its congener S. sadanundio (the knight goby), which has a more westerly Indian distribution and is more commonly available in the hobby. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) also accepts the species and the current generic placement. GBIF occurrence data supports its range across mainland Southeast Asia and the Sunda Shelf islands.
Morphology
S. pleurostigma reaches a maximum recorded size of 2.5 in standard length. The body is slender and somewhat cylindrical in cross-section, typical of small estuarine gobies adapted to navigating root tangles and crevices among mangrove substrates. The head is broad and somewhat flattened, with large eyes positioned high on the skull — an adaptation to the turbid, low-visibility waters of estuarine habitats — although field data and aquarium keepers both note that this species has relatively poor eyesight and relies substantially on close-range detection of prey.
The most important structural character of the species — and of all true gobies — is the fusion of the two pelvic fins into a single concave disc, the sucker, which the fish uses to anchor itself to hard surfaces in tidal current. This distinguishes Stigmatogobius and all oxudercid gobies from the superficially similar sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Coloration is muted: pale or greyish-tan ground colour with a variable pattern of darker blotches or markings along the lateral line region, including the spots that give the species its epithet. The FishBase trophic level of 3.3 identifies it as a secondary consumer — a micro-predator, not an algae grazer.
Habitat
Stigmatogobius pleurostigma is a coastal estuarine species. It inhabits shallow mangrove-fringe creeks, mud-substrate tidal pools and the lower reaches of tidal rivers, typically in water that is brackish rather than fully marine or fully fresh. The native range extends from Vietnam and Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and into the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java and Borneo — the coastal lowlands of the Sunda Shelf region, where tidal rivers drain through mangrove forest before reaching the sea.
The species is adapted to the fluctuating salinities of this zone, tolerating a wide range from near-fresh to moderately saline conditions, but requiring measurable salt for long-term health. Salinity of 5–25 parts per thousand is documented for the habitat. The substrate is typically fine silt and mud, with root structures, submerged debris and organic material providing the cover and crevices the species exploits for foraging and refuge. Water temperature throughout the tropical Southeast Asian range is warm year-round.
Feeding
Stigmatogobius pleurostigma is a micro-predator with a trophic level of 3.3, placing it firmly in the secondary consumer tier. In the wild it forages on small aquatic invertebrates — copepods, small crustaceans, insect larvae and other benthic micro-fauna among the mangrove root systems and tidal mud. It is not an algae grazers or detritivore. Field accounts from the Mekong Delta population confirm its predatory feeding ecology.
In the aquarium, the species is known to have relatively poor eyesight, which means it does not reliably intercept foods drifting past in the water column and benefits strongly from targeted feeding — placing food directly in front of the fish using a pipette or turkey baster. It takes small live and frozen foods well: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, copepods and similar invertebrates are all accepted. Reports of consistent flake acceptance are limited; most keepers find this species ignores dried food or takes it only erratically, and a fish kept solely on dry food tends to lose condition. For reliable long-term health, live and frozen foods should form the core of the diet.
Mating
The breeding strategy of Stigmatogobius pleurostigma follows the resident cave-spawning pattern shared by the genus and by many small brackish-water gobies. Rather than migrating to the sea to spawn (as the amphidromous gobies of the Sicydiinae do), this species completes its entire reproductive cycle in brackish or fresh water — which means that, with the right conditions, it can be bred in an aquarium.
Data from the Mekong Delta population document a long spawning season running from March through November, with males reaching reproductive condition first and females reaching first maturity at approximately 1.5 in total length. The evidence from the congener S. sadanundio — and the general pattern of the genus — indicates that a conditioned male establishes and defends a territory centred on a suitable spawning site: a cave, crevice, shell, hollow log or other enclosed surface. He courts ripe females with fin displays and, once a female is accepted, leads her into the spawning site to lay her clutch.
Breeding
The female lays adhesive eggs on the interior surface of the chosen cave or crevice — the ceiling or walls are the typical substrate, as in many small goby cave-spawners. Absolute fecundity for S. pleurostigma is documented at 3,100–5,650 eggs per spawning event (data from the Mekong Delta population, showing a positive relationship between fecundity and fish body length and weight). The species is iteroparous, capable of multiple spawning events across the season.
Once spawning is complete, the female's role ends and the male takes sole responsibility for the eggs. He guards the clutch against disturbance and fans the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain water circulation and oxygen supply until hatching. The congener S. sadanundio confirms this male-guarding pattern for the genus. Because the cycle is completed in fresh or brackish water without any marine larval phase, the species can be bred in a home aquarium; the primary requirement is appropriate brackish water rather than plain fresh water, and the provision of suitable spawning sites. Fry are small at hatching and require fine first foods such as micro-organisms or newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
In the aquarium
Keeping Stigmatogobius pleurostigma successfully depends almost entirely on getting the water right. This is a brackish-water fish and does not thrive in plain fresh water long-term; marine salt should be added to bring specific gravity to approximately 1.004–1.010 (roughly 5–15 parts per thousand), which replicates the estuarine conditions of its natural habitat. Without adequate salt, the species tends to lose condition and become susceptible to disease. All other parameters should be stable, warm and well-filtered — a species that lives on tidal mudflats is not delicate about the specifics of chemistry beyond the salinity requirement, but it does need clean, well-oxygenated water.
The aquarium itself should provide abundant cover: caves, hollow logs, coconut shells, lengths of pipe and root structure to create both retreats and potential spawning sites. Males may be territorial toward each other in confined spaces, so line-of-sight breaks help reduce aggression. The species is a small goby with poor eyesight and must be target-fed: deliver live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia directly to the fish rather than broadcasting food into open water. A covered tank is advisable, as gobies are capable jumpers. S. pleurostigma is not a fish for a generic community setup; it belongs with other brackish-water species and should not be kept in the soft, acidic water of a blackwater community or a typical South American fish tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Stigmatogobius pleurostigma as Least Concern in March 2024, reflecting a species with a broad distribution across mainland and island Southeast Asia, low vulnerability to fishing pressure, and no documented population collapse. FishBase records it as harmless to humans and confirms the LC assessment. The species' tolerance of degraded estuarine conditions, including silted and disturbed mangrove habitats, likely contributes to its resilience.
The broader threats to estuarine species across Southeast Asia are the familiar ones: mangrove conversion for aquaculture and coastal development, sedimentation from deforestation, and water quality degradation from agricultural and urban runoff — pressures that affect the entire guild of small coastal gobies. While S. pleurostigma itself is currently assessed as secure, its habitat is among the most heavily pressured in the region. The species appears in the aquarium trade as an occasional import rather than a frequently kept species; most aquarium specimens are wild-collected, and there is currently no established captive breeding programme for it at scale.
