Smilosicyopus fehlmanni is a small, rheophilic true goby of the subfamily Sicydiinae, described by Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1936. Like all Sicydiinae, it belongs to the family Oxudercidae — the true gobies — whose pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that is the defining character separating true gobies from the sleepers and gudgeons. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine family; freshwater Sicydiinae such as Smilosicyopus are the exception, colonising the clear, fast-flowing streams of Indo-Pacific islands through an amphidromous lifecycle that ties every generation back to the sea. This species is effectively wild-collected and cannot be bred in a home aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Smilosicyopus fehlmanni was described by Herre in 1936, with the original combination placing it in a genus that the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid fish names — now recognises as Smilosicyopus. The family assignment is Oxudercidae, the true gobies, within the subfamily Sicydiinae, the cling-gobies or cascade gobies. The Sicydiinae are a specialised clade of fast-stream gobies distributed across Indo-Pacific islands from Madagascar and the Mascarenes through the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Wallacea, New Guinea and the Pacific island groups, with some extension to Japan. They share the fused pelvic-fin sucker disc of all true gobies and additionally use it to cling to rocks in high-velocity current — and, in the case of amphidromous species, to scale waterfalls on their upstream migration from the sea.

The genus Smilosicyopus sits among the smaller Sicydiinae, related to genera such as Sicyopus and Lentipes. Species records in this part of the Sicydiinae remain sparse in the literature, and taxonomic revisions of the broader Sicydiinae complex have clarified some older combinations. The epithet fehlmanni commemorates a person of that name, following the common ichthyological practice of honouring a collector, patron, or colleague.

Morphology

As a Sicydiinae goby, Smilosicyopus fehlmanni is a small, streamlined fish — members of the subfamily typically fall between 2 and 2 in standard length. The body is cylindrical and muscular, adapted for life in fast-flowing current over rock. The head is slightly depressed and the eyes are dorsally placed, giving good upstream visibility. Two dorsal fins are present, the first short and spinous, the second soft-rayed and longer — the typical goby bauplan.

The key structural character is the pelvic-fin sucker disc formed by the fusion of the left and right pelvic fins into a single cup-like adhesive organ on the ventral surface. This disc allows the fish to anchor itself to rocky substrates in strong current and, crucially, to climb vertical or near-vertical rock faces and waterfalls during post-larval migration. Colouration in Sicydiinae is often sexually dimorphic, with breeding males showing vivid neon or iridescent patterning; specific colour data for S. fehlmanni are not available in the current literature accessible to this account, but the broader genus pattern suggests bright lateral colouration in males.

Habitat

Smilosicyopus fehlmanni inhabits clear, fast-flowing freshwater streams in the Indo-Pacific, the habitat typical of the Sicydiinae. These are highly oxygenated, rheophilic environments: shallow riffles and runs over bedrock, cobble or boulder substrate, often in upland or foothill zones with strong seasonal discharge. Water clarity is high and current velocity is substantial — conditions entirely unlike the still, often tannin-stained blackwater of many other aquarium subjects.

Temperatures in Indo-Pacific stream habitats at low-to-moderate altitude range roughly from 72–82 °F, varying by season and elevation. The streams are essentially fresh — these are not brackish fish at any life stage after post-larval settlement, though the leptocephalus-equivalent post-larvae recruit from the sea and must pass through the estuarine zone during migration. The benthic microhabitat is dominated by biofilm-coated rock surfaces over which Sicydiinae graze.

Feeding

Sicydiinae gobies in the Sicyopus–Lentipes lineage lean toward carnivory on small benthic invertebrates — chironomid larvae, small aquatic insects and micro-crustaceans scraped or picked from the substrate — rather than the aufwuchs-grazing that dominates in Stiphodon and Sicyopterus. Smilosicyopus, positioned within this part of the subfamily, is understood to be a benthic invertebrate feeder rather than a pure algae grazer, though detailed dietary studies specific to S. fehlmanni are not available.

In the aquarium the implication is that this species will not thrive on dry flake or algae wafers alone. It requires small live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, daphnia, copepods, brine shrimp nauplii — offered on or near the substrate in a tank with sufficient current to simulate its natural feeding environment.

Mating

As an amphidromous Sicydiinae, Smilosicyopus fehlmanni breeds in the fast-running freshwater stream habitat it occupies as an adult. Males establish territories among boulders and rock cavities and display to females with intensified colour and fin-spreading behaviour. Courtship in Sicydiinae follows the standard goby pattern: the male entices a ripe female to a sheltered spawning site — a rock crevice, the underside of a stone or a small cave — where spawning takes place.

The sexes differ in colour at maturity, with males typically showing the brighter, more iridescent patterning characteristic of the subfamily. Females are usually more cryptically coloured. Because these fish are almost exclusively wild-collected, direct observation of courtship in S. fehlmanni is not documented from captive settings.

Breeding

Smilosicyopus fehlmanni is amphidromous: the adults spawn in fresh water, the male guards the adhesive eggs on the rock or cave surface until they hatch, but the tiny hatchlings are swept downstream by the current and carried out to sea. The larvae develop as marine plankton in coastal or offshore waters for a period of weeks before metamorphosing into post-larvae that recruit back to estuaries and river mouths. The post-larvae then migrate upstream, using the pelvic sucker disc to ascend waterfalls and boulder cascades, to reach the freshwater stream habitat where they will spend their adult lives.

This lifecycle means that Smilosicyopus fehlmanni cannot be bred in a home aquarium: the marine larval phase is an obligate stage that cannot be replicated, and attempting to rear the hatchlings in fresh water will fail. The aquarium hobby relies entirely on wild-collected specimens, and hobbyists should be aware that every individual in trade was taken from the wild as a post-larval recruit or juvenile.

In the aquarium

Smilosicyopus fehlmanni is a specialist fish whose needs differ sharply from most community aquarium subjects. It requires a high-flow, highly oxygenated aquarium with a rocky substrate — smooth boulders, cobbles and slate — to simulate the fast-stream environment. A powerhead or strong canister filter directed across rocks, a mature biofilm layer on the rock surfaces and excellent water quality (low nitrate, high dissolved oxygen) are non-negotiable.

The tank must be securely covered: Sicydiinae are capable jumpers and will exit an open aquarium. Males are territorial and should not be crowded; provide multiple sight-line breaks through rock structure. The fish should be fed on small live or frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, cyclops, daphnia — rather than dry foods. Because all specimens are wild-collected, they may be delicate on first arrival and should be acclimated slowly to aquarium conditions. This is not a beginner's fish; it belongs with experienced keepers of rheophilic stream species. Breeding in captivity is not achievable.

Conservation

Smilosicyopus fehlmanni has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated here. Many small-range endemic stream gobies of the Indo-Pacific, particularly those in the Sicydiinae, are inherently vulnerable: they depend on clear, unpolluted, well-oxygenated headwater streams, and their amphidromous lifecycle links stream quality to coastal marine nursery habitat in a two-phase dependency. Watershed degradation — deforestation, agriculture, dam construction and water abstraction — can sever this lifecycle by impeding upstream migration or degrading water quality below the threshold these rheophilic species tolerate.

Because S. fehlmanni cannot be captive-bred, the aquarium trade draws entirely from wild post-larval or juvenile recruitment. While individual Sicydiinae recruitment can be high in healthy streams, sustained collection pressure on depleted populations risks local extirpation. Hobbyists interested in this species should seek suppliers who collect from areas with demonstrated healthy populations and should not expect to replace specimens through captive breeding.
