Taxonomy & naming
Macropodus spechti was described by Wilhelm Schreitmüller in 1936 based on specimens received by German aquarists, with the original description appearing in Das Aquarium. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Macropodus spechti Schreitmüller, 1936; authority is not parenthetical because the species has remained in Macropodus since its original description. The genus Macropodus belongs to the family Osphronemidae — the true gouramis and paradise fishes — within the suborder Anabantoidei.
A significant taxonomic revision of Vietnamese Macropodus was provided by Freyhof and Herder in 2002, who reassessed the paradise fishes occurring in Vietnam and clarified the distributional limits of M. spechti relative to the widespread M. opercularis and M. erythropterus. M. spechti is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of coloration characters: the dark bars on the flanks are faint to absent (not bold), the posterior soft rays of the dorsal and caudal fins carry blue pigment, and the pelvic fins show red on the anterior soft ray — but crucially the unpaired fins lack the red ground colour present in M. erythropterus, giving the fish a darker, less vivid overall impression that accounts for the name "Black Paradise Fish" in the hobby.
Morphology
Macropodus spechti is a moderately elongated anabantoid reaching around 3 in standard length, with FishBase recording a maximum of 2.5 in SL for measured specimens; the Seriously Fish profile gives 3 in SL as the typical adult range. The body is laterally compressed, the head pointed, and the caudal fin distinctly forked with the upper and lower rays drawn out into filaments tipped white to black. As in all Macropodus, the dorsal and anal fins are elongated posteriorly with pointed soft-ray extensions, more pronounced in dominant males.
The base coloration is pale brown to dark grey, with four to twelve faint, inconspicuous dark vertical bars on the flanks — bars that may be nearly invisible in settled fish but intensify with stress or during display. The opercular spot, conspicuous in M. opercularis, is pale or absent in this species. Scales carry darker posterior margins, giving the flanks a lightly crosshatched texture. The diagnostic colour features are the blue pigment on the posterior membranes of the dorsal and caudal fins, the red-orange tinge on the anterior soft pelvic-fin ray, and the absence of red ground colour in the unpaired fins — the character that most reliably separates it from the red-finned M. erythropterus in the field and in shop tanks.
Sexual dimorphism follows the family pattern: males are noticeably larger and develop more pronounced extensions of the soft rays in the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins; females are smaller and rounder-bodied, with shorter, more rounded fins.
Habitat
Macropodus spechti is endemic to a narrow corridor of central Vietnam, known from two river systems: the Thu Bồn River basin in Quảng Nam province and the Hương (Perfume) River basin in Thừa Thiên-Huế province. Both drainages flow east to the South China Sea across a coastal lowland backed by the Trường Sơn (Annamite) foothills — a landscape shaped by intensive rice agriculture, seasonal flooding, and a mosaic of natural and anthropogenic wetlands.
The species occupies a wide range of still and slow-moving habitats within this range: flooded rice paddies, irrigation ditches, seasonal pools, marshes, and the densely vegetated backwaters and marginal shallows of larger rivers, as well as hill-stream sections with more current and structured banks. As a labyrinth fish, it is physiologically equipped to exploit oxygen-poor standing water that would exclude most other fish — the suprabranchial organ allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly, and it surfaces regularly to do so. Water conditions recorded across its range are correspondingly permissive: pH 6.0–8.0, temperatures 68–86 °F, hardness 90–357 ppm (FishBase lists 0–20 dH and 68–79 °F for typical habitat).
Feeding
In the wild, Macropodus spechti is primarily insectivorous, taking mosquito larvae, aquatic insect larvae, and small surface invertebrates from the margins of its paddy and ditch habitats. The species' natural hunting posture is at or near the surface, consistent with labyrinth-fish ecology and with the abundance of surface prey (emerging midges, fallen terrestrial insects) in flooded agricultural landscapes.
In the aquarium it is an accommodating omnivore. Live and frozen foods — Daphnia, brine shrimp, white worms, grindal worms, and bloodworm — are accepted eagerly and improve conditioning and colour. Quality dried foods including small pellets and flake form a sound dietary base, though a live-food component is beneficial for sustained breeding condition. The species' appetite for mosquito larvae is a practical advantage in summertime outdoor tub or pond keeping, where it doubles as a natural mosquito control agent.
Mating
Macropodus spechti is a bubble-nester. The male builds a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface, typically anchored among floating vegetation, overhanging leaves, or a clump of surface plant cover. Nest-building intensifies when water temperature is raised slightly and water level lowered — cues that apparently mimic the drying-season conditions under which the species spawns in nature.
Once the nest is established, the male courts the female with lateral displays, fin-spreading, and colour intensification. Unlike some more aggressive Macropodus, M. spechti is reported to be tolerant of the female during this phase, allowing her to move through the tank without persistent harassment. When she is receptive, the pair position beneath the bubble nest and enter the osphronemid nuptial embrace: the male curves his body around the female, they release eggs and milt simultaneously, and the fertilised eggs — buoyant due to an oil globule — float up into the bubble nest. The pair may spawn repeatedly over the course of hours, producing several hundred eggs in total.
Breeding
Breeding Macropodus spechti follows the standard bubble-nester protocol for the genus, and the species is not difficult to spawn in captivity. A conditioning period on live and frozen foods brings both sexes into optimal condition. The spawning tank should have a tight-fitting cover to keep the air above the water warm — essential for the labyrinth organ development of fry — a shallow water level (around 6 in is often used) to make nest maintenance easier for the male, and floating plant cover such as water lettuce or spawning moss to anchor the bubble nest.
After spawning, the female should be removed, as the male becomes defensive of the nest and may injure her. He continues to tend the nest, retrieving any eggs or fry that fall and repairing the bubble structure. At typical breeding temperatures of 75–82 °F, eggs hatch within two to three days and the fry become free-swimming a few days after that. At this point the male is usually removed as well. The fry require very small first foods — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry food — for the first week or so before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms. Water changes must be gentle to avoid disturbing the surface film; a thin cover of floating plants helps maintain surface stability during early fry development.
In the aquarium
Macropodus spechti is hardy and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of water conditions that would challenge many tropical fish — a legacy of its paddy and ditch habitat. It accepts temperatures from 68–86 °F and pH from 6.0 to 8.0, making it suitable for unheated aquaria in temperate climates during warmer months, an unusual quality among ornamental anabantoids. The fish can survive in low-oxygen conditions by breathing atmospheric air, but good surface access and a tight lid are nonetheless essential; it must be able to reach the air surface freely, and cold draughts over the tank can damage the labyrinth organ in juveniles.
Outside of breeding, the species is peaceful — more so than the tempestuous M. opercularis — and can be kept with similarly sized, robust tankmates in a community setting. During breeding the male becomes territorial around the nest, so adequate space and line-of-sight breaks with décor are advisable. A minimum footprint of around 15–20 US gal suits a pair or small group. Planted tanks with floating cover and some structure suit the fish's natural habitat and provide security. Males held together may spar and display, which intensifies colour; a single male can be kept alone or with females. The species is occasionally available from specialist anabantoid breeders and hobbyist groups, though it is not as widely distributed in the trade as M. opercularis.
Conservation
Macropodus spechti is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 28 July 2010), meaning that insufficient information exists to make a direct or indirect assessment of its risk of extinction based on its distribution and population status. The DD listing does not imply that the species is necessarily threatened, but it does reflect a genuine gap in survey effort across its central Vietnamese range.
The species is an endemic of a geographically restricted coastal corridor of Vietnam, a region that has experienced significant habitat modification through agricultural intensification, drainage of wetlands, and urbanisation. Rice-paddy habitats, while modified, can support robust Macropodus populations — the fish is physiologically pre-adapted to these environments — but conversion of paddy to other land uses, pesticide application, and channelisation of irrigation networks are potential pressures. A clearer picture of the species' abundance and precise distributional limits awaits targeted field survey. In the aquarium hobby it is bred by specialist enthusiasts, and captive-bred stock circulates in anabantoid hobbyist networks, providing a buffer against any future collecting pressure on wild populations.
