Taxonomy & naming
Macropodus phongnhaensis was described in 2005 by Ngô Sĩ Vân, Nguyen Van Hao, and Nguyen Huu Duc, appearing in the Vietnamese freshwater fish literature of that year. The species name phongnhaensis refers to the Phong Nha area of Quảng Bình Province in central Vietnam, the type locality from which specimens were collected. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Macropodus phongnhaensis Ngô, Nguyen & Nguyen, 2005.
The genus Macropodus (Hamilton, 1822) belongs to the family Osphronemidae, subfamily Macropodusinae, and encompasses the paradisefishes of South and East Asia — a group of small, often colourful anabantoids found from India and southern China south through Indochina. M. phongnhaensis is one of several Vietnamese endemics within the genus and was placed in Macropodus on the basis of morphological characters consistent with the group; molecular placement has not been widely published in the accessible English-language literature. The species' relationship to its congeners — including the well-known M. opercularis (Linnaeus, 1758) and the more recently described central Vietnamese species M. erythropterus — has not been exhaustively resolved.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in for Macropodus phongnhaensis, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. Like other paradisefishes it is a laterally compressed, moderately elongated fish with the flowing, filamentous extensions to the caudal and unpaired fins that are a hallmark of Macropodus males.
Detailed published descriptions of the species' colouration, meristics, and soft-tissue characters are sparse in the accessible English-language literature. By generic affinity, the body plan is expected to conform to the Macropodus template: a relatively pointed snout, large eyes, an upturned mouth adapted to surface feeding and air-breathing, and prominent dorsal, anal, and caudal fins with elongated ray tips in mature males. Field and laboratory colour notes specific to M. phongnhaensis have not been widely reported outside the original Vietnamese description.
Habitat
Macropodus phongnhaensis is a Vietnam endemic, its known range centred on the Phong Nha region of Quảng Bình Province in central Vietnam — a landscape dominated by limestone karst, cave systems, and the Son River drainage. The Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng area supports a number of range-restricted freshwater species associated with the karst geology.
As an obligate air-breather possessing a labyrinth organ, M. phongnhaensis is adapted to still or slow-moving freshwater habitats where surface access is reliable and dissolved oxygen may be limited — conditions typical for the shallow pools, rice-field margins, ditches, and sluggish stream reaches that paradisefishes exploit across Indochina. Water conditions in karst drainages of central Vietnam include moderately warm tropical temperatures and chemistry influenced by the carbonate substrate, though precise field measurements for the collection sites of M. phongnhaensis are not widely published. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic, tropical freshwater fish.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding study has been published for Macropodus phongnhaensis in the accessible literature. By genus and family affinity, paradisefishes are generalised carnivore-omnivores, foraging opportunistically on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and surface-drift insects — as well as occasional plant matter and algal films.
The upturned mouth and surface-oriented posture seen across Macropodus species suit ambush and surface-strike predation on insects and invertebrates falling onto or swimming near the water's surface, and the same strategy is expected in M. phongnhaensis. In the aquarium, congeners accept a broad range of small live, frozen, and prepared foods: Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, small insects, and quality micro-pellets or flake all suit the dietary profile of the genus.
Mating
Macropodus phongnhaensis belongs to a genus that is uniformly characterised by bubble-nest spawning, and this reproductive mode is expected for the species. In congeners such as M. opercularis, the male constructs a raft of mucus-bound bubbles at the water surface — sometimes incorporating fragments of plant material — in a sheltered area and defends it as a territory. Courtship involves the male displaying his finnage and colouration to the female, with intensified pigmentation and spread fins forming the primary signal.
The male's investment is in territory and nest maintenance: he courts females by circling and displaying, and will drive rival males and non-receptive females away from the nest site. Once a receptive female is drawn in, spawning occurs beneath or near the bubble nest, with the pair embracing in the typical anabantoid nuptial clasp as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously.
Breeding
As in other Macropodus, breeding in M. phongnhaensis is expected to proceed as follows: the male collects fertilised eggs in his mouth and blows them up into the bubble nest, where they are held in the mucus raft at the surface. He then guards the nest closely, retrieving any eggs or early larvae that sink and topping up the bubble mass as needed. Eggs hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, and the larvae remain in and around the nest, attending only to yolk-sac absorption, for several more days before they become free-swimming.
Once the fry are free-swimming the male's guarding role diminishes, and the adults should be removed to prevent predation on the young. The fry are initially very small and require fine first foods — infusoria, commercially prepared fry foods, or rotifers — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. No captive breeding records for M. phongnhaensis specifically have been published in the accessible English-language hobby literature.
In the aquarium
Macropodus phongnhaensis is essentially absent from the international ornamental fish trade as of the time of writing, and captive husbandry notes specific to the species do not appear in the English-language hobby literature. Guidance for the species must therefore be extrapolated from the requirements of close congeners.
Paradisefishes of the genus Macropodus are generally hardy and adaptable by anabantoid standards, tolerating a wide range of temperatures and water chemistries that would stress more sensitive labyrinth fish — a robustness consistent with living in seasonally variable Indochinese lowland habitats. A covered aquarium is important to prevent the fish from gulping cold air, which can damage the labyrinth organ. Males of Macropodus species can be territorial and aggressive with one another and may harass females outside of breeding condition; keeping a single male with one or more females, or providing a well-planted tank with adequate visual breaks, is the standard approach. Surface access must be unobstructed at all times.
Conservation
Macropodus phongnhaensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its global conservation status is listed as Not Evaluated. Neither FishBase nor iNaturalist records any formal assessment for the species, and there are no known observations of it in citizen-science databases such as iNaturalist as of the time of writing.
The species' apparent restriction to a limited area of central Vietnam — and specifically to the Phong Nha karst landscape, which is geologically distinctive and supports a number of range-restricted endemics — raises habitat-specificity concerns that a formal assessment might need to address. Land-use change, drainage modification, and collection pressure in biodiversity-rich but data-poor drainages of Indochina have affected numerous freshwater endemics in the region. Until a proper survey is conducted and an IUCN assessment completed, the conservation needs of M. phongnhaensis remain unquantified.
