Stigmatogobius sadanundio, the knight goby, is a true goby — family Oxudercidae — whose pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that separates real gobies from the sleepers and gudgeons. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine group, and the knight goby reflects that heritage: it is a brackish estuarine fish of South and South-East Asian tidal rivers and creek systems, one that requires measurable salinity for long-term health. Small, strikingly patterned with rows of dark spots on a pale body, and capable of being bred in the aquarium if brackish conditions are provided, it is one of the more rewarding and underappreciated species in the hobby — but it will fade and fail in a plain freshwater tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Stigmatogobius sadanundio was first described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 from material collected in the Bengal Bay region of what is now Bangladesh and north-eastern India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — places it in the genus Stigmatogobius, family Oxudercidae. The Gobioidei have been reshuffled repeatedly by molecular phylogenies, and older literature may place this species in synonymous or paraphyletic genera including Gobius and Vaimosa; the current combination Stigmatogobius sadanundio should be used.

This is a true goby in the strict sense: the pelvic fins are fused into a cup-like sucker disc, the defining character of the gobioid lineage and the feature that most readily separates true gobies from the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain free. Gobies are numerically one of the largest fish families on Earth, and they are overwhelmingly marine; estuarine and freshwater species like the knight goby are the exceptions, carrying their tidal-water physiology into rivers and creeks. The common name "knight goby" is the most widely used English name; "decorated goby" also appears in older hobbyist literature.

Morphology

The knight goby is a compact, moderately elongated fish reaching about 3 in standard length in adults. The body is pale — silvery-white to cream — overlaid with a distinctive pattern of dark spots and blotches arranged in rough rows along the flanks; the dorsal fins carry additional spotting and, in breeding males, can show intensified black and white contrast. The sucker disc formed by the fused pelvic fins is plainly visible on the ventral surface and is the most reliable character for confirming that this is a true goby rather than a sleeper.

Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle in juveniles. As males mature they develop darker, more contrasting coloration and somewhat larger finnage; females remain paler and smaller-bodied, particularly around the abdomen when gravid. The two first dorsal-fin spines of breeding males can appear particularly elongated and conspicuous during display.

Habitat

The knight goby inhabits the estuarine and tidal sections of rivers and creeks across the Indo-West Pacific, from the Bengal Bay region through much of South and South-East Asia. Its core habitat is brackish water: tidal flats, mangrove-edge channels, lower river reaches where freshwater meets the sea, and the associated muddy or sandy substrates. It is regularly encountered in water with measurable salinity and can also push into freshwater reaches, but estuarine or lightly brackish conditions are its natural home.

Temperatures in these lowland tidal habitats run warm year-round — approximately 75–82 °F — and pH spans a broad range from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline (around 6.5–8.0), reflecting the mixing of riverine and marine water. The substrate is typically soft: mud, silt, and fine sand, with rock, roots and debris providing cover. This is emphatically not soft, acidic blackwater; the chemistry is tidal and mineral-rich.

Feeding

Stigmatogobius sadanundio is a micro-predator. In the wild it hunts small aquatic invertebrates — tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and similar benthic prey — by ambushing or stalking them along the bottom in the tidal margins it frequents. It does not graze algae and is not a detritivore.

In the aquarium, live and frozen foods are essential for condition and long-term health: bloodworm, brine shrimp (live or frozen), daphnia, cyclops and chopped small crustaceans are all accepted. Most individuals refuse dry flake entirely or take it poorly, and a diet of flake alone will cause the fish to lose colour and condition steadily. Feeding live or frozen food two to three times daily, sized to the small but capable mouth, is the standard keeper approach.

Mating

The knight goby is a resident brackish-water cave spawner with genuine male parental care. Unlike the amphidromous gobies of mountain streams — whose larvae must be swept to sea to develop — Stigmatogobius sadanundio completes its entire reproductive cycle within estuarine and tidal-fresh water, which is the reason it can be bred in captivity when provided with appropriate brackish conditions.

In the aquarium, a conditioned male establishes and defends a cave, crevice, length of pipe, or similar sheltered site. Courtship involves the male intensifying his spot pattern and patrolling near the chosen site, leading a ripe female toward the spawning cave. Females in breeding condition show a rounded abdomen. Territory disputes between males are settled by fin-spreading and lateral displays; serious injury is uncommon, though males may be aggressive toward each other in close quarters.

Breeding

When a pair is ready to spawn, the female enters the cave and lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of the shelter. After spawning she is driven out by the male, who then guards the clutch alone, fanning the eggs with his pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygenation and removing any unfertilised eggs. Incubation time depends on temperature but typically spans several days under warm brackish conditions.

Breeding has been documented in aquaria provided with a specific gravity of roughly 1.005–1.010 (light brackish). Fry are small on hatching and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. The male's attentive guarding means clutch survival can be good when tank mates are excluded. For hobbyists, the key is brackish water: spawning attempts in plain freshwater are rarely successful even if the adult fish appear to tolerate it short-term.

In the aquarium

The knight goby rewards keepers who meet its brackish requirement. A tank of 15–20 US gal suits a pair or a small group; the water should be maintained at a specific gravity of roughly 1.005–1.010 (achieved with marine salt mix), temperature 75–82 °F, and pH around 7.0–8.0. Caves, lengths of PVC pipe, ceramic tubes and rock piles are essential: males are territorial and need line-of-sight breaks. A tightly fitting lid is important — like most gobies, the knight goby is a capable jumper.

The fish mixes reasonably well with other brackish species of similar size — figure-eight puffer tankmates are inadvisable given the puffer's fin-nipping tendency, but other mollies, glassfish (Parambassis) and similar brackish community fish can work. Do NOT keep it in plain freshwater; the brackish requirement is non-negotiable for long-term health and the species will typically decline within months in a wholly freshwater setup. Lifespan in captivity is approximately 4–6 years when water quality and diet are maintained. The species is generally available through specialist brackish-fish traders and is sporadically bred by hobbyists, reducing reliance on wild-caught stock.

Conservation

Stigmatogobius sadanundio has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; we record it here as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than assign a speculative status. It is a widespread estuarine species distributed across much of South and South-East Asia, which in principle suggests greater resilience than narrow stream endemics, but estuarine habitats across its range face chronic pressure from coastal development, mangrove clearance, pollution, and altered hydrology.

The hobby trade draws on wild-collected individuals from South and South-East Asian collection points, as the species is not yet mass-produced by fish farms in the way that some brackish species are. Responsible hobbyists who succeed in breeding the knight goby in captivity contribute to reducing that collection pressure, and captive-bred stock is worth seeking where available. The conservation outlook for the species is unclear in the absence of formal assessment, but habitat degradation in its estuarine heartland remains the principal concern.
