Taxonomy & naming
Stiphodon atropurpureus was first described by Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1927; the original combination placed it in the genus Stiphodon, where the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — keeps it today. Stiphodon belongs to the subfamily Sicydiinae within the family Oxudercidae, the inland and brackish-water gobies, and shares that subfamily with the closely related genera Sicyopterus, Sicyopus and Lentipes — all amphidromous algae-grazers of tropical Indo-Pacific streams. The species epithet atropurpureus is Latin for 'dark purple', referring to the intense coloration of breeding males.
As a true goby, Stiphodon atropurpureus carries the defining synapomorphy of the goby lineage: the pelvic fins are fused together into a cup-shaped sucker disc on the underside of the body. This disc allows the fish to anchor itself against rock in fast current, and is absent in the sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) and gudgeons with which true gobies are sometimes confused. The wider context is worth stating plainly: the gobies are overwhelmingly a marine group; freshwater species such as Stiphodon are the exception, and even these maintain a marine larval stage.
Morphology
Stiphodon atropurpureus is a small, slender goby reaching approximately 1.5–2 in standard length. The body is cylindrical and slightly compressed, built for life in high-current stream habitat; the fused pelvic sucker disc is prominent on the ventral surface and clearly visible in live fish. The head is broad and somewhat flattened, with eyes positioned high on the skull — a common feature in stream-dwelling gobies that spend much time pressed to rock.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Breeding males display the intense dark blue to blue-violet body coloration that defines the species, often with iridescent highlights and contrasting fin markings; the coloration intensifies during courtship and dominance interactions. Females and subordinate males are considerably plainer, showing a more muted brownish or pale body with dark lateral markings, a pattern typical of the genus Stiphodon. This striking dimorphism makes sexed pairs easy to identify in dealer tanks.
Habitat
Stiphodon atropurpureus inhabits fast-flowing, clear, highly oxygenated freshwater streams in the Philippines and Indonesia, typically over bedrock and boulder substrates in the lower to mid reaches of coastal river systems. These streams are characterised by strong, turbulent flow, high dissolved oxygen, and abundant rock surfaces colonised by biofilm, diatoms and filamentous algae — the fish's primary food source. Water is typically cool to warm depending on altitude and latitude, with temperatures broadly in the range of 64–79 °F.
The species is rheophilic in the fullest sense: it clings to exposed rock faces in fast current using its sucker disc, and in this posture grazes the algal film that would be inaccessible or unproductive in calmer water. It does not inhabit still ponds, blackwater lowlands or estuarine habitats. Aquifer chemistry data for these streams is sparse in the published record, but the waters are generally well-buffered, moderately hard, and near neutral to slightly alkaline — very different from the soft, acidic tropical community tank that many hobbyists might assume.
Feeding
Stiphodon atropurpureus is a strict aufwuchs grazer and algae rasper. In the wild it feeds almost exclusively by scraping biofilm, diatoms and fine filamentous algae from the surfaces of smooth, current-washed rocks using a specialised, comb-like oral dentition. This is not opportunistic grazing — it is the feeding mode around which the fish's entire morphology is organised.
In the aquarium, this specialisation is the single greatest cause of keeper failure. A fish placed in a newly set-up, bare, or recently cleaned tank finds essentially nothing to eat and will starve within days or weeks despite appearing active. The tank must be mature, with glass, rock and substrate surfaces already colonised by a visible film of green and brown algae, before Stiphodon is introduced. Supplementary foods — thin sheets of blanched spinach or courgette, spirulina wafers or algae-based sinking pellets — help maintain condition, as can small frozen foods such as brine shrimp, but the biofilm-covered rockscape is non-negotiable. This is not a beginner fish and it is not a flake-eater.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in Stiphodon atropurpureus follows the pattern documented across the amphidromous Sicydiinae. Males are territorial and defend patches of suitable rock substrate, intensifying their brilliant blue-violet coloration as a dominance and courtship signal. Rival males court and displace one another with frontal displays and lateral shows, and a dominant male in peak colour is a conspicuous fish even in fast water.
Courting males lead ripe females to a cave or crevice beneath a stone or overhanging rock where the pair spawns. The male's intense coloration and territorial behaviour are most pronounced during the breeding season, which in wild populations is tied to lunar cycles and seasonal flow regimes that coordinate larval export to the sea — a timing cue difficult or impossible to replicate in the home aquarium.
Breeding
Stiphodon atropurpureus is amphidromous: adults breed entirely in fresh water, the male guards a clutch of adhesive eggs laid on the ceiling or wall of a rocky cave, and hatching occurs in the stream. However, the larvae that emerge are not miniature juveniles — they are tiny, poorly developed pelagic larvae that must be swept downstream by the current, reach the estuary, and enter the sea, where they develop for several weeks as marine plankton before metamorphosing into post-larvae (elvers). These post-larvae then actively seek freshwater stream mouths and ascend rivers, in some cases climbing near-vertical waterfall faces using the pelvic sucker disc in a remarkable post-larval recruitment behaviour documented across the Sicydiinae.
The consequence for aquarium-keeping is direct and unambiguous: Stiphodon atropurpureus cannot be bred in the home aquarium. The marine larval stage is an obligate part of the life cycle, and no freshwater aquarium can substitute for it. All fish available in the trade are wild-collected. This is an important consideration for anyone buying the species — demand is met entirely from wild populations, and the fish's care requirements and wild-caught status together make it unsuitable for casual purchase.
In wild populations, spawning typically coincides with periods of high flow that help carry larvae seaward. The male guards the eggs in the nest cave until hatching but has no further involvement with the larvae once they drift.
In the aquarium
Stiphodon atropurpureus is an advanced-level species that rewards keepers who can meet its specific needs, but it is emphatically not a community tank beginner fish. The single most important requirement is a mature aquarium with substantial algal growth on every hard surface: glass, rocks, driftwood and substrate must all be carrying a visible biofilm before the fish is introduced. A powerhead or circulation pump generating brisk, turbulent flow across rock surfaces not only maintains oxygenation but accelerates biofilm growth and replicates the rheophilic stream environment the fish requires.
Tank size should be at least 23.5–31.5 in in length to accommodate flow and territories. The substrate should be smooth boulders and flat stones, not gravel or sand alone. The tank must be covered: like most gobies, Stiphodon is an accomplished jumper and an open lid is a death sentence. Male competition is real — multiple males will spar unless there are sufficient sight-breaks and territory anchors among the rocks. Females can be kept in groups.
Water temperature should stay in the 64–79 °F range, with the cooler end of this range (68–73 °F) often producing the best coloration and activity in specimens from higher-altitude streams. Dissolved oxygen must be high — this is not negotiable. The fish will decline in warm, slow, oxygen-poor water. All fish in trade are wild-collected and consequently amphidromous; prospective buyers should understand this before purchase, as it means no captive-bred stock is available and the fish's aquarium life is its only life away from wild streams.
Conservation
Stiphodon atropurpureus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a broad range across stream systems in the Philippines and Indonesia without evidence of a significant range-wide decline.
The species does face pressures typical of small-stream fish across the Philippines and Indonesia: deforestation of riparian zones, sedimentation from agriculture and road construction, water extraction, and in some localities small-scale exploitation for the aquarium trade. Because all traded fish are wild-collected, collection pressure adds to these habitat-based stressors, though it has not been found to threaten the species at a global level. The amphidromous life cycle connects populations across river systems via the marine larval phase, which may buffer against local declines, though degradation of estuarine habitats can still affect recruitment into upstream adult populations far inland.
